Did DeBoer just fire himself with the Oettinger fiasco?

Yeah you must be right, I'm sure its a personal vendetta about sending a message. Lol.

Oettinger didn't bring his A game when the Stars needed it most, the 2nd goal was a piss poor effort on his part regardless of the defensive lapse. Amazing to see people defending a guy who gives up the first two shots he faced and visibly lost his composure.
Regardless of whether or not pulling Oettinger was the right call doesn't really matter.

You have one job as a coach in the last post game presser of the year and that is to not throw any player or your team under the bus. All he had to say was I thought that was the right call at the time and moved on to the next question.

Stars scored 1.8 goals a game this series. You'd look pretty dejected too if your team hung you out to dry for two shots and now 8 minutes into the game you know you've lost because your team can't score.
Yup! Like Canucks fans blaming Luongo for the Game 7 4-0 loss to Boston in 2011. It was 4-0 not 4-3...can only blame the goalie so much when, like you said, the team can't score or can't defend...

If DeBoer was Jamaican I'd assume the tension from his response would be cut in half

"Mi nuh put all di blame pon Jake, yuh zeet? But truth be told, if yuh check last year playoffs, di man lose six outta seven games to Edmonton. An’ in a do-or-die game, wi let in two goals off just two shots! ... Dat’s a whole heap a evidence, mi friend"

Going to be awkward between those 2. He does have a point though. Classic two things can be true at same time

Ott is elite and an amazing goalie
Ott has last 6 of his last 7 games against the Oilers in playoffs and has been outplayed by skinner (who is not elite and who is not going to the Olympics)

That was, 2 years in a row, a big edge to Dallas. Twice it didn't work.

The difference is Edmonton focused on minimizing turnovers and high danger chances. Dallas saw they were getting outchanced and the team did absolutely nothing to adjust. The entire squad was useless on offense and defense.

Otter vs Edmonton in 2025
1-3 .853 sv%
Skinner vs Dallas
4-1 .924 sv%

Otter vs Edmonton in 2024
2-4 .901 sv%
Skinner vs Dallas
4-2 .922 sv%

Sorry folks. Deboer was right.

I think Dallas is awesome.. but nothing went right for them. Well, that third period in the first game did.. that was amazing. Just slaughtered us.

Someone on NHL Network ripped Deboer for the decision. Basically said Deboer had a temper tantrum, and that if Deboer knew all this about Otter being terrible against Edmonton going into the game like he said in the post game presser, why not just start Desmith?

Sorry folks. Deboer was right.
Which part? When he said the defense coughed up the puck too often in their own zone and had brain farts leaving guys all alone in the slot? Or the part where he held the offense, which basically did nothing outside of one period out of 15, accountable for making Skinner look like a star?

Dallas' defense always confused me. A lot of talent on paper but completely incapable of playing anything close to shutdown hockey. The moment Miro came back Harley turned into a bottom pairing guy and that was it. You can't play against the two best players in the world with a bunch of old farts up front and a defense consisting of Miro, an aging Lindell and a bunch of cast-offs.

He wants to get fired. He'll still get paid by Dallas for the final year and he knows he'll still get a job offer somewhere else, given his relatively successful track record.

I wasnfine with the pull even though i wouldnt have done it. Desmith has been a good backup. But what he saidnto the media throwing otter under thus bus was bs. He started off saying right thing saying anytime you pull goalienfirst reason isnto try and provide a spark, but then to go off on how otter has a large sample size of losing vs the oilers----- wtf? Unnecessary. All you had to do was say spark and that desmith has been great for the club too and that you have 2 goalies you trust. No reason to trash otter like that

I think the biggest issue here is how he pulled him. Deboer (or one of the assistants) should have told Ott he was making the change when he first skated to the bench for the timeout. That’s the normal, accepted way to do it. He obviously didn’t because Ott had started skating back to the net after the timeout ended. By waiting until the timeout was over and Ott was skating back to the net it drew even more attention to him.

It looks like Deboer’s intention was to embarrass him. That’s not going to fly with Ott nor anybody else on that club. If he could throw one guy under the bus he could throw any of them under the bus. Dallas played most of this series lifeless and looking like they’d tuned the coach out. Only a few players looked like they had a pulse. If Deboer hadn’t lost that room before tonight that stunt surely did it.
I think his postgame press conference comments pretty much confirm he was trying to embarrass ott
