John MacLean is a very good example of this.

He sucked as an assistant for us for 7 years of whatever he was an assistant here for. Our power play was pathetic some of the years he was running it and never above average in any of those years. And he had guys like Niedermayer, Rafalski, Elias, I guess you could say Parise too, these are good power play guys.

Lou makes him the head coach (guess who was NEVER behind that and dead against that move from day one? I'm still taking a victory lap on that one) and he winds up being arguably the worst coach in the history of hockey. His buddy Kirk Muller hires him to be an assistant when he gets the head coaching gig in Carolina. He sits out unemployed from coaching for a few years (working on our broadcast crew) and it looks like it's gonna be for good until Rick Tocchet gets hired to be the head coach in Arizona and plucks him for his staff. Another BUDDY of his.

He don't even have to sit out an entire season before Sharks assistant coach Rocky Thompson has to step down because he had a medical exemption that didn't allow him to become vaccinated and John MacLean gets brought in with just about or week or two left before training camp starts. He played with the Sharks for less than an entire season. And the Sharks got to see just how good of a power play coach John MacLean was this year. I think when the new GM clears out Boughner, Johnny Mac will once again be unemployed.

I wonder if Lou will then hire him for Bridgeport?
Montreal hired St. Louis to be their head coach despite him having almost no coaching experience, just because of personal connections. The league loves to market itself as some league where opportunities are earned, but more often they are handed out to people they know.

I think we know why he got hired by Montreal of all teams though. They've handcuffed themselves by making it a prerequisite to speak French to be the head coach there, to the point that there's only so many candidates to choose from. That's why Claude Julien replaced Michel Therrien two different times in a 14 year span.

If he has sources saying Ruff is cooked then he is cooked. Rest is him speculating.

Yes, guys coaching in a lame duck year is very awkward and not all that common because you want to avoid that awkwardness.

The last year with with Torts in Columbus was weird as f*** and very bad (in results & vibes) and that was with a very famous star coach who had obvious job opportunities waiting for him after that.

Sure, we would have done better with actual healthy NHL starters and we’ll presumably do better next year with them (we’ll have them, right? RIGHT?!?!)

If Ruff is that coach when we do better next season, then what? He gets an extension if do better? If we make the playoffs? If we do shockingly better in the regular season & show life in the playoffs?

Either they have a sense he’s someone who will potentially stick with after next year (and according to the rumor that’s a “nope”) or they should call it. @Bleedred isn’t wrong when says it would most likely only lead to a very predictable mid-season firing. If he stays, I hope they at least hire a new ringer AC to replace him as an interim.

Hughes has had one NHL head coach and is signed for 8 years. Don’t care.

And Fitz should have learned from experience that keeping coaches to please players is dumb.

This came up with “Hall loves Hynes” and then Hall allegedly went to Buffalo because he liked Krueger in Edmonton during his 2012-13 half-season.

I realized then 1) Sometimes players might not be the best judge of NHL coaches 2) Hall’s other 4 Oiler HCs during his 6 years there must have been serial killers or something because Krueger was epically awful in every way in Buffalo.

Are there no French speaking coaches in any other league though?

Defending Ruff is a joke at this point. I'll check back in a couple of weeks and people will be defending Recchi next.
I would retain Ruff for next season. It isn't his fault that we have the league's worst goaltending, have had injuries to Hughes and a significantly weaker Hamilton.

It's not his fault, but he isn't helping either.

We have to fix goaltending, but there's a good chance if we bring him back, he's gonna have to go very early next year and Fitz looks like a f***ing jackass if he brings him back, only to have to fire him shortly into next season.

I was never impressed with this hiring to begin with though and Lindy Ruff has been one of my favorite coaches (sarcasm) for over 20 years now.

Just to fire him in December? Why? It's a complete waste of time to bring him back especially when the odds of him getting extended next offseason are slim to none.

Regardless of what happens with Ruff, there is absolutely no way Recchi can be back. His track record now across two teams is horrific.
The whole staff should be gone.

The organization should not keep Ruff, for example, just 'cause Jack likes him.

As Saugus stated, it's best to start fresh...and that means a *COMPLETE* overhaul.

No more half-assed ones where we keep assistants around.

They went out and drafted Jack’s brother what makes you think they wouldn’t keep his coach
dude...that's Jack's FLESH AND BLOOD.

There's a "slight" difference there.

C'mon now...your arms must be tired 'cause that's one hell of a REACH.

Fitz should not be in the business of letting players run the team and making Coaching decisions.

If he is, then HE should be replaced.

Both are examples of appeasing Jack
Yes, drafting the defenseman who was talented enough to score 17 goals as one of the youngest kids in NCAA and was the only freshmen nominated for a Hobey Baker was only about appeasing Jack Hughes. No other reason.

And Fitz is responsible for whether Ruff gets fired or not. Not sure how a comment about Hughes “liking Ruff” changes that.
