Johnson has been in the scheme for a long time. NB in the scheme is harder than safety with what the teams asks of the NB. Johnson won't need to put in an entire training camp worth of work to play 15-20 plays at safety for one game.

Not to say that the Bills are doing that. But I got to the Bills two years after they moved Bennett to ILB in a 3-4, and three years after the implemented a 2-5 defense in-season when Bruce Smith was hurt. It's not that difficult.

It takes more than one or two practices to do it at a high level.

And if they haven't been working it in practice up until now, they aren't likely to try it leading up to a big playoff game.

Given the choice of going 4-3 and taking one of your best defenders off the field, or the possibility of Johnson maybe not playing safety at a high level, I'll take the latter all day. Johnson is flat out a better player than any safety on Buffalo's roster. I'll take my chances with him at safety over leaving him off the field.

And if Babich is indeed considering this move for 15-20 plays, there's no way they'd do it in an open practice. Reporting on Cam Lewis is one thing. Reporting on Johnson playing safety and the Bills shfting to a 4-3 for part of a game is serious inside information that no one in the organization is going to say a thing about.

In terms of snap percentages, Ty is more or less the #2.

Ty Johnson has been getting more snaps and touches of late than Ray Davis.

Johnson's ability to pass protect, has him getting more reps because he is their primary blocking RB on pass plays.

Depending on the recent game, Davis can get a few more touches. But, Johnson has been regularly getting more snaps and sometimes by a healthy gap.

It all depends on the personnel, play, alignment, motion, etc.

You might see a safety cover him, a CB cover him, or TB or Milano covering him.

Plus, they play a lot of zone, too.

Since we are talking about defensive personnel, one wrinkle they have added with Milano back is a 3-2-6 Dime package where they have Groot-Oliver-Von as the DL, TB & Milano as the LBs, and then Cam Lewis comes in as their Dime safety.

This was the personnel on the Groot sack and Milano was the spy mirroring Nix.

I won't be shocked if this is what they go with on long and late downs.

Football is so interesting. It has to be the hardest American sport to coach. Milano coming back has such a big ripple effect on this defense. It really could take a solid unit and make it very good. Time will tell. Let's just hop Milano is rounding back into form!

I think they go to these looks (odd mirror) in long and late downs especially against QBs with escapability, I saw the look a few times against KC (the final drive where TB picks off Mahomes is the notable one) with Dorian spying. It's not really a "new" thing as it's always been in their arsenal, but it's one they'll need this round and further if hopefully they make it (Mahomes + 2/4 of the remaining NFC teams have mobile QBs).
