But many people seem to dislike them because they "copy" the diagonal RANGERS look.

Do the Rangers own this design? What do you think?

The Rangers have been using it since 1926, besides a couple of years here and there. Those jerseys are nice, and I don't hate them for "copying," but they are definitely copying the design.

I don't dislike those Colorado jerseys because they're copying the Rangers. I dislike them because they're ugly.

Those Avs jerseys are hideous. Maroon is a terrible colour even though I know it's often used in many team sports - and Colorado generally has very nice looking jerseys and colour schemes. As for the original question - I could care less as it is absolutely irrelevant. Those Pittsburgh jerseys are nice
though.

It's probably not an original design/concept by the Rangers, but they've been using it for the majority of their existence. Long before the Penguins or Avalanche existed.

As an aside, why the hell did they go to that dumb shield design during the Esposito era? Those were terrible jersey's. Damn, did those piss off my dad, a ranger fan, off.

Also, got to admit, I loved their 3rd jerseys with the Statue of Liberty.

I like the Rangers current thirds, their heritage jerseys with the diagonal "New York." Those are my second favorite jerseys in the league after the Sharks heritage jersey.

Eh.... I think that the Rangers get a pass as they've done it for so long. My problem with that.... "logo" design is that it's just lazy. Sure, there's something to be said for a simple yet classy look, but I'd much rather teams actually sport their logo front and center. Don't think that the Avs or Penguins should bring it back, nor do I think that other teams should emulate it. Make a good logo instead!

It's also a reason why I think that the Rangers shield logo should be disqualified from any NHL logo rankings, as they don't wear the thing except as a secondary on their shoulders. That'd be like ranking MLB logos and including this:

rather than this:

Can anyone own such a basic design? It's not exactly groundbreaking and was probably done before the Rangers did it.

The earliest that I know of are the jerseys of the Victoria Aristocrats. They played in the PCHA, which was the western pro league... a bit like today's Western Conference:

Another western team that used diagonal text before the Rangers came around:

Technically the Vancouver Millionaires had diagonal letters, though they got a bit more creative with it:

Aside from the Rangers, early NHL use of diagonal letters included the original All Star Game jerseys in 1934, and the uniforms of the Brooklyn Americans circa WWII.

No..... Intellectual property wouldn't cover such a vague design concept unless the entity using it spells "New York" or "Rangers".

The Pittsburgh jersey works quite easily, while the Avalanche does not. It may be the maroon or the font, but it doesn't say "classic jersey" like NYR and Pitt do. Or maybe I just hate Forsberg more than I thought.

As a Penguins fan - yes and no.

I have less of an issue with the jerseys the Penguins wore in their inaugural season, which followed this template, than I do with the ones in the 90s for the simple reason that the 1967 designs at least tried to do some interesting things on their own, at least in regards to the striping and fonts. That said, those 1967 designs were just bad...the mid-90s version has as many fans as it has detractors, but I don't know of anyone who likes those original jerseys enough to go to bat for them, they're pretty much universally reviled by Pens fans. The 90s ones also had differences (namely the lack of a yoke and the shoulder striping), but still come off as blatant rip-offs in my eyes.

Frankly, outside of one-off throwbacks to those 1967 jerseys I never want to see the Penguins wearing this look again (as ugly as they are, you can't just hide the fact that the team wore those in their first season...I expect them to make one-off appearances on major anniversaries, including this season). It can be a nice look, but it's the Rangers look. I don't like the idea of a team 'owning' anything...but to me the Rangers have been using that look for long enough, and it's distinct enough that whenever anyone wears a jersey that looks like that, they're inviting the comparison...and that shouldn't be what designers set out to invoke.

I'd like those diagonal 90s 'PITTSBURGH' jerseys a hell of a lot more if not for the Rangers...but you can't ignore the comparisons, and it just stands out in such a way that I don't like it. I mean, the current template is based on the Red Wings...but there's a very real reason for that (started out as an homage to the Pittsburgh Hornets, who were the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings in the 60s), and it's not as blatantly obvious without looking at side-by-side comparisons, mostly because of how different the color schemes are and how different the striping is (really the sleeves are the only things remotely similar).

Personally I kinda view it like the Steelers only having the logo on one side of their helmet...it's too distinctly unique (the Rangers started wearing that look back when the Pirates were in the NHL; the Steelers since helmet decals became a thing) and has been worn by one team for so long that any variation of it would inherently look like a rip-off.

Regarding the Steeler helmet decals, no one else could do that. All NFL teams must have logos on both sides of the helmet (not applicable to throwback uniforms). The Steelers have an exemption to only have it on one side (as do the Browns to have a blank helmet).
