Did the Preds make a mistake hiring Trotz as GM?

1st he made moves to suggest rebuild/retool just as quickly to make moves to compete now and this summer decided to go all in with a flawed roster

I see a team that’s not good enough to compete, not bad enough to draft difference makers so they are pretty well stuck in a no man’s land going nowhere

I don't think so, everyone was hailing them as the winners of the off season, he's not to blame that the high end players he signed didn't work out.

No GM can see the future.

That’s why they are paid the big pucks

To build for the future in the offseason

He went all in with a core of 34-35y players, it’s not that difficult to see that they are just at the end of their primes or already out of it

He also hold on to Askarov for too long, if you were clearly going to sign Saros you need to trade Askarov earlier before handcuffing yourself. He was their only elite future asset and undersold it

you cant coach and gm can you?
I can't tell if you're making fun of OP saying they can't coach and gm, or if you're asking if it's possible to be both coach and gm.

If it's the latter, it is possible. Bob Murray was our GM and interim head coach for 26 games in 18-19.

Too early to say one way or the other.

But it's pretty clear that being an amazing coach doesn't make a guy automatically a fantastic GM. Two very different skillsets

I could've told you that and I absolutely 100% look down on Trotz for thinking otherwise. No one's allowed to think a 34 year old who put up 80 points playing with a 140 point scorer(on the PP, from where HALF his points came) would put up anywhere NEAR that on a starless team. A disreputable thought with no process behind it.

I also could've told you McDonagh was one of his most important players, but ever since tiktok, youtube highlight videos and hockeydb took over the prevailing thought is that if you ain't danglin' you ain't playin'...

Great coach, but so far his GM career has been very questionable.

Fabbro, Askarov and Tomasino all lost for basically nothing significant in return.

Made one of the biggest missteps of the offseason by signing Stamkos to that contract when most people knew his ES play has cratered.
How about the Ekholm trade? The oilers are non playoff team without that trade
