Major difference being that the Mets were supposed to be a world series favorite and collapsed. Even if reality smacks the Devils in the face, making the playoffs with this group would still be seen as a step forward for the franchise.
True but considering that it wasn't THAT long ago (as in "we can still remember") the Devils lost in the 1st round to the Tampa Bay Dirtbags, I'd like to at least get to the 2nd round before calling this season a total success.

Still a looooong way to go.

We need to chill.

It was a painful 3rd and awful OT.

BUT - we were down 2-0 early in the game and managed to get a point.

Boston lost to Ottawa and Anaheim took them to a shootout. Dallas lost to Ottawa. Nashville beat the Islanders. Things happen.
Would be nice if they can beat them tonight (in regulation).

But knowing how things go, they'll lose.

Honestly, no thanks. They were getting stuck in the d-zone a lot more than I liked when he was on the ice. I think I'm fine with him being sheltered and used on pp for now.

Hopefully they figure out how to counter it effectively too, or they will be losing more games as more teams will be noticing the trend in the games where devils lose.
We can handle it just fine. It’s nothing new. Calgary and Washington played us that way and we would have been fine last night too except for spotting them a 2 goal lead on plays 11 seconds into the game and with 43 seconds left in the first period - when your system and awareness should be good enough not to allow that shit to happen.

Plus we can and should finish our chances better. Idk why we kept getting so deep on Saros and going glove side on him when there were other options. Nico had the puck roll on him; Mercer should have maybe lifted it better; Jack was very deep when he got his look. But shoot earlier and higher is the lesson. I think Tatar had a couple looks too. Plus if Severson and Bratt too would get their looks on net a little more often instead of firing these cannon shots high and wide. Hit the net. For Damon above all it’s been an issue his whole career.

I don’t base this season’s success on what happens on this year’s playoffs at all. Not even a little.

I know it’s a thing fixate on THE CUP but this team having a great foundational year as truly good team is way way way more important to me.

There are plenty of examples of not very good winning a series, or even a couple, in a fluky Cinderella runs which make their owners extra millions while being loads of fun for fans.

If the team goes back to their same old mediocrity though it didn’t really mean anything other than some nice memories.

Considering that recently the Canucks made it the 2020 WCF and the Habs made to the SCF and they both got so bad afterwards that everyone was fired, it’s safe to say that one playoff run doesn’t tell us much of anything.

That’s why I fell a little in love with Fitz when he said he wasn’t interested in playoff rentals.

The dumb move would be to waste real assets on those instead of focusing on spend on additions we actually keep long term.

Hold the phone there.

Who the hell said anything about winning the CUP this year? :whaaa?:

I said "winning a playoff ROUND" would be considered a total success to me.

I am not going to be happy if we just made it to the playoffs and were just one-and done.

We already got to that point in 2018 with Hall.

Nico and, to a lesser extent, Bratt already experienced the "happy to be there" vibes of the playoffs.

Now I want the 2nd round (at least) this time (should they make it to the playoffs).

You know....PROGRESS? :teach2:

Otherwise, we'd be just repeating the same outcome and would make this year feel like a damn waste.

I meant the “The Cup” as in “the playoffs are what only matter and the regular season results don’t mean anything” sort of thinking.

Why else would winning one playoff round mean the difference between a successful season and not one?

That’s the argument you’re making. I’m arguing the difference between 2017-18 and now is that team wasn’t actually particularly good and it led to zero continued success. The lack of success was so glaring that everyone got fired and lots of players got traded soon after that season.

I want this to be the point when the Devils turn into a an actual Playoff Team, aka a team that repeatedly makes the playoffs, even in years when they face some adversity. That’s when you know you’re a contender.

That’s different than a team that happens to randomly sneak into the playoffs because a lot of things really went well and/or even happens to win a series or two when they do.
