Slightly annoyed/concerned with the Nemec treatment right now. Hopefully he's sent down or inserted in the lineup after the Western Canada trip.

Really wonder where Nemec's headspace is at right now...
His headspace should be oh f*** I'm going to be sent down once we get back from our road trip and I need to be much much better and round out my game. Furthermore I'm super young and being picked 2nd overall guarantees nothing.

I think he's been really over rated for his draft position and a ton of rose colored glassed have been applied to his play last year. He has a looooong way to go which is fine, it's not his fault, he's a baby.

So, you're saying that these stats are unquestionable. Irrefutable proof of bad goaltending.

Regardless of injuries and free agency losses sidelining multiple members of our D corp effectively taking two thirds of them off of the ice to be replaced with rookies and plugs, last year, you are of the steadfast belief that Vitek Vanacek was truly a top five goalie one year, (?!?!?) and the worst in the league the next and that was wholly his fault.

No wiggle room for impacts of the team in front of him?

If your answer is no, then please point me to the accurate representation of these effects in your stats.

you have so much blind faith in the way that High Danger Chances are defined that you can see no room for improving them, so that they actually take into account the causality of goals, and that's your take?

Did it ever cross your mind that there's probably a better representation of hockey reality being developed than what you hold up as gospel?

no, I am not saying advanced stats are unquestionable. But when multiple different outlets have very similar numbers, why would I believe the "my eyes" guy over what the numbers are telling me? when literally all the numbers are saying one thing and your eyes are saying another, maybe, just maybe you are the one that is wrong?

It is impossible for you to watch every team in the league. The numbers are there for you to be able to (somewhat) compare teams.

the TEAM DEFENSE this year is night and day from last year. It isn't really even a question IMO. Aside from maybe 3 games, the goaltending has sucked ass. Again. And the numbers bear that out.

Hope the results can start coming in with consistency.

I'm confident because I trust the offense, and so far, I'm happy with the defense. I see way more structure, I see way less odd-man rushes and missed assignments, and don't get the same pond hockey vibe from last year.

Mistakes will happen. Hockey is a game of mistakes, every team makes mistakes and most goals score in the league are a result of mistakes. That's the game. But seeing a way more structured and way less hectic defense feels encouraging. Truly feels very different from last year.

And even if this year isn't THE year, I feel like Keefe can build something with this group with the positives I'm seeing right now. I'm seeing small things that are encouraging and can make a difference. I'm seeing smarter decisions with the puck, I'm seeing smart dump ins in certain situations, I'm seeing harder backchecking and forechecking, all things that weren't always present before.

Overall, I'm encouraged by what the team is showing overall. Hopefully that keeps improving.
You're encouraged but you have that Avy still.

The defense played by our defensemen, with perhaps the exception of the bottom rookie pairing, has indeed been night and day from last year, giving up fewer good chances. I agree completely. We still have given up enough really terrific grade A chances and have had terrible coverage and checking from our forwards at times.. enough to cause us to lose games.

I don't really get how you can be so blind to the stats' shortcomings since goals are such a low frequency event, and high danger is so divorced from reality of what makes a shot difficult. Your point that 'different outlets' that all rely on the same garbage in are in agreement doesn't carry any weight.

I think last year's team defense was awful, And last year's goaltending was awful in sympathy as well as just being plain bad.

I've seen some garbage goals this year from our goalies, but does the weight that these graphs show really represent what is happening on this team?

If our team defense is better, and we only give up four hdca a game but they are unstoppable chances... Then what does your stat say? We are the worst team against hdca... 100% fail. If we give up 25 hdca and they are all just average chances and the goalie gets them all..

There's so many things that go into making a shot dangerous and I have no faith that the stat accurately captures the success or failure of a goaltender.

I get the desire to want to be able to compare goalies without watching games. I'd like to do that too. It's just not that easy.

I absolutely agree with the fact that that should be his attitude, and I believe that’s how he sees it as well. I wasn’t insinuating he should be in the lineup at any cost.

I don’t think he’s overrated at all however, I think he’ll be a great player for us and his play last year was awesome for a rookie. He definitely still has work to do though, as you said, he is super young.

I'm really not in the mood to argue Devils goaltending at the current moment. I've used so much energy on it and have used so many calories on it over the years.

But all I can say and ask is why again was Dave Rogalski brought back?
Are we seeing anything in Markstrom's game which makes us think goalie coach is the issue? Besides him currently having his best save % in 3 years.

It's still early and fluctuates up and down after a goalie (or any player) has only appeared in this few of games. But the numbers were really ugly just a week ago. And not so ugly a week before that.

Sure. It's always the goaltending. Doesn't matter who's the goalies are.

Couldn't be that the eye test is correct and when the forwards and/or D corps play a cohesive, responsible checking game and complete simple passes, we win and the goalie starts look great (a shutout, even!). and when we play like a minor league garbage hockey team, we lose and goalies suck.
Ah yes the old "stats don't agree with my preconceived opinion therefore the stats are useless and my eyes are better" argument. Hockey's version of "trust me bro".
