Do Avs Still Trade Rantanen if They Know He Ends up in Dallas

I still feel the same way. Love him at $9m. Not so much at $12. I'm not entirely convinced he'll be a 100 point guy without MacKinnon and Makar and I think it'll create some issues on this next deal.

Saying this about a guy who eliminated you in game 7 with four points in the 3rd, including a hat trick, is wild.

Rantenan, himself, said he wanted to stay and would have taken less to do so. We'll never know exactly what that meant, but it gave the impression Colorado thought he was a product of MacKinnon and they could get a cheaper player (Necas) to play close to if not on par with Rantenan for less.

His play in Carolina and Dallas early on really showed just how completely blindsided he was. Hell, when asked about it after literally crushing Colorado's dreams, he said how much he loved them. "They're my brothers."

Not exactly what you expect to hear from a guy who had any aspirations of leaving.
I pretty much don’t believe what athletes or politicians say. For years Taveras would say “I’d like to be a guy who spends his career with one team” or “don’t expect to see me in a Toronto uniform”..then pow wow it was “childhood dreams come true” when he signs with Toronto.

He’s like top 10 all time in playoff ppg 🥴

& has superior stats vs Mackinnon for game 7’s

Maybe Avs should trade Mackinnon as he fails to carry a roster..

The reason he’s not an Avs is that Colorado refused to pay him 12.5M

Which is ridiculous given the current market value for superstars and the cap exploding

I mean, I said it in early March… It’s not like I popped in to post that after the game.

Rantanen is an excellent hockey player. If we’re picking 2 $13m+ guys to roll with, I still like the ones we chose. One game doesn’t change that.

He never came close to doing what he's done for Dallas. Either way, it's a moot point. Colorado didn't want to build a team with 3 players taking up the majority of the salary.
Do you expect Necas to take a discount after beeing PPG this season and is a UFA 2026? I dont see Avs saving more than 2M with this trade.

Will never drive play and not creative but possesses the clutch gene. Stupid trade by the Avs who ended up with a soft, regular season perimeter player.

My bad man, I was high when I wrote it, thought it said May.

In any event - Rantanen is one of the OG core pieces. He’s elite. You already won a cup with him.

Sign him, and figure the rest out as you go. The cap is going to be $113M in a couple years - they’ll have $80M to build the rest of the team.

Martin Necas is fine. He doesn’t know how to win like Rantanen does.

But does it matter if he's not a 100 point guy?

If he's having playoffs like this, who cares if he's now a 70-80 point guy for the rest of his career?

I think his playoff performance makes up for the drop in production.

Things change. I get what you're saying, but if life teaches us one thing, it's that everything changes.

The Toronto comparison I keep seeing doesn't make sense and I hope it isn't the logic Colorado used to decide to trade Rantanen. It's much harder to win paying three guys the amount that the Leafs are paying Marner, AM and Willy when Marner and AM haven't shown the ability to dominate in the playoffs whereas Mack and Rantanen have.

The …. are the best

They keep wondering where this version of Rantanen was

Well he scored at en elite clip all the time post Cup, so I’d say that’s okay and again they player him like a top pairing Dman for 82 games and where surprised that he looked gassed, no kidding..

I’m so happy that he’s out of Denver and can finally get some respect

Even after posting back to back 100 point seasons and being one of the best playoff players all we heard was he’s not worth the money

Obviously if he wins a Conn Smythe carrying Dallas to a cup, we’ll look stupid. But he never did that for us in all his years here. He’s currently having his best playoff production of his career. If he can hold this gear the rest of the way, it’ll be a little surprising/disappointing to those in Colorado where he always played great but seemed content being #3.

He hasn’t done it yet in Dallas yet either. So I’ll wait to concede that point until it happens.

Bro I hate to break it to you, but I’m pretty sure that’s already happened. Conn Smythe and a cup would just be the cherry on top
