Thank you to our lord and savior Fitz. He has single handedly brought us to the playoffs with perfect roster management. We are not only a darkhorse but a serious cup contender with Meier. As much as I wanted Johnny Gaudreau in the summer I'm so happy it never happened because 0 chance we could of made this move. Let's thank the hockey gods.
Lou deserves credit for giving us Shero. And I speak as a anti-Lou guy. Shero set the table and Fitz is preparing the main course.

We'll never really know how much of Shero being here was Lou and how much was the owners. I know Shero had some loose connection here since Fred worked here for a hot minute, but I hardly think Lou was pounding the pavement looking for a replacement when he was out of here first chance he got after being nudged upstairs.

Clearly the best thing SHERO did here, was bringing in Fitz.

Is this enough to erase any Fitz doubt? Some people were pissed when we didn’t give up 2nd overall pick for Debrincat. Fitz was patient and now got Meier in instead for notably less. And he’s a better fit and more likely to resign long-term.
I was on the fence. He kept swinging and missing. He tried to get Tkachuk and Carolina’s Own but failed. If he succeeded then Meier wouldn’t be an option. Is this the better of the 3 for this team? Probably, but it wasn’t for his lack of trying with the others so this wasn’t some sort of grand plan to get Meier. If it works out, which I think it will, everyone will forget the other 2.

This, in a vacuum, is great.

Since he is now officially a Devil. Feel free to speculate lines and PP units with Timo now
Who says Lindy will put him on a PP? Wood/Haula/Nate aren’t going to be replaced. No room.

He’ll have to watch from the bench with Rango.

:)

In before “Yeah. Well. Only reason this one worked is because Grier used to be here and Meier has close friends with us. Not impressed.”

But he had very little control over the Tkachuk thing. It’s not swinging and missing when they get some package back that we can’t imaginable match and the player wants to go to Florida. There’s 31 other teams and you can’t force stuff to happen or panic. They weren’t good/viable options for us. He was patient, waited, made some other smart moves, the teams done well and now he’s made the right move when it was there and viable. Being a good Gm isnt about getting every big fish or making every big acquisition it’s about making smart ones and the right ones and if you look at everything Fitz has done to this point even before this trade he’s done an incredible job at that. Completely transformed our D. Brough in Vanacek. Brought in some decent support players up front and now had a viable opportunity to bring in a player like Meier and made it happen.

Assuming we sign Meier and Bratt the bottom 6 is going to have to be VERY cheap next year, no?
I mean Hughes and Nico being cheap helps as well as Mercer and some other potential players being on their ELC’s. I think we’ll have some money to work with but also be hoping some cheaper guys such as Clarke and Gritsyuk can help.

But really we have a lot coming off the books this off-season. Tatar, Severson, Graves, Haula, Wood, Blackwood (rfa), and Bernier from LTIR. Obviously some of those guys have to be replaced. But at most one of Graves or Severson gets resigned with Hughes and possibly Nemec joining. We could also get rid of Blackwood if we’re comfortable with Schmid and Daws being behind Vitek.

Tatar-Hischier-Mercer
Meier-Hughes-Bratt
Palat-Haula-Sharangovich
Wood/Boqvist-McLeod-Bastian
Mercer can do a quality job on either line IMO. I would give Nico an option to start with Meier since they have also played together. Make the opposition have to make a choice on who they try to use their shutdown players on.

So if they didn’t get Meier wouldn’t it be the same thing? He wanted a guy who went somewhere else.

I’m not saying saying that landing every big fish is the key to being a good GM (Look at Vegas) but the fact was that if Fitz got what he wanted in July, Gaudreau would be here and Meier wouldn’t. Tkachuk would be here and Meier wouldn’t.

I’m not saying he’s terrible or anything like that, but he’s dodged a few bullets accidentally this past off-season. If Gaudreau called back, would he have offered 11M? If Tkachuk would have wanted to come here, would he have offered Bratt?

