They should just have a look at the numbers and agree that LTIR is the best option for the player. He's only going to get a fraction of the money owed on his real $8 million salary, and he's not going to be a high earning UFA. Take the year off, rest up and go back to Pittsburgh.

They only scenario where they involve a pick is if they're swapping draft spots.
