Do you think the Rangers should re-sign Marc Staal long term?

Allen seems like he has the ability to anchor a line defensively so playing on the third pair with Boyle might not be the worst thing in the world.

They would have to watch out for the first couple of months during road games because other teams would try to put out their top line against them, especially in defensive zone starts.

The problem with letting Staal go is that he is the only good shot suppressing D we have left on the team after letting Strålman go.

Had we signed Gilbert in stead of Boyle, that wouldn't have been a problem. But now our top-4 consists of two shot generation factories in McDonagh and Boyle, Girardi who is just overall terrible at generation/suppression, and Staal as the lone good suppressor.

McD-Girardi
Allen-Gilbert
Moore-Klein

Would've been acceptable.

Without Staal we only have one average suppressor (McD), and the rest being either bad-to-terrible (Girardi, Boyle, Klein, Moore) or completely unknown (Allen).

Without Staal Hank is going to face a TON of rubber every game.

What teams could be interested in a Dman like Staal? Dallas? Anaheim? Florida? Calgary?

Edmonton, too. Eventually they will have to think about adding something other than 18-19 year olds and journeymen.

Still holding out hope Slats is working on a trade for O'Reilly with Staal involved. Otherwise I would keep him till the deadline and revisit a trade option.

With Statsny gone I doubt O'Reilly is going anywhere.

Im going to keep beating the Kadri Drum until The Rangers make a trade. Trade Brassard, Staal, possible pick, to the leafs for Kadri who has 1st C potential and would do very well under AV And Jake Gardnier. Both these players have been mentioned in trade rumors in the past year.

The Rangers need to either sign or trade Staal. The Rangers didn't re-sign Stralman. Maybe management didn't want too many long-term contracts on defense with Stralman AND Staal. Defensemen are hard to find and they are very expensive. The last thing the Rangers need is Staal beginning the season as a pending group III. The rental market sucked last season because cap space was tight. Guess what it will be very tight or tighter this season. Get closure one way or the other. Can the Rangers flip Staal for another younger and cheaper defenseman along with other assets? A D who can play in a top 4 role.

That is a terrible overpayment by the Rangers IMO. They want to add to their center depth not move some away. If the Leafs were able to agree to an extension prior to the trade, Staal alone for those two would just about do.

While I agree that normally Staal would be worth both. He only has one year left and injury issues. I harp on this trade because I really think AV would be able to turn both Kadri and Gardnier into amazing players. And if you want a Center you're going to have to give one up.

I think this is a realistic and good
trade for the team. Kadri is 23 and Gardnier is younger. Instead of the rangers doing their usual trading for a 30 year old declining player the Rangers would add more youth.

Kadri is nowhere near the player Stepan is, so if Kadri has "#1 potential", we should be more than fine with Stepan and Brassard. Besides, I deplore Kadri as a player. Trade Staal for a #1 and a quality young player and continue to replenish the system.

The Rangers got to the finals with a solid defensive core and minimal offense.

Slowly mgt is dismantling the D hoping rookies can step in and replace what the team is losing. Without Staal, I am looking at MCD, Gman and Klein as a proven core. Boyle, a st acquisition.... has some offense but how is he in front of the net? Can Moore hold up without an experienced defensive partner?

I am not advocating that Stall shouldn't be shopped due to cap issues etc.

I am saying that if the team loses him, even with some better offense, we might see new holes springing up while trying to fix other holes.

In the end risks must be taken and young assets plus a few new acquisitions are the hope to seeing a better than average team. Losing Staal and Stralman (a 2nd pairing D corp) is not without risk. Assuming both can be replaced without the team taking a step back might be more hoping than reality.

It's called life in the salary cap era.

Staal is not going to net you what you think. And what #1 Cs are available besides Thorton (pls no) And E staal getting paid Malkin money?

That's a #1 as in a 1st round pick. Staal will get you a 1st round pick and a young player/prospect.

If you wanna get really filthy the Rangers should go after Kadri, JVR, And Gardnier. Staal, Brassard, and what else?

This is more of just a fantasy idea but still doable.

Solid defender. Cannot have two one dimensional defenders making 5+ per each. Should be traded during the season while hes playing well. Max out his value.

I am just concerned about his future contract. I have a feeling the Rangers trade him at the deadline. He can't be a #3-4 defenseman going forward, especially with the money he is bound to make. It's an unfortunate situation, but the organization seems to be high on Skjei, and he will most likely make the team next year.

McD - G
Skjei - Boyle
Moore/Allen - Wrath/Klein

He will never be the #1 defenseman on this team with McDonagh around.

Head injuries, one eye, will be massively paid.

It's a massive risk to resign him. He would become almost un-tradeable because of the contract.

They would just need to get creative to fill a hole.
