Does anyone want to talk about the Capitals

I mean they changed almost half the roster from last season.
If you count just before the season
42% roster overhaul
Throw in Eller and its 47% different from last season.

That's also not factoring in the kids and the progression of Protas, McMichael and even Strome although he had a good year last year as well. You really cant compare this team to last years team.
If Ovi doesn't get hurt they had the potential for 2 50 goal scorers. Just a lot of things going right for the team at the moment and as someone said earlier they had one of the toughest schedules to start the season and top 5 easiest the rest of the way.

Sid will always have the last call on that. He will not want to sit through a rebuild at the age of 40.
To summarize your take based on the last few posts:

Crosby's either going to retire or ask for a trade after his current contract. But he's also not going anywhere. But he's also always going to have last call on that.

He's riding out the contract and goes from there. Only way he's traded is if he wants out before that.

He's loyal to the core so he will ride it out.

They sure have been exciting to watch this year. If I were a fan of some other team right now, I am pretty sure I would make the Caps the other team whose games I try to regularly watch.

This is all difficult even for most Caps fans to come to grips with, but we're past the first quarter of a season now and overwhelming offense seems to keep happening over and over. It's been getting less and less difficult to believe in as the season has progressed. Luck is becoming an increasingly less satisfying explanation. It is getting more and more difficult to think there isn't a large element of team chemistry and good coaching. But, y'know, who knows. Fun to watch right now though.

Exciting: they have McDavid and Draisatl

Sad: they still haven't won a Cup even with McDavid and Draisatl

Hilarious: they appear to have a Stanley Cup hangover without actually winning a Stanley Cup

Those two players will certainly write some history but exactly what have they done as of yet that compares to Ovy's chase?

well mcdavids already passed ovechkin as a player even if he would retire now. ovechkin's goal chase is mostly gimmick typic freak show it doesnt mean much in valuating players..
Your dislike of Ovechkin is well known around here, so it's not a balanced view. More like an unbalanced one

Let’s talk about them in April.
You'll definitely have more time, since the Isles will be golfing

I'm not sure where they will end up at the end of the season. Currently 4 games on hand for top spot in their division. I would guess they will make the playoffs in the bottom half of the bracket or a wild card. They should come back down to earth a little.

But as a mid to bottom wild cardseed, this is a team that can wreck your first round and make life difficult. Well suited for playoff hockey.

People keep saying this - they just became the third-fastest team to 100 goals in the last 30 years. Regressing from that doesn't mean you become average it means you go from historic to just really good.

Yes shooting percentages will come down. So maybe they go from well over 4 GPG to 3 and change. That will still win you a lot of games and they've put hay in the barn now while their shooting luck is up.

I don't see which EC teams should be expected to end up being clearly better, to be honest.

They seem to be in the same tier as NJ, CAR and TOR (maybe TB as well, who has an impressive goal differential but only a decent record). The Rangers don't give me the sense that they'll be all that good this season. They may improve following the Trouba deal.

FLA has to be considered the top team in the Conference (but two long playoff runs in a row may take a toll), and there are about four others that are good. The rest are lackluster to poor.

Wonder how viable the progression of the likes of McMichael, Protas, PLD and Sandin will be, but if they have 2 strong starters, plus guys in their prime like Strome, Chychrun and Wilson to supplement the remainder of the previous core (Ovie, Wilson) then they could just about turn the corner and successfully retool. Then again, if the likes of Protas, Strome and McM have their success largely off of Ovie's shot, they may need to save some cap space in the future to get another elite scorer who could prop up their totals, but for now I'd say they're a pretty strong team.

They also have Leonard, Miroshnichenko and Cristall on the way too.
