Confirmed with Link: Devils trade 2nd rounder and Herman Traff for Brian Doumilin

Just what we need. Another slow, aging, defensive defenseman. I knew we would go that route as soon as Siegs got injured.

I forgot all about this guy. He was quite the player when the Pens won those back to back cups.

Can't wait for giving up a prospect like Traff to come back and bite us in the ass when he turns out to be a great player for another team all for an UFA defenseman and this team to miss the playoffs. fvcking hell.

Or, just as possible, he becomes nothing. I don't like the cost we paid, but recognize it's part of the current deadline market and the team is trying to stay competitive and hold their playoff position. It is what it is.

he’s not going to be a great player. he’s gonna be a 4th liner who scores his like 3rd goal of the season in game 40 against us, in highlight reel fashion in the third period of a tie game

We aren't winning anything without our best defensive Dman and our best player in Hughes. Maybe, maybe we get lucky and win a round off of good goaltending but that is it.

And we are still missing at least 3 good forwards to be a team that can do anything noteworthy.

Fitz needs to go - have had enough of garbage old school trades/signings/bad drafting. Also more nepotism please - lets bring in more of our scouts kids or draft crappy players in the first round (Stillman) whose fathers were NHLers.

I will say it again - Fitz needs to go.
i understand your frustration, but the devils making the playoffs was seemingly the goal this year. we have to establish ourselves as a perennial regular season winner and expect that of ourselves every year.

if we make the playoffs and are playing meaningful hockey in the spring, even if we “luck” into winning a round, that’s better for the culture of our team than a 2nd round pick and a Prospect who’s probably not top 10 in our pool.

I don't think Fitz is on a hot seat. It's not the style of these owners who seem to want more of a team consensus approach on things. The team was comfortably in a playoff position when Jack went down. I don't think ownership is going to can Fitz if they believe the injuries doom them (let's not forget Siegs and Hamilton are out as well). I don't love the trade price but it is what it is. The tweet saying the second if the higher of EDM/WPG sort of suggests they can only now trade the lower of them. Sort of a weird trade condition that hamstrings the other second.
I think ownership is focused on the Commanders and Sixers, and if the Devils miss the playoffs will simply fire Fitz. Just kind of how organizations operate, failure = heads roll, even if Fitz is mostly there to facilitate a decision making process among multiple parties (hypothetically...we really don't know how it works).

The fact that he targeted a former Pen from when he was in the Pitt organizaton...just makes it seem like he's got some sway here and is worried, but this is some advanced kremlinology.

He looked good in the world juniors this year so who knows.

Sounds about right for this teams luck lately lol

The other thing I forgot about is that we can't trade our 2nd or our 3rd this year because the conditions on the Allen trade for last year haven't been resolved. So this pick has to be one of EDM's or WIN's

the story we get on how they operate suggests to me that Fitz washes everything through multiple layers. If they fire Fitz they sort of have to can a bunch of folks I'd think. That's expensive. We will see.

I think if it got really sticky, the Devils could work out a resolution since Montreal knows the condition won’t be met. Toss them a 2028 7th to remove the condition and make it a straight 3rd.

I wonder about that, obviously it is still mathematically possible that Allen could play 40+ games and the Devils make the playoffs, but functionally it is impossible. That said, it is sort of funny that if Markstrom hadn't gotten hurt, that 2nd round pick is probably available for trade.

@StevenToddIves Thoughts on Traff? I see his production overseas is nothing eye popping but I will admit I don’t know what the expected production rate is for that league for prospects
Production rate only tells a part of the story, but Traff is certainly a legit NHL prospect. He combines a good shot and decent skating with size and the willingness to use it. Consistency has been an issue and it's worth questioning if he's got the hockey sense to be a top 6 guy at the higher levels, but I can certainly see a bottom 6 banger with some scoring pop.

This is the issue with trying to be buyers with extremely slim chances on doing any damage in the playoffs.

Fitz will trade away the future of the team for bs like this. Sounds familiar... looking at you Lou
Meier's gonna blossom as the focus of the offense....at least that's what I'm telling myself.

There is no way the organization can make any move without it hurting.

We don't have much in terms of assets so anything we spend is going to be too much.

It's very simple. You either sit idle and watch the season go down the drain or you try to salvage it with what little you have...

Either scenario the pitch forks would be out...."paid too much" or "sat on his hands"....pick your bitch adventure.

You think the only two options for fitz were "sit on your hands" or "trade a 2nd round pick and a recent 3rd round draft choice for 20 games of a 34 year old defenseman"?

I love the draft, but it is just a late 2nd round pick (in a weak draft that reputedly gets sketchy by the mid-first round) and a C tier prospect.

Jeff Marek and Brian Burke were talking recently about how each home game is like 1.5 million in revenue in the owner's pocket. So there is some pressure to at least qualify for the playoffs. I get why most fans have the mentality that it's Cup or bust, but there is some value in making the postseason. Some were still hung up on giving up Yegor Rykov and a 2nd rounder for Michael Grabner, but I don't think anybody with the team lost sleep over that one. Even if we got bounced in the first round after barely qualifying, the owner got a couple home games, and the general fan base was optimistic about the following season.

Once again, you all know this is clearly not going to be Fitz’s only move, right?

They’re in a playoff spot right now. The team has made the playoffs twice in 13 years. At a certain point, they just need to make the f***ing playoffs and stop worrying about the future, especially when it’s a draft pick that’s is likely never going to develop into an NHLer anyway.

At this point basically yes, cause Fitz hibernated too long

I think that was probably one of the very few LHD available that can play 20 minutes and kill penalties if not the only one in a relatively low price range

Anyway you slice it, this is a dumb trade. A 2nd and a FWD prospect just drafted and with some potential from an already barren prospect pool for an ok 33yo dman. Don’t want to hear any “seller’s market” crap nor “price for retention. Don’t trade with Verbeek, they guy wants to dummy GMs and well, he found a dummy. More proof that TF has no idea how to get value in trades.

Not sure if this is worse than the McPunchy trade.

I’m officially done for the year.

You moron, you f***ing can’t draft forwards for shit, moron.

Another second to the wind. What do you say @Guttersniped ?
