Do you think goaltenders fear being the one that gives up Ovechkin's goal #895?

They will be immortalized in a bad way on YouTube from now until the Sun engulfs planet Earth in the very distant future.

Millions (or even billions) of people will see them get beaten by Ovechkin to make it #895 for The Great 8!

Do you think this causes goaltenders to feel nervous or worried?

No. You’re playing in the NHL and happened to give up a goal to the all time leading goal scorer, who’s beat many a goalies before. The flip side is that I’m sure many goalies want to make a great save on him when he’s looking for the record breaker as it becomes a story within a story of sorts

Yeah, it was McLean. Gretzky also broke the most goals in a season record and the most points in a season record against the Canucks. He feasted on our team.

It was McLean for #802 yes. And he did look very bad on that goal to be fair. For whatever reason he was ultra committed to McSorley taking the shot and when he made a nice pass to Gretzky McLean was way out of position. So he did look bad on the goal. I am sure he wishes that part didn't happen, but if it was just a normal run of the mill goal, hey, no big deal. But as a goalie they may see it differently.

By the way, wasn't Gretzky's 77th goal in 1982 against Buffalo? And I think the goalie was Don Edwards. That was the record breaker of Esposito's record. And a year where Gretzky eventually got 92. Ironic because there were two hat tricks in that game, Gretzky's and then Gilbert Perreault got one.

Back to the OP, I think there are times as an athlete you have to accept the fact you are part of history. I know Bill Buckner signed many a picture of him letting the ball go through his legs in 1986. He and Mookie Wilson ironically became friends. You have to find a way to have this benefit you and I think in the long run this is a conversation starter at the least and a side job at the best. Nothing against Glen Hanlon's career but he might be best known for allowing Gretzky's 1st NHL goal. Or allowing Ken Morrow's goal in that 1984 classic game. McLean is known for more than just goal #802 being allowed and Bill Barber had a HHOF career and isn't relegated to just being known as the last player back on Gretzky's empty netter for goal 50 in 39. But I'll bet you can make a killing on this sort of thing if you were just a no-namer. Dave Reece being the guy that allowed Sittler's 10 point game is probably the best thing that happened to him.

There is some talk to Ovechkin scoring an empty-net goal in this thread to score goal #895.

Do you think that could actually happen?

Would Ovechkin shoot the puck into an empty-net for #895?

Or would he intentionally pass on that type of goal so that #895 was obtained with an actual goaltender in net?
