Agree bad deal Verbeek fleeced him
On some level it sounds like NJ gave up thee dimes for a quarter. An overpayment but ultimately who cares. In five years we can look back and see what Traff and the pick are doing. Not my idea of a good trade but "fleeced" is a pretty strong adjective. If NJ makes the playoffs this season it will have been worth it. As others have noted you cannot pull the rug out from under the remaining players. If the cost of the good will is a low second and Traff not ideal but whatever.

I remember being interested in Dumoulin last year but his numbers were pretty bad. If he has anything left in the tank then this is a decent move.

I know that value isn't real but I always feel like Fitz ends up bidding against himself and pays more than he needs to. I appreciate the "I don't care about price, just get me the guy I need" mentality but I really don't think a 2nd or 3rd tier rental should be going for this much. Even if we have the surplus picks to not really care.
He was 6/10/16 +3 on a shit defensive team. He's a defensive D-man who at best is -25 ppg. He has basically been just that during his career. He's not an offensive D-man. He is coming to help hold down the fort.

Good trade to sure up the D.

This draft is weak and it's a sellers market.

We're in the playoffs and we should go for it.
The playoff experience and revenue alone make up for the pick and prospect.

Honestly if they did this deal 'last week' it probably doesn't get half the reaction it does, but throw a few more losses in the mix plus Jack being out for the year and Dougie being out at least till the stretch drive adding to Siegs already on the shelf just reeks of throwing good money to rack up bad debts, or whatever that phrase is and being the beginning of a desperation ploy for Fitz to save his ass.
No, no, no. Timing doesn’t matter, this is bad asset management anyway you slice it. The pick or the player for a 33yo rental would’ve been over payment, so both is woof.

This stinks of desperation from TF.

The McDermid trade itself was meh, whatever...it's the actual signing of him to a three-year deal after that which was insanity. Dude has played like 120 minutes total this year, in about a third of the games we've played.
Another trade where he gave up a pick and a player who has bottom 6/lower 9 potential, where most likely a pick would’ve sufficed. The 3 year contract just compounded the stupidity.

The point is the guy stinks at drafting forwards and then trades the few that they have, little value/upside or not.

we can build this thing together....

Not going to defend the trade, but the reaction here for a late second and a maybe prospect is chef's kiss HF. Two things I'm curious to see. First, what else does or does not happen before the TDL? Second, comparables - did Fitz really overpay or is this simply the market a day before the TDL?

The org clearly doesnt like Hatakka. We dont know if he is any good at the NHL level
In the games we have seen him play in Utica over the course of 2 seasons, he has not stood out as a true NHL possibility. Nobody in this city said, "He won't be here long. He needs to be in the NHL." Nemec and Casey are the only 2 D-man since NJ arrived here 4 seasons ago to get people talking about NHL possibilities.

Zetterlund was a throw in too be nice on our third line this season no?....Picks aren't useless either they are assets that should be used wisely...Traff plays a pro game and for retention when we don't need it or a rental was an overpayment....If he wanted retention to make another deal that is kinda of scary if he is really is in save his job mode....Keep in mind I like Dumolin as a player but overpayment is overpayment

Traff is not a nothing prospect. I got on someone for not understanding what 27% means the other day, and yes, Traff is not a long-term NHLer most of the time. But sometimes he is, and he's had a good D+1, and his game is what this team is missing. I don't understand how he got included in this trade.

The winger prospects I'd rate over him are Gritsyuk (who is barely a prospect at his age) and Hameenaho, and he's probably on par with Squires.

Trade them one of our thousand defensive picks.

Fitz has drafted mostly garbage at forward and loves bleeding out what little depth we have there.

Loves overpaying too.

Sure, but the issue with NJ isn't another third liner unless that guy is a center. Zetterlund is a nice player. I do wish he was here but I don't think the team is in any different a position if he was. As I see it, the problem is lack of center depth. If they had a couple of decent to good center prospects the season would not seem nearly as dire. Heck, if they had drafted Lundell over Holtz they'd probably be in decent shape. I don't disagree with your premise but I presume Fitz had to trump another offer on Doumulin and they were stuck with needing a lefty defender. Injuries really crippled them here.

I hope to god Traff is another Zetterlund while we get to watch Max Graham struggle in the ECHL and Kasper Pikkarainen turn into another Pytlik.

And Brian f***ing Dumoulin isn’t going to get us into the playoffs unless he’s scoring some goals.

A shit rental for a now shit season and typical Fitz overpayment/terrible asset management.

Can’t wait to see him hyperventilating over this in an interview.

He’s allergic to drafting and/or acquiring offensive talent.

f*** Fitz.

Huh. Doumulin does have 2 Cups to his name.

Relax. I'm not saying this is great. But as a D-man he is technically a need.
Plus we added a prospect with some upside yesterday. If we make the playoffs or not, we couldn’t just play two rookies on the backline for the rest of the season. Pickups at this time of the year are always going to be an overpayment.

I expect by the time Traff develops Fitz will be long gone. I tend to agree with you on this but getting worked up about it isn't changing anything. Hopefully it works out. Why Fitz can't draft any good offensive players I have no idea. Aren't a decent number of the scouts the same ones that picked guys like Bratt and Shara etc?

Is Fitz allergic to f***ing centers?

He is on draft day.

Center is the toughest position to fill via trade and UFA, that’s why you should actually draft some.

Teams are resigning their depth centers or likely asking a king’s ransom for them.

Let’s just say my expectations on Fitz fixing our center issue are non-existent.

Don’t worry, next year he’ll ovecorrect and draft five or six big boys who can win faceoffs but have next to no offensive talent
