Does "Future Consideration" have any real meaning?

Future considerations would imply there are also past considerations. Why can't there be reconciliatory trades?

That sometimes happens.

Future Considerations is actually the most travelled player in NHL history.

My favourite trade involving future considerations was the Buffalo and Washington trade, and then the Washington and Buffalo trade. John Tucker went to Washington in the first trade. And then John Tucker went from Washington to Buffalo that summer for future considerations. Basically he was traded for himself.

it always feels like you aren't allowed to just give a player away, so it's just something to write in as return

It’s supposed to mean a player and/or picks will be sent at a later date to complete the trade. There are various examples of this happening.
