WC: Division 1A 2025., Sfantu Gheorghe 27.04 - 3.05.

Don't know what Poland is doing leaving players open in the slot all the time, especially Zakharov, the top goal scorer of the tourney. Still, I'll take it! 3-1 Ukraine.

That all unraveled rather quickly for Poland, as it stands they'll need Romania to do them a favour on Saturday for the final game v GB to even matter as far as promotion's concerned.

That Shootout win for GB on the opening day also now looks a much better result than it did immediately following the game...

Yep, I am too wondering about what if Dyachenko was in the net against GB that day... Levshyn is decent prospect, but probably was the wrong choice with hindsight.

Bit out of the blue, but your nickname just always gets me and at first I think you support team Italy not GB. Aquaregia... doesn't get more Italian than that haha

Any thoughts today @SoundAndFury? It's the only day you haven't commented on GB :D

Delighted for Ukraine! What a result, just need a point against Japan? Who may already be relegated by the time the game rolls round.

GB just need a point against Poland, who should be out of contention by the time the game is played. Realistically, we have found our top two today. But you never know what can happen!

Another thing I'll say is that the Khrystych coached teams seem to have a ton more mental strength than previous years. Maybe a bit of experience for the top players as well but in years past after that first goal by Poland they would have unravelled and taken stupid penalties galore, like they did against Japan and Korea a few years back when fighting for promotion from D1B. This game they weren't even phased when their first goal was called back and Poland scored, they brushed it right off and got back to it.

Very creative O-zone set, save but then Romania did not protect the slot. Japan are really skating well.

2-0

As of now, Romania is down. Italy will beat them in last round, but Italy still needs help from either Poland or Japan.

Ukraine need only one point vs Japan, while GB need one point vs Poland. Poland has a smaaaall chance, but then they need to beat GB and get help from Romania.

I have never seen a Japanese team play with such confidence.

If Japan play like this, they have a chance against Ukraine. Should be a fascinating final day.

Romania have been completely over run.. the most dominant period of this event by any team I would say.

How is it possible Ukraina is better than in 20 years due to the situation in their country? Weird. Not just just this tournament but also in wjc.

Well the hockey in the country was on the up, arenas were being built everywhere so the kids were picking up the game left and right, then the war happened and these kids ended up in pretty much every western country in the world where the competition allows them to progress better/further than they would just playing locally.

Also we would not be having this conversation if two countries would not been banned from the top group so there's also that.

It skews the rankings, but objectively it gives “minor” nations more matches against the big leaguers. So another reason why I am fine with it.

Italy would benefit most of course from this result staying as it is; they'd be guaranteed at worst 2nd place with a regulation win over Romania.

Not the most likely scenario but if Italy need OT to beat Romania then we could have a scenario where four teams tie on 9 points at the end of the tournament (requiring Poland to beat GB in reg); Ukraine would take gold and GB silver in the tiebreaker in that case.

Vorona makes it 2-3 meanwhile and we've got a grandstand last 10 minutes; Ukraine had been stunned for quite a while by that 1-2 punch from Japan in the 2nd period but they've come back to life!

Ukraine get a PP on a holding call against Japan but can't create much of a clear chance, not aided by the fact that Merezhko's stick snapped in two receiving the most innocuous looking pass on Japan's blue line, and was left having to paw the puck away with his gloves to prevent a Japan breakaway.

That makes it 11 minutes and 4 seconds without scoring for Ukraine on PPs in total this game, and it looks like it will cost them dear.

Japan cling on for a result that brings them not more than a bit of extra pride; the best they can hope for is to finish fourth.

For Ukraine to be promoted, they now need either Romania to take at least one point against Italy, or for Poland to take all three against GB.
