As I see the Rangers lackluster showing against Boston, and overall decline in play from 2012 I wonder a few things.

1) Obviously the team relative to the 2011 and 2012 still struggles to score. There is a lack of top six consistent goal scoring and not much offensive blue line help, talent.

2) In 2011 and 2012 the Rangers were extremely consistent. Game in and game out you could count on them to show, work hard, play excellent defense, and out grit you.

The past two seasons, this has not been the case. The Rangers have been inconsistent, the defense has made more lapses, and the forechecking/board work has been lacking. They aren't griddy, they sometimes look just downright mediocre dare I say like the Gomez era teams.

This has me thinking, the Rangers truly miss both Dubinsky and Prust. Along with Callahan, these guys were the heart of our team.
I thought the Rangers were becoming like the Bruins, and with Dubi we had our Marchand/Lucic and Prust was our Thornton type-excellent fourth liner.

Since we lost both, it just is staggering how and why the Rangers can't recapture the tremendous work ethic in 2011 and 2012.

I think losing these two, killed the heart of team.

It is understandable needing to get goal scoring with Rick Nash, but couldn't Hags or Del Zotto been moved?
As for Prust, yes his contract was rich, but he never should have left if Dubinsky was going to be traded.
He could have been afforded and all the Asham, Powe, Pyatt's could have not been signed.

Anybody with me on this?

Surely you jest. Losing, "I go into 20 game stretches where I don't score and I'm completely lazy Dubinsky", is no loss at all. Prust was a good role player but that is it.

Any team that can be killed by the loss of a 3rd and 4th liner is a team that deserves to be put out to pasture.

Thank you!

I bet anything if we had the same team last season, even if Richards and Gabby's game didn't fall off a cliff, that team would be a 6th seed at best. The 11-12 team overachieved something fierce.

It's not them specifically as players. It is the constant building, reshuffling and destructing of cultures and philsophies for how to win that losing them represents.

Build a home grown high compete level team. Damn we need skill. Trade for skill. Well now we need depth, crap. Shoot now we don't compete anymore and are getting run out of the building one in three games. Whoops. Gotta add some players that battle. Annnd around and around.

I am struggling with words today but hopefully you get my point.

Then how come this team lacks heart, consistancy, toughness, and that game to game suffocating defense from 2011 and 2012?

It just is a coincidence that after losing both, they now resemble game to game more the Gomez era?

You act like the team won something with Dubinsky and Prust. They won nothing. Squat.

I truly believe this team is one smart trade and one big FA signing away next year from being one of top teams in the league. However, the FA signing really depends on what the trade brings back.

That team's suffocating defense is completely overblown. When Lundqvist and Biron had an off month and a half 2.7 goals against in that March and April (till the playoffs). Lundqvist is having an off year (even his biggest supporters agree) and the team since their horrible start when the goaltending was bad and the defense was worse but clearly is not representative of the team now has given up 1.85 goals per game. That team's suffocating defense was a myth. More like some of the best goaltending ever.

Dubi for Nash? Any team anywhere any universe makes that trade and never looks back.

Prust should have stayed but Montreal paid him the fat $$$...what are you going to do?

Can't forget that Dubi was a malcontent holdout for more more more $$$ and then FAILED to earn his check. He basically wrote his own ticket out of NY.

PRUST was THE MAN... but I don't recall anyone wanting to give him the money Montreal gave him. Yea he is a heart n soul kind of guy but he tallied 17pts TOTAL in his contract year and Montreal paid him 2.5 MILLION DOLLARS A SEASON till 2016?

Dubinsky held out in 2009 and actually had two of his best seasons after that. It was after his next contract in 2011, which was not a holdout, that he underperformed. Most Rangers fans get this mixed up for some reason.

When did we get crushed? Outside of one amazing year in 2011-12, this is the same team we've had every year since the lockout. Where's this big change people are seeing?

2011-12 was the outlier, not this year.

Apparently we can forget that, considering Dubinsky put up the two biggest seasons of his career following his short holdout (and would you consider Stepan a malcontent as well? His holdout went far longer).

Oh, and NYRSting, you have officially lost any right to gripe when people classify Callahan as a 3rd liner. I know Cally is your "can do no wrong" player and you are on a crusade to convince people that he's a 1st/2nd line tweener, but in 7 seasons, he's only outproduced Dubinsky twice, and Dubinsky had to be out hurt for a third of a season for the second one to happen. On a ppg basis, Dubinsky has outproduced Callahan both of the last two seasons (he's 5 points up this season, though to be fair, he has played three more games). Remind me again how you all but guaranteed that that would NEVER happen again? :shakehead

This thread is a waste of time. All it does is offer the same few guys another excuse to trot out their same old idiotic lines, most of which have been disproven time and time again.

Regardless, it wasn't JUST the loss of Dubi and Prust that caused the setback. Sather took a successful team and re-tooled it for no reason. We had WAY too much turnover for a team that successful, and that's what caused the problem. Were Dubi and Prust a part of that? Yep, but even if you put those two back, you are still going to see some setback from the loss of guys like Fedotenko, AA and a couple of others. Breaking up that team was pure idiocy, and yes, I said the same thing before the Nash trade. Hopefully this team gets some chemistry going so we can take advantage of the window that Henrik has remaining.

Nah, Dubi was bad, but he was doing other things well and this is coming from someone that was really annoyed with him that year.

Didn't mean that just that he couldn't score in the ocean right now, Dubi played hard and did all the intangibles right

Read the post above yours, not comparing them

I get what you're saying but I think Dom Moore would have been a better comparison. He hasn't scored a goal this year but everyone still likes him because he does other nice things. Pouloit does everything bad and nobody likes him.

Gotcha just reminds me of Higgins and Dubi when they couldn't buy a goal
