According to Dhaliwal this morning on Sportsnet 650

Carolina brought up Demko as being part of trade for Pettersson. Canucks declined. Not sure if that was the snag, but eventually Carolina chose the Rantanen trade over any Pettersson trade.

Now that Canucks have signed Lankinen to a long term deal, this might mean Demko will be available for trade. Highly unlikely it would be for this season, but will Carolina circle back and make an offer at the draft or off-season?

Demko has battled a rare injury in his Popleteus that has caused him to miss the first half of the season. He just started to regain his elite form over the last handful of games posting a .969, 1.000, .971 which included a shutout over the Avalanche. He then had to leave the game vs the Maple Leafs and is not expected to play or practice for at least another 2 weeks. report is soft tissue injury.

I personally think the Canucks will ride with a 1A-1b combo of Demo and Lankinen next season, however, if they made Demko available in the summer, it might be a smart buy low move with a possible massive payoff for any team, especially if Demko plays next year in Vezina form after getting a full off-season to train and recover.

His AAV is 5mil and it expires next year. just turned 29 yr old.

What would a return be from Carolina? Demko can still raise his value with solid play the rest of the season and playoffs if he gets the chance.

The most recent injury with Demko, being soft tissue is expected from a goalie who didnt train all summer. That along with back spasms which he dealt with as well..

The fact that its not the same knee that injured his Polpetues is very good news for Demko.

These other injuries are fixable and preventable in the future.

I think a team will be very happy with Demko if they traded for him for next year. The gamble is the year after if a team has to give him term when he is a UFA. but by then he may have put all the injury woes behind him.

When healthy and on form, he is a Vezina candidate in his sleep. So good.

If Demko was a target that someone like Carolina would legitimately want, I feel like the Canucks would be keeping him themselves and they wouldn't have given Lankinen that deal.

They're better off just holding onto him and seeing if he can get healthy. I can't see any way that a contending team would trade for him now with his issues.

The play here is obvious to me now.

1. Get Tristan Jarry retained to a decent number for free. Maybe for Jiri Patera. Either way Pittsburgh saves money on a buyout.

2. Send Demko to Robidas island to heal until the draft.

3. Keep Silovs and run a Lankinen - Jarry - Silovs combo until the playoffs since 2 of 3 have passed waivers anyways.

4. Jarry bounces back playing in a new enviroment (home) and unburdened with his contract.

5. Trade Demko with one year remaining to the highest bidder on day 2 of the draft.

6. Trade Silovs with one year remaining at 850k to the highest bidder on day 2 of the draft.

7. Sign next years Lankinen on July 1. One of the many available goalies all the Lankinen deal haters keep saying will obviously be available and cheaper.

You cant just send Demko to Robidas island unless he trully has a significant injury which it doesnt sound like it is. He is supposed to practice with the team after the Canucks return on their road trip.

Demko isnt going to sign off on being on ltir the rest of the season especially when he is essentially trying to showcase for a new contract.

Hey now, if the Canes can’t sign Rantanen let’s get Pettersson back on the table too, salary cap be damned.

Let’s do amother 3 way blockbuster:

Pettersson and Demko to CAR

Rantanen to somewheres

Rantanen return ++++ from CAR to VAN,

Sounds completely doable…amirite?

Yeah I think Demko is gone this offseason to Carolina.

That would be a fantastic calculated move for Carolina in my opinion.

Low Risk-High Reward as Demko would be on an expiring contract.

If Demko, gets a full-off seaon of training and plays to his calibre, It would be a massive win for Carolina and a perfect fit for Demko playing in front of that D core.

I dont even know the severity of the "recent" injury or setback or sun rising in the morning with Demko and its all a little tounge in cheek.

But also, like the Ilya moaning we did yesterday for pages upon pages, WHO CARES WHAT ILYA OR THATCHER WANT?!?

Thats the point of Robidas island. The Joffrey Lupul's aint supposed to like it. Maybe Francois Beauchemin was healthy the whole time I dont care.

The day Van pulls some Vegas cutthroat stuff is the day Canuck fans lose their collective minds, while screaming for us to be more like these other teams.

Demko, when healthy, is a top 3-5 goalie in the league. He's just had rotten luck with injuries. If the Canucks trade him, he should go to the eastern conference. Honestly, Buffalo and Carolina are the two teams that I would think who should have interest. I see a better fit with Buffalo instead of Carolina though.

Kochetkov is actually 12th in the entire NHL in GSAx, with a full starters workload…ahead of Markstrom, Ullmark, Vejmelka, Wolf, Kuemper, Oettinger, Montembault, Sorokin etc.

I get wanting to pair him with a *healthy* veteran 1A/1B - but there’s certainly no reason for the Canes to risk much of consequence on Demko given the health situation.

I do wonder if Carolina might revisit Pettersson amid the they-might-trade-Rantanen-again speculation.

They could target another playoff team for Rantanen that has players that Vancouver could covet.

But I suspect the whole league has simply soured on Pettersson too much to go for him in the middle of a down season.

Could see that as well, but think the cap might be problematic for an in season swap now to work. Athe draft and before Pettersson’s trade protection kicks in, no issues, now, they don’t have Necas ($6.5M) + Kotkaniemi ($4.8M) + ? to offer for Pettersson ($11.6M). The exchanged salaries offset one another basically. They also have Hall’s full $6M now that they didn’t have on the books prior to the Rantanen trade.

Also, what would they trade now for Pettersson? Do the Canucks want the Rantanen headache? Without Necas as a centerpiece, it comes down to futures basically and the Canes cant afford to deal Nikishin.

Seems like it’d be a very complicated transaction now. Personally, I think the Canes should have traded Necas + for Pettersson to begin with, but that ship has sailed.

Would be dumb to trade Demko for cents in the dollar this year or this offseason, unless he has a massive push to finish the year and his value goes back up. With Lankinen in the fold they can hope for the best going into next year and make a decision then. If he’s back in form you either try to keep him or potentially move him at the deadline

I was thinking the Carolina dream is dead but now im wondering how much better Svechnikov is than Necas if Carolina wanted to get crazy.

Probably enough to offset the rumored picks/prospects add..

Probably enough to even require an add from Vancouver's end..

Pettersson and Hoglander
For
Svechnikov and Kotkaniemi

Salaries are a wash today. Kotka can win draws. Svech becomes the Canucks golden boy.

Carolina get a 3 headed monster. Maybe Aho wasnt the chemistry fit for Rantanen but EP40 could be.

(Yes, Canucks would have Chytil-Kotka-Suter depth and would immedietly need to go center shopping)

you willingly offered to take Jarry, this is a binding contract.

Ideally he will be a Canuck July 1st for 775k after Pittsburgh buys him out.

Maybe im alone but at half retained, for free and dumping Patera's 775k for next year we could do alot worse as a #3 even if you think hes worthless today.

Id never even look at Jarry if Demko wasnt broken though.
