This analysis is great. Just wondering where you pulled your data from?

Thanks! Data is from Wikipedia, which is generally pretty reliable... but you know, grain of salt and all. Also, it is important to note that it's not true GSAA (which is calculated using save percentage), but rather from the goalie's GAA versus the team's average opponent GF due to lack of data. I just manually calculated it knowing each team's schedule. For example, for 1902,

1902Games Played Wins Losses Ties Goals For Goals Against GF/GPGA/GPAvg. Opponent GFAvg. Opponent GA
Montreal Hockey Club 862039154.881.883.504.25
Ottawa Hockey Club 853035154.381.883.634.25
Montreal Victorias 844036254.503.133.593.94
Quebec Hockey Club 844026343.254.253.913.66
Montreal Shamrocks 817015621.887.754.252.78
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Montreal HC's opponents scored an average of 3.50 goals per game (average of 4.38, 4.50, 3.25, and 1.88). (The joys of a balanced schedule!)

Two goalies had a 1.7 GAA that season: Billy Nicholson and Bouse Hutton.

Name Club GP GA SO GAA Avg. Oppo. GF/GPGSAA
Billy Nicholson Montreal81521.73.5014.40
Bouse Hutton Ottawa81521.73.6315.44
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
My "GSAA" is calculated by:

[(Average Opponent GF/GP) - (GAA)] x GP

So for Billy Nicholson, [3.5 - 1.7] x 8 = 14.4.

In turn, for Bouse Hutton, [3.63 - 1.7] x 8 = 15.44.

Thanks the response. I figured out how you calculated and realilzed that getting save % would have been pretty tricky from data back then. The analysis is enough to give us a pretty good idea who was solid behind the pipes. Too bad Bouse left to play lacrosse in Brantford as I bet Ottawa would have won even more cups after 1905. That said, I believe lacrosse turned professional in 1904 which probably explains why Hutton was scooped.

I guess it´s possible. I have in my notes that officially Hutton was professionalized in Lacrosse in 1905 so that would have briefly prevented him to play hockey with Ottawa.

Dave Finnie who came with many others from Aberdeens was with the winning Silver Seven in 1905. And in 1906 Silver Seven with Hague in goal could hold it until the last challenge of the season.

Billy Hague had a bad first game. And even though he had quite succesful pro career (was still around when NHL started) he was unfairly mainly remembered from that game. He became the target of blame for that defeat. Then they obviously hired LeSueur who I believe from the start was atleast nearly in the class of Hutton. And I believe at this point Wanderers and even Kenora Thistles had build extremely strong teams.
