Do Avs Still Trade Rantanen if They Know He Ends up in Dallas

Would such a clause (can’t trade Rantanen to a list of clubs) be approved by the league? Maybe a clause where there’s added compensation would have worked?

Yes, it's called the Hoffman clause. Google the Karlsson trade. It's not a specific list of clubs, Ottawa would have received a 1st if Karlsson appeared on the reserve list of a team in the Eastern Conference. (Might have just been Atlantic Division.)

What a gut punch that must be to see the dude you traded away end your season with a hat trick in game 7 of the playoffs.

Sports are cruel sometimes.
They didn’t trade him to Dallas initially. Not their fault he ended up there since they thought he’d be in the East.

You think I’m sad that Colorado lost?

The question your post was answering was:

Do Avs Still Trade Rantanen if They Know He Ends up in Dallas

I’m pointing out how out of pocket you were, but don’t get sensitive about it, you weren’t the only one just the one I was reading when I decided to point out how many L’s people were taking in this thread.

It’s much cooler when you just admit you were wrong

Not sensitive. I don’t mind being wrong on this one. And I still think Colorado should have done better considering their talent. They shouldn’t be scared of opponents with Makar and MacKinnon.

I think Colorado’s problem in the series, and recent years, was the goaltending. As far as Rantenan, unless you have a signature on a contract extension, you can not have a Islanders lose John Taveras for nothing situation

It is their fault

Instead of paying him around 12.5 they chose to trade him

He was never going to walk

He loved Denver and had just bought a massive house there

Trading him was the action of a stupid GM. 12 x 8 g fog or Rantanen, with the rising cap, is very fair. That GM is an idiot. Can’t figure what he was thinking. Now he’s got the same issue with Nescas needing a new contract in 2026. And he’s a guy who might command 10 x 8 considering his regular season production. Just makes no sense what the AVsGM did.

It is pretty obvious that they didn't want to pay him. Whether it was 12M or 14M. This didn't seem to be something where they went to the wire and did everything they did to re-sign him, and then went to the trade market. Everybody was caught off guard. Including Rantanen, MacKinnon, etc.

Friedman speculated about Makar's contract coming up, and certain teams not wanting to spend to the rising cap. It could have been that. It could have just been Colorado feeling that he wasn't a 12M or 14M player for the next 8 seasons after this one.

This is one of the worst trades of all time and it will set their franchise back years. Think of all the implications now. They have MacKinnon losing his guy, and then losing to that same guy. They just blew through a boatload of assets to go all in and lost in the first round.

Let's put it this way. In terms of draft picks and prospects, what value would people put on winning that game 7 and having a continued shot at winning another cup? The Rantanen trade directly impacted their ability to move on in the playoffs, and that is only this season. He's going to be on Dallas for the remainder of MacKinnon's prime.

People say how were they supposed to know that he'd end up with a division rival, but this is what management teams are paid to think about. This was a very unique trade, so people can't just say that clause is never used. Franchise players like Rantanen are almost never traded, let alone traded early in season without a contract extension.

As soon as he was traded there was speculation and reports that Carolina might flip him. So if guys like Friedman could figure out that flipping Rantanen might be a possible outcome of that trade, there is no reason that an entire room of experienced hockey execs shouldn't have concluded it as being possible.

At the end of the day, there are other seasons and you can't let an asset like Rantanen leave for nothing

I wonder what Carolina was going to do if they didn’t get Rantanen. They’ve wanted big names the last couple seasons. Stank is a good young player but the Hurricanes were clearly looking for a player more in his prime. I wonder if they trade the 1st as part of a package for a big name

Rantenan, himself, said he wanted to stay and would have taken less to do so. We'll never know exactly what that meant, but it gave the impression Colorado thought he was a product of MacKinnon and they could get a cheaper player (Necas) to play close to if not on par with Rantenan for less.

His play in Carolina and Dallas early on really showed just how completely blindsided he was. Hell, when asked about it after literally crushing Colorado's dreams, he said how much he loved them. "They're my brothers."

Not exactly what you expect to hear from a guy who had any aspirations of leaving.

They ended up winning 3 games against Dallas this time around. And, that's with Rantanen on Dallas. I don't think it was easy for either side. But, no one should feel sorry for Rantanen at this point. He got his money and he's in a WAY better team now.

I’m sure they were aware there was a chance he’d get flipped if Carolina didn’t come to an understanding by the TDL… or that he’d hit free agency over the summer. Either way there’s a chance he ends up with a division rival.
