GDT: Devils vs Rangers 12:30 ABC

The first period is irrelevant to your point of score effects since like I said in game they got worse as the game dragged on with their actual play.

The issue is this team has a massive issue going all turtle mode with the lead that has cost them games against really shitty teams that are not the Canes, who some here think we will beat because we put up 4 against a bad Rangers team who still out played them 5 on 5 after the first period before we ever scored a goal.

I think most posters will just be happy to make the playoffs. As far as Carolina goes - yea I'm inclined to think they'll beat us. They are a machine.

But i wouldn't shit on today's game. Yea - the Rangers are not good this year. But they are a divisional rivalry and always tough to play against (except; that Christmas time game). Anything can happen when these two teams meet.

it’s nice to be on the side where you capitalize on all your chances and your goalie makes some elite saves to shut them down because it always feels like we’re on the other end of that.

i take back all my shitting on markstrom, turned out to be the right move playing him back into form, he’s playing well enough to steal a series against an offensively challenged team like carolina

Not to be that guy, but they didn't capitalize on all of their chances :P

The Canes are the “deserve to win o’meter” champions.

If our PP can finally solve their PK, we have a shot. Don’t care if they fling 40 shots from blue line on every game.

The Canes play very well as a team, but have few game breaking talents. If Markstrom plays well and we win the special teams battle we totally have a chance.

I’m not betting on it, of course - but if we get big game markstrom anything can happen (that’s why you trade for him and get him back on point after injury)

Just making the playoffs wasn’t the goal this year. Our GM obviously shit the bed badly in the off season and even more so throughout the season and cemented his failure at the TDL not making the team better.

It does look like a blowout but Marky made some massive saves throughout the game. We did have a bunch of bad breakdowns but he was there to clean it up, it shouldn’t go unnoticed. The game could have easily swung the other way or at least look a bit dicey.

It was actually a kind of Martyish game from him, not a ton of shots by any means but when we broke down he was there but made it look routine.

They’ve gotten terrific goaltending and have played some of the best D in the league all year. Fitz didn’t do well enough with forward depth, but a lot of that is Haula (and Mercer to some extent) really regressing.

The team was absolutely made better at the deadline. Two solid pieces and even Sprong has looked pretty good.

Since the carolina matchup is being talked about, this is my thoughts.

I think there's some serious overrating of them going on. With Jack, I wouldn't really even be worried. Without him, it will be close for sure.

Couple issues that caused them the loss the last time they met

1. shitty goaltending. Carolina consistently struggles to score in the playoffs, yet they suddenly became all starts against the devils.
2. devils inability to play a defensive game and grind it out type of game
3. shitty coach

2 of these issues have largely been fixed this season (actually all 3 have been fixed, but one of them is the x factor). Carolina most likely will still have mediocre goaltending in the playoffs, same with the goal scoring. If Markstrom plays at elite level, they can win.

For the record, I'm not confident they will win but I seriously don't think they will get blown out.

They drafted tenth last year. They finished with 81 points. Maybe they get to 95 this season. That’s a big turnaround. Every team’s goal is to win the Cup every year. In reality NJ’s improvement was a realistic outcome. They were down Jack and Hamilton and Markstrom at one point. Not many teams could overcome that. They rallied and are better now than at any point since Christmas. Give credit where it’s due. Expecting perfection is setting yourself up for disappointment. This is when it matters. Meier is scoring. Nico and Bratt are playing well. Markstrom is rounding back into form. Doumolin is settling in. The Canes are a great team and likely win but it won’t be because the Devils suck or are terrible. That’s just hyperbole. If Markstrom steals a game or two who knows. I’ll say this, the Canes won’t want to fight NJ this playoff. Dillon Cotter Kovacevic and even Noesen give NJ some edge compared to last time. If the NJ players can play with some confidence and push back and Markstrom can steal a game maybe it’s closer than we think. The Canes aren’t a better team now than they were before the TDL. Maybe they have some goaltending failure or someone gets hurt on their roster. Let it play out. For today I’ll just say the numbers seem sketchy to me. The Devils were originally credited with 9 shots at the end of the first and then somehow 2 disappear. The Rangers opened the second period with a bit of sustained pressure but NJ bounced back as the period went along. Once they took the two goal lead it was over. I agree the turtling is a bad strategy. It’s like the prevent defense in football. It tends to prevent you from winning. Hopefully they address that.

The biggest issue is the hole on the 3rd pairing

Casey Nemec Cho aint it

A Douglas return would be huge

He is going to lead the team out of the tunnel the first game in Carolina and he is going to have a big game 3 in NJ and the momentum will make a difference. Hamilton may be a goofball but you know he wants to beat Carolina.

It's crazy how much he's fallen. He's completely toast this season.
