Dman vs. forward shoulder pads

IDK, I have shoulder pads similar to the first set. I guess it's a matter of compromising between two things.

1. Protection
2. Comfort

Go with whatever feels most comfortable but gives you a good amount of protection.

If I played defense, I'd get a much more protective shoulder pad as I'd be in the way of a lot more pucks, especially with more protection in the chest and back. But as a forward, I love my Sherwood 5030's because they're lightweight and breathe and keep me a lot cooler on the ice.

Depends more on what type of league you are in. If it's contact, rec league most will wear something a bit bigger. If it's contact in a more serious setting most will wear something more mobile, yet still protective. If it's no contact most will wear something small.

Take a look at the NHL, most guys are either wearing Jofa or old small cooper/bauer and even sherwood 5030.

sherwood 5030!! wow, do you ever get hurt? What kind of league do you play in? does it hurt when you get hit? what about pucks hitting you...?
thanks

I was wondering if there's a big difference between a defense man's shoulder pads and a forward's. I'm guessing if there is one, it's the size or the amount of protection.
Typically, a defense men's shoulder pads would be this:

and a forward's shoulder pads:

anyone?

There is a difference. The shoulder pads for defensemen are noticably bulkier and protect more. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily say they are designed specifically for defensemen, so much as for levels of protection. I'm a skating defenseman, and I wear a pretty small set of pads and have had no problems at all with them.

I'm confused, are you telling us or asking?

Typically, you wear what you feel will most likely give you the best movement and protection for what do.

a bit of both. I was assuming. Just wanted to have your point of vue.:)

Sorry, I play lower level rec league. I've been hit by pucks and it doesn't bother me. Of course, I've also taken pucks off the bicep and stomach where there isn't any protection and it didn't bother me for more than a minute, but we don't exactly have Al Macinnis teeing them up.

If I played defense, I'd probably wear Stealth S9's as I love the Stealth protective gear and it's got a lot more protection and coverage.

I'll definitely try it before I buy it. I play competitive hockey so I have to make sure I have enough protection. thanks for the help.

No such thing as forward or defense shoulder pads. It's clearly preference some guys dont need or feel the need for protection while others do its all how you feel and your style.

These Bauer 8000s work for me...I mostly play wing. Of course, the only reason I bought them is because I anticipated falling down a lot...which I do, so they work well.

Plenty of HS guys I've played with wore barebones shoulder pads...so it's definitely a personal preference. I mean, you can have a ton of padding on you and the puck still might hurt a bit if you took one to the chest or something unless you reallly went over kill with padding. But then at that point you might as well play goalie.

Only thing for fowards and defenseman is having the extra padding in the abdoman area in case you wind up blocking a shot in a funny position. Thought like I say, might not help much, but it is better than nothing. It's not made specific for a defenseman, but it's nice to have if your back there. If your a foward, you probably won't be getting down and dirty with it, so going a bit lighter helps a bit.

I play College and I'm just fine in my 5030's. A couple of the guys on the team have them, or simmilar ones, including our #1 Dman.

Pucks, sure, that's pretty much the only real concern, but as far as hitting goes, neither myself, or anybody else who uses those pads have gotten hurt because of them (or at all upper body wise). Large plastic shoulder caps do not prevent you from seperating your shoulder, or breaking a collar bone, ect, proper positioning (ex. putting your body against the glass to soften the blow), and not putting yourself in a position to get rocked does.

I won't say that taking a puck in the chest feels good, but the benifits, such as lightness, and restrictionless movement, greatly outweigh the drawbacks for me.