This was a big hole that he’s identified on this team and finally filled it with, what I believe, is the best fit. I just don’t think it would have happened if Fitz actually got what he wanted last summer.

I mean crap happens sometimes and you get lucky...the Mets' Flores for Gomez trade fell through in 2015 infamously, but they wound up being forced to pivot to a better trade in Cespedes.

Fitz hasn't just been lucky though, he's been solid around the edges apart from the big game hunting.

Tatar - Nico - Mercer has been money but as some have pointed out both Jack and Timo are both volume shooters and may need to be separated. Maybe start Timo with Nico anyways since they have some chemistry already.

Timo - Nico - Tatar (TNT is a sick nickname)
Bratt - Jack - Mercer
Palat - Haula - Sharangovich
Wood - McLeod - Bastian
Boqvist

Awesome top 6 with 4 elite players. One of the better 3rd lines in the league by personnel, if they mesh it'll be incredible. 4th line when playing their game is one of the best. I think we have one of the best forward cores in the league and the best we've had in a LONG time. Going back to the 6 years ago thing, we would've killed for guys like Boqvist, Clarke, Foote, and Thompson with decent NHL potential back then over the teams full of journey men and reclamation projects. Now they're not even cracking the lineup.

Going into next year Holtz replaces Tatar and Boqvist/Thompson/Foote/Clarke should easily replace Wood. May have to grab a budget 3C option or try Boq or something, maybe hope he finds his 21-22 offense

Man its hard to break up that Tatar Nico Mercer line. I am sure at first there will be some mixing and matching because you can always go to it if you think you need it.

I think i would start with Timo Jack Bratt because i think that could be a dynamic line. Jack and Bratt can create a ton of space for Timo to get into with his shot. All three of three of those guys are threats to shoot and Jack and Bratt have that high level passing ability.

If not that then I might being Palat back into the top 6 and move Tatar down. Mix Jack Nico Bratt Timo Mercer Palat however you want.

I think one reason that Tatar Hischier and Mercer has worked lately is all three will do thr dirty work and go get the puck. I’m not sure Meier is best with Bratt and Jack who could maybe use a guy to do their heavy lifting? Not that Meier can’t do that but shoukd he be asked to do that? I’m sure they will mix and match for a couple of games to find what works. Again, chemistry being what it is i can’t wait for Meier Boquist and Holtz to go on a a tear together.

Wanna cycle and grind a team down.

Palat Nico Meier could be interesting.

Ya don’t split up that line they complement each other really well and are playing really good hockey. Replace Sharangovich and you automatically have one of the best lines in the NHL.

Meier Hughes Bratt

That’s ridiculous and so much fun

Between Hughes, Nico, Bratt, Meier, Mercer, Palat, Holtz and Sharangovich the top 6 should be set for the next 5+ years. To go along with a defense that has Hamilton, Marino, Siegenthaler, Hughes and Nemec and the top 4 defense being set, the Devils are in amazing shape where the only thing they should have to worry about improving for quite awhile is depth and maybe goaltending down the line.

There's plenty of time to experiment with line combos.

I wonder who is going to lose the PP time now that we have Meier.

Meier is going to go on his off wing on the PP I assume?

I don’t want to break up that nico line but if the devils feel they need to split up those volume shooters, I damn sure aren’t taking Mercer off of Nico’s wing. Those guys are developing chemistry and i love it. What about something like:

Mercer-Nico-Meier
Bratt-Hughes-Palat
Shango-Haula-Tatar

I like the idea of palat fishing the pucks out for Jesper and Jack. The first line is just 200 foot dominance. And that 3rd line should be able to feast on most other team’s 3rd lines.

Yeah, but honestly who has earned a raise there anyway?
McLeod probably gets a modest raise to a $2m per season contract.

Wood is gone for sure. One of Boqvist/Thompson/Foote will take his spot.

It will be either Palat or Bratt that gets bumped to 2nd unit.

If they like Palat's play in the bumper, then it could be Bratt that gets demoted.
