Did DeBoer just fire himself with the Oettinger fiasco?

DeBoer is like an all-star coach until he gets to the conference finals.

I do think he's had some aging and slower rosters to work with along the way which doesn't help, but to me it's glaring how they always seem to just run out of gas. Coach included.
Unlike Bednar. Who runs his top line and top D all season like a game 7 and that line runs out of gas 4 games into the 1st round 🤔

I think DeBoer was too transparent in the post-game. It was mean and bad form to call out his goalie like that.

That being said Oettinger was outplayed by Skinner in the series, and wasn't giving his team a chance to win in Game 5. DeBoer mentioned 1st and foremost he was sending a message. Oettinger also got outplayed by Ersson in his 1 4 Nations game.

I find it interesting to compare fanbases & "hockey universe" when the Stars w/ Oettinger lose and he's outplayed compared to a Canadian team, esp. Edmonton w/ Skinner lose a series or even have a couple bad goals or bad games. Both 26yo (young-emerging) goalies with >100 NHL wins
  • After 2 games of Round 1 it was like "has Skinner played his last game as an Oiler?"
    vs.
  • After losing WCF it's like "is DeBoer toast?"

Maybe he wants out out Dallas, so that’s why he made those comments. This way he gets paid out his contract. If he resigns then he doesn’t get paid. That’s the only way I can make sense of him making those comments

This whole "ready to play" mantra is nonsense. It's the player's responsibility to eat right, get proper rest, be mentally focused and DO THEIR JOB

Maurice said it. The player's run the bench, call out changes, etc. He just looks at matchups and as you aptly stated strategy

Once a player is past the collegiate level, the let's play hard, win one for the gipper and all those other happy horseshit thoughts are the stuff of movies

The coach doesn't skate, shoot or miss pucks that go into the net.
im of the opinon a coach has little impact on the game overall, they just funnel all the players towards a common goal in a common way and provide one on one counsel.

AFAIC all the rest is on the players.

Oettinger called McDavid the greatest player of all time, which is kinda odd considering Gretzky. It seems like he respects the Oilers too much and gives up.

Dallas is gonna drop like a bunch of bricks following serial underachievers like Benn, Duchess, Rants, Robb, and Oettinger. Mira is their only top top player and they made him come back in spite of injury and know he has torn ligaments in the other knee. DeBoer will available for about two seconds, he will go to NYR and win the cup

Really stupid comment. But I’m sure Otter has a thick enough skin to handle it. Heck, Otter might even agree.

DeBoer & Hiller both 100% should have been fired the apprentice style at the first opportunity
After the Oilers win the Cup this will be the new HNIC intro like Don Cherry bowing was for Coaches Corner lol

I mean… objectively Skinner is a tier below Oettinger, stats bare that out. One guy made his 4-nations cup team amidst tough competition. The other did not against much more questionable competition. One guy often credited for his team’s success, considered to be one of its best players… the other guy, not so much.

I have a high tolerance/appreciation for what Skinner brings to the table. But it’s not just “rabid hockey market” that has people criticizing Skinner.

1) He’s not that far off. You can respect a player and still want desperately to beat him.

2) Perry’s was a tap-in which fluttered in above his pad and arm… ie he was in position and a breakaway by Janmark (who is money on breakaways)… two super high danger chances and two goals. Those can go in on anyone and had very little, if anything (McD’s pass notwithstanding) to do with McDavid.

I’d take Otter on my team any day. Excellent goalie. If I were him, it would be a “him or me” demand to the GM.

You just cannot EVER single out the guy who has to wash away everybody else’s mistakes on a nightly basis (and play the full 60 mins in full concentration mode). Goalies know when they’ve made mistakes, heck the whole position is asking yourself “how can I be perfect”, “what can I do better” even in the face of massive mistakes from your teammates.

Even if those two goals were on Otter (they DEFINITELY weren’t) what purpose does laying the blame at the feet of ONE player accomplish after the fact?

Honestly PDB showed a lack of understanding of the game with that pull and even more so with the comments after the game. What a fraud.

Yup. Not Otters fault. The top Dallas players got crushed by the Oilers. Did even one Dallas player have a decent series?
Dallas had the edge in xG at 5v5 (like 13.1 to 10.9 iirc)

The issue was Dallas shot <5% (or Skinner was 95%+) while Edm shot 12.5% at 5v5 (or Otter was 87.5%)

I watched every minute of every game. Dallas got crushed popped. The loss wasn’t on Otter. Their top minute guys got dominated.
