The vibe sense this season compared to last is like night and day. Even early on last season, things felt off. It felt like they played with an air of entitlement, a sense of "we have the talent to take it back in any game." I know the goaltending was hot ass, but that was only part of the story, because it was half of the negative feedback loop. Once they couldn't play with any confidence that they could hold on, things went south.

Now, they're playing with a sense of purpose and plenty of confidence. They're a team, not just a collection of talent. The physicality helps a lot, but so does keeping it simple on defense.
They need a better 4th line to take on more minutes. Mac shouldn't be playing this many games. I'm fine with Palat and he can move up and down the lineup for injuries. It's their center that needs to be replaced. Dowling needs to be sent back down. Try Bowers or make a trade. Try bringing up Foote too?

I definitely didn't think all of Fitz additions would pay dividends to this extent

The only offseason acquisition that I’m not absolutely thrilled with is Tatar, and even he has been decent in the right situations.

Pesce, Dillon, Cotter, Noesen, and Kovacevic have all been incredible. Markstrom has occasional inconsistency, but he’s a legit goalie who brings stability we haven’t had in net for years.

I wouldn't say Pesce or Dillon have been incredible.

Steady and as expected, yes. Incredible, no.

So 20 games in the books.

12-6-2 with 26 points. Good for a .650 point percentage. +20 GD.

How we feeling?

Standings obviously tough to judge because we played so many more games but we are 1st in the conference right now
I like it because this team is obviously trending in the right direction, even with that SJ game. Its funny, someone posted that last year through 19 we were 9-9-1 and this year 11-6-2 and I was like man that doesnt feel like alot better on paper but holy hell what a different team this is in vibe. I really feel as though were only scratching the surface.

The fact we’re trending in the right direction is the biggest thing right now. This has been a really tough schedule in terms of games played early on. It takes its toll especially when you’ve got new players you’re integrating and a brand new coach and system to boot.

I’m feeling great. Back to back road wins against the defending champs is incredible. And it wasn’t like the Panthers were going 50% either. We beat them and frustrated them. Stood up to their physicality and took it to them as well.

This team has the potential to be a problem. Keefe has the entire group buying in and working hard all over the ice. We’ve seen growing pains of course but the team is defending better and better each game.

the buy in is extremely impressive for a team where the longest standing member on the ice is 25 years old in Nico.

The problem with that is assets.

NJD has a long window.

We have now shipped out significant assets for Cotter, Markstrom, and Meier. Buying another couple rentals and then paying to ship out Palat leaves the cupboard pretty barren.

To ignore that we still need to figure out how to build a team for the next decade+ with Jack would be silly.

I don't think that, going into the playoffs, having Nemec in the lineup instead of Kovacevic is a meaningful downgrade, if a downgrade at all.

Kovacevic has been FANTASTIC so far. But we've already GOTTEN that production. If we trade him away at the deadline we still keep all the wins he helped us get. It is about going forward. And getting Nemec in the lineup+more assets likely helps NJD in the playoff run and beyond.

You know it’s November, right? We play our 64th game on March 7th, TDL isn’t close.

Injuries happen, we don’t know in what shape our defense, or Nemec, will be in several months.

And “buying another couple rentals and then paying to ship out Palat”? Meier wasn’t a rental. We’re, at worst, getting two years of Markstrom and Cotter.

And I don’t see Fitz spending much on UFA rentals, I’ll be pretty unhappy if he does and trading Kovy won’t make me feel better.

I also believe paying someone to take Palat is a pipe dream that will definitely not happen.

What …. They have been a godsend. It’s no surprise we have one of the best PK now in the NHL and once we get a lead we hold it!?

Pesce defensively has been as elite as they come and Dillon has been a steady partner for Dougie, not to mention all the team stuff he does.

They have been f***ing incredible, literally barely put a foot wrong

Hard not to feel pretty good after the game last night, and the win the other day. Team is fast and tough, and they are finally getting some solid goalie play again. We're more than likely a top two or three team in the division, and we are now better built to compete against really good teams. Just have to stay healthy and we will have a legit shot.

My feels right now: “Meh”

Why?

There are a few games that they let slip away. The Flames last minuet melt down and The Sharks game stand out. (As does the 4 game losing streak.🤫)

14-4-2 vs 12-6-2. If they found a way to win those games.

Most definitely a 0 on the Dano meter (0 in Nico-meters as well!)

