No.

Crosby, Malkin, and Letang all stayed healthy last season and performed at elite levels, yet the Penguins still missed the playoffs.

At age 36, 36, and 37 the odds of that repeating are pretty slim. Karlsson will be put on a leash and will finish with closer to 70 points while bleeding goals on the backend. Jarry is as shaky as ever too. Too many young teams coming up.

Yes, they probably should have made it last year over Florida but they blew it.

They won’t win a round though.

The Penguins actually perform better when one of the big 3 is injured

Their top six last year of Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Zucker, Rakell, and Rust played 82, 82, 78, 82, and 81 games last year. Hard to imagine they stay that healthy this year. I’m also not sold on Jarry and Nedeljkovoc is a downgrade to CDS until proven otherwise (though it’s entirely possibly he finds his form again for Pittsburgh).

They’ll be right in the mix but if some of the younger teams take a step forward it’s hard to see them getting in, though I do think they’ll overtake the Islanders this season.

I'll say yes. Although the Eastern Conference is just tough in general.

They just barely missed last year, and I think they're overall better. They will probably have worse health, but that should be offset by more reasonable goaltending.

I don’t really see what Detroit has to break out tbh. They’re a pretty mediocre roster who, had poor numbers across the board last year. They need improvement just to have 80 points again. I could see Buffalo or Ottawa making it 5 Atlantic teams though
What part of the Detroit lineup is worse from last year?

I'm seeing a lot of talk about Letang being healthy but missing 18 games due to having a stroke and taking compassionate leave for his dad dying - something that's going to weigh on your mind - isn't my idea of healthy.

I guess it depends on how the wildcards shake out but other than Carolina, NJ, and maybe the Rangers on a good day, I don't see who's better in the Metro.

They'll probably get some help from the officials, due to veteran clout. They got the 2nd most PPs last season despite being old and slow. But I'll still say no.

Where did I say they were a worse roster? They need to get better just to get to 80 points again because the team was lucky to get 80 points given their goal differential and other underlying metrics, and they wouldn’t get to 80 again playing that way again. I’m just not sure what makes them an “on the cusp” team just yet. They have a good prospect pool and some solid pieces but they’re not there yet.

I think if you just ran back last year’s team they’d have a better than even chance of making the playoffs. Just tough luck.

I think Kane ends up signing there in November if Pens start well.

Pens underlying metrics were actually pretty good last year. 5th in xgf for example. They just blew 17 third period leads. Roster is much improved - they'll make it.

They pretty much gave up when Rasmussen got injured. Traded away Bertuzzi, Hronek + Bertuzzi. The goal difference was -37 from 25th of February to the end of the season.

With the season on the line and while the team was falling out of playoff position, the Pens went 6-10 down the final stretch.

It wasn't luck. They just weren't good enough.

They're a coin flip team who may be able to sneak in on a WC spot.

But if I had to guess, I'd say they miss just because of their horrific goaltending and horrific team defense.

The team's improved from this year, and this year they only missed playoffs because they decided to lose to Chicago Blackhawks in their second-to-last game of the season, so it really wasn't about team strength this season, either.

How would it be logical to say that they will not?

Uh, are we talking about the same team?

The issue with the Penguins is by far a lack of forward depth. How do they have horrific goaltending and horrific team defense?

Because people think anyone on this site over 30 is washed up.

Don't like the bottom six, don't like the third pairing, and don't think either Graves or Pettersson is good enough to be a top LD on a club (both are better as the second pairing LD). Plus, I think Jarry is a mental midget who is also injury prone.

On the plus side, theoretically they should be able to score and their top six (theoretically) should keep them in games. And hopefully the addition of Karlsson turns a pathetic PP into one that can actually not piss away games like it did last year.

So I'd go 50/50 chance.
