It's Phaneuf. His first 4 seasons in the NHL were very good offensively. By the time he was Nurse's current age he was pretty much done as a useful defensemen though. Really fell off a cliff quickly. I'd take Nurse for longevity and maybe when it's all said and done a better overall career.

They're basically the same exact player. Phaneuf is the absolute best comparable you can come up with for Nurse.

Nurse has never been the offensive weapon Prime Phaneuf was.

Hockey sense was never Dion’s bag, but he was a really gifted offensive defenseman. His one-timer was devastating.

He never the same after hip surgery robbed him of his explosiveness.

Nurse has never impacted the game at the level of Dion Phaneuf during his first four years.

Very similar d-men, good thread oppie

Phaneuf had a very dominant year as a #1 then tailed off. Nurse also had a dominant year as a #1 then regressed (at least a bit) both had periods where they were a #1 but came back to earth to being more like a #3.
