No, but that's already been done and I doubt Dolan will be a fan of paying Richards to not play just to sign another big contract, especially since Richards and his cap hit isn't that bad.
NOT WITH MY MONEY!

It's only $18 million! What kind of a cheapskate is he?

As long as the condition can't happen, they can.

The Rangers traded this year's 7th rounder as a conditional pick in both the Mashinter and Carcillo trades.

Say the conditional 1st in the MSL trade was in 2016. We wouldn't be allowed to trade that pick, right?

You keep one of Richards or Brassard or you dump both and go after Stasny. Maybe the rights to Brassard could return a late pick.

Keeping both is not a viable option as far as I see it.

Also if we buyout Richards his best friend (msl) could be upset and he could just sign with where ever Richards go

I don't think Richards had that big of an influence on MSL wanting to come here. Of course they're buddies, but MSL has to know that there is a significant chance Richards is bought out this summer. Just my opinion, obviously.

Maybe we trade the rights to Brassard and something else for the rights to ROR? :naughty:

Then buyout Richards.

There are reasons NOT to buy out Richards, they are all negated by the cap hell that is bound to occur with that contract a few years down the line. Compliance him. We have to.

Yeah, St. Louis asked for a trade to New York before Richards signed with the Rangers.

There's a mock salary chart for next season I made up. I don't see the space.

Kreider won't get that much. You can carve at least the $850K off that. Zucc's about right. Pouliot is not a hot commodity really either--would the Rangers do that much?--maybe, maybe not. Dom Moore will get about the same money as this year to come back. John Moore's about right. I don't see Dan Boyle coming to the Rangers.

Anyway to the question of buying out Richards--yes--the question of signing Stastny--anything beyond 4 years $5.5 mil per--no.

I think the Rangers can survive just fine with Stepan and Brassard as the 1-2 and I'm kind of thinking that JT Miller if given the chance to play center can at least equal the numbers that Anisimov used to put up for us. He's improved quite a bit from last year to this year.

Agree especially since he just got hurt and it seems to be serious... yea sign him to even more money even tho brad is the better player:shakehead

A healthy Stastny is better than Richards.

Equal offensive production and that's with trying to force feed Gaborik and Nash down Richards throat (now it's MSL see how that works)

Stastny is a better defensive player.

Stastny is better on draws

Stastny is faster

I would still prefer to improve the LW over signing Stastny, but if the back injury proves to be a minor muscle tweak, Stastny at 7.5 on a 71 million cap hit is just .4% higher than Richards a 6.66 against a 64 million cap.

meaning foot pring being marginally different, I would take the younger and statistically better player.

But that's just me.

We have to dump Richards. Too old, signed for too long.

We also should make a play for Stastny. He is in his prime and will be for most of his contract. Even the last year of his contract, Stastny won't be old. He would be an upgrade on Brad immediately.

It would also allow us to trade Brass for either a #1 or another player/prospect we need.

Brass+Hagelin could fetch back a very good young LW. But even if we just get a draft pick, Stastny + #1 is better (short term and long term) than having Brassard.

I'm honestly surprised this is even garnering such a discussion here on HF. I thought everyone thought it was a no-brainer that Richie would be gone come July :dunno:

Let's just say, for arguments sake, that Richards retires when he is 37, after the 2016-2017 season. The Rangers get smashed with a cap hit of $5.667 million for three years (through 2019-2020). Not to mention, that's 3 more seasons of an aging Brad Richards on the team at a hit of $6.667million.

I understand that we're in a bit of a bind here with a 2C problem once Richie is gone, but that's money we can get off the books for free. It has to happen, IMO.

Some people are reluctant to dump Brad because he is having a decent season, likely to get 60+ points. Despite people's unreasonable expectations, that is first line offensive production (Brad is tied for 50th in points among all NHL forwards and, by definition, there are 90 first liners).

Not singling you out, as I've seen this argument before, but I hate it. I really do.

Stepan and Richie are also in the top 30 among points for centers this season.

So the Rangers have TWO number 1 centers! :yo:

Not how it works.

Honestly, if I were Richards, I would want to get bought out. His buyout $ plus a new contract he will fetch will be more than what he makes on the Rangers.

If he plays another 4-6 seasons, his new contract will be more than his current one, not counting buyout money. Even if he retires in 3 years, he still will make close to the same while adding buyout cash. And he can go to a Cup contender whose fans appreciate him.

HF doesn't believe in this kind of math, however.

There are only 20 top line centers, 12 #1 d-men, 18 starting goalies and 22 head coaches.

If John Moore was on our first pairing, would that make him a #1 defensemen?

Edit: Nvm, I misinterpreted your point.

But the problem is that John Moore would never stick on the first pairing permanently, at least not the way he's currently playing.
