DIY Goal?

Tried searching, but haven't found anything that helps me much.

I'm thinking of building my own goal, partly to save some money, and partly because I have more fun doing stuff like that myself than just sending off for something.

This would be for backyard shooting practice off of a shooting pad, ideally able to move around the yard somewhat easily.

I have a design that I drew up using 2x3 lumber, it's cheap and I think would hold up well if I prime and paint it properly. The plus side of this is that I can make it fold up (a couple well placed hinges and slide blots will allow the sides to fold in on the back).

I'm a little concerned that the wood might be too brittle.

Is it feasible to use black steel pipe? It seems to me that it might be pretty easy to put something together using standard threaded pipe from a home depot-type store, but no way to make it all one piece. Like there would have to be one "unfinished" part that ends in a "dead end" rather than a closed "circuit" of pipe.

Why don't you try to use PVC piping? You can easily get joints to close it all off, and it'll look better than wood.

Because PVC piping will only last as long as it takes to hit a post.

They sell a piece that lets you join two ends of black pipe, so you could make it a loop. I guess that'd be the easiest way to get a net on too. It's bigger than the pipe, looks like a big nut. I probably have one around here I could take a picture of if you want to see it.

I just recently built one out of PVC. I used a 1 inch thick piece. I've hit the post a few times and it has yet to break. I'm just starting out and my shots not that hard but not weak eaither. Its holding up. I did however break one of the joints the first day but its still holding on great.

PVC would get destroyed quickly. Wood isn't bad.

What I would do is make a shooting tarp and frame. Build a bigger frame (maybe 8' wide by 6' tall) out of your 2x3's, then hang a billboard tarp from it.

Benefit of this is less wear and tear on the "pipes" because they are tape instead of wood or plastic. You'll probably hit the odd frame but not nearly as often. Also, you won't have to worry as much about pucks bouncing off the posts and into neighbors yards or windows.

For outside shooting, I'd also look at building a little platform to shoot from, even something as simple as laying down a thick sheet of plywood and then putting your shooting pad on top of that, because you can't shoot off a pad laying on the grass.

Yeah, I think I know what you mean, but as far as I can figure, there would still be one part of the goal that you couldn't close up, because you'd have to be able to thread one end of the pipe into one coupling, and then thread the other and (which would loosen the first end, no?)


And thanks Jarick, that's funny, I also have an 8x10 tarp that I'm planning to hang as a backstop, I have similar hardware, and I'm going to mount it to some pressure-treated 2x4 i have around. At first I thought I'd just paint a 6x4 area on it to use as a target, but then I thought it'd be nice to have the depth that and actual goal provides, and it would help keep pucks in one place (hopefully, if my shooting is accurate enough).