As for the deadline talk, I feel like this discourse is missing the plot. As others have mentioned, if we’re in the position we’re currently in by the deadline, the only moves you’ll see will be to shore up depth at forward with draft capital. It is very unlikely that Fitz flips or sells anyone off if we’re buyers. It hasn’t been his nature, and he’s made the point before that the deadline doesn’t necessarily offer magic solutions in the short term. He recognizes it’s challenging for players and the team in general. He’s made only a couple exceptions and it was because they were intended to be long term commitments in Timo and Allen.

He is not going to torpedo the locker room when the team is playing well. Siegs and Kovacevic have been one of the best defensive pairings in all of hockey for the first 20 games. Palat has been a part of Jack and Bratt going on hot streaks. You can argue they would have anyway (I’m sure they would have), but they both speak highly about what he brings to their line and the locker room.

All that said, it’s way too early to have these discussions especially when the team is playing as well as they are. It’s a long season, people can go on cold streaks or get hurt. We don’t know exactly what’s around the corner. But you don’t mess with what’s working, you try to fortify it further.

Two games where they clearly didn’t have their legs, yet the game never got away from them. They didn’t give up much in either game and were a goal away for most of both.

The process is there, they’ve looked really strong 5-on-5, PK, and PP. To pull out two outlier games (that weren’t even bad outliers) out of the last few weeks of the season is looking for things to complain about.

Looking way far down the line but just my thoughts on what the team could use at the deadline:

Second line scoring winger (Tarasenko-type)
Bottom-six center (Lazar insurance)
Veteran depth LD (could be Hatakka)

You also have to consider we’re likely getting Gritsyuk after the KHL season. He’s going to be a nice scoring forward to have in our back pocket.

If you don't trust your 2nd overall pick to play on your teams 3rd pairing going into the playoffs after he already has basically a full NHL season under his belt idk what to say.

Now, NHL gms have to answer to owners who will question the risk of trading away a currently productive player, so I understand WHY fitz won't move Kovacevic.

But we as fans do not, and if you think NJD SHOULDN'T, if it fills other holes elsewhere, trust Nemec to fill that role, then that's a disappointing outcome.

I do however understand that, in terms of fans, this is primarily just an overreaction to 20 games of the shiny new toy in Kovacevic. (eg, people who think we should clear out 1 or both of Hamilton or Nemec to accommodate a long term contract for Kovacevic)
You say he’s 20 and has to learn a new system and he’s stuck behind three veterans. He probably can play a third pair role but right now you have three more experienced guys ahead of him who can also. He was the youngest defender in the league earlier this season. He’s still basically a kid.

I think they definitely found their legs halfway through game 1, Florida just looks really good regardless because they’re a damn good team.

The vibes are immaculate right now. They are playing with confidence. The defense is tighter. Of course, the goaltending is much better other than that four-game stretch where it looked like it was going to regress.

The five-day layoff is going to suck. These guys are fun to watch.

Agree with you here on not getting too much if we're in a similar position by trade deadline. More forward depth is probably all we need.

I'm a big believer in not disrupting a lot in team chemistry if the team is really rolling all season long as a top flight team, there is a reason why that is successful. You don't sell glue guys or guys just because they're on a 1 year, it really would have to not disrupt the team morale.

So the idea that Kovacevic would be a possible guy to move at the deadline, seems absurd to me, particularly as he is playing so well, and near top pairings for us.

Tatar in theory could be moved, but he IS a depth forward which may be needed in the stretch run, and we're looking to have forward depth, and he is most probably part of the team success morale, as teammates had said he is a really good guy in the locker-room, the core was thrilled to have him back.

You can maybe upgrade Bastian (would be sad), but who would be looking for him, he would be a throw-in in a deal only. There is no one else to give - Haula is a glue guy, except for some prospects Lenni, Gritsyuk or blue-chips (Nemo/Casey)....but that would be INSANE on the blue-chips for rental material.

I don't think we want to give up more picks to get players, as you said we would need to fill the draft capital back at some point soon, since the last few years (Meier trade, etc).

It will be a challenging TD decision point for the GM, if we are in a similar position we are today.

It’s a bummer the layoff may coming as the team has a good rhythm.

On the other hand, I bet Keefe has a long list of things the team has learned but isn’t doing totally correct, things Keefe hasn’t gotten to yet, and things that need changing now that he’s seen his system in action with this team. So Keefe will finally get to check some items off those lists.

Is it really a weird thing to say? Given his scoring history, you don't find it statistically odd that he has zero points in 11 games?
Because he's not here to score points when you have Dougie Hamilton and Luke Hughes.

Plenty of defensemen go through pointless stretches while playing solid hockey.
