Who do you think pushed for the tweaking of the system because I think Ruff is too stubborn....Last year they said Fitz Marty and Ruff made the decision to go with Schmid but I think it was Fitz and Marty imo never bought that Ruff was on board
Purely Ruff.

In fact I think Ruff wanted to change up the system months ago but Fitz said no.

I'm obviously joshing, but fans speculating on potential scenarios so that we can still hate on Ruff is lame.

Kinda think the changing of the system had something to do with McLeod's departure....not exactly sure on the how and why...but the timing is too exact

I hope Mikey was not seen as so critical they would keep a system in place for him. That would be extremely discouraging. Playing a certain way for a 4th liner...

At the office right now, so can’t watch. Does Weekes throw any names out from/to the Devils?

He also pretty much says, mostly in speculation, that he’d be shocked if we stood pat before the deadline when it comes to goaltending. Pointed at the Flyers being just ahead of them in the standings as a reason to need to make a move.

My theory is it's the trickle down effect. McLeod out, Jack out and,/or on the wing forces Haula up and that effectively creates 2 center holes. 3 if you call Jack to Haula a downgrade as a top 6 center...

You're going From: Jack, Nico, Haula, McLeod

To: Nico, Haula, Lazar, Nosek

I kind of think that is reason for the change. First group is go-go fast paced up tempo, second group is simply Not. Second group is better suited for a more defensive center assignments

Just a theory but it makes sense in my warped mind :)

I just can't ignore the timing of it all coinciding with McLeod's leave.

I don’t think the timing is very exact.

McLeod last played on 1/22, Devils played 2 games after that with seemingly no tweaks.

Then the all-star break happens, this appears to be where the tweaking happens and Lazar mentions an intense video session and lists the changes.

We will never know but my opinion is the all-star break is when coaching and management got a lot of free time to huddle, study, and make changes they felt would be beneficial.

Then coming back from the break is when the teaching the players began.

I really think it was coincidental. The system obviously had to change, whether that was with a new coach or the staff we currently have. The point of no return in the year is essentially this month, usually starting after the All-star game and the few weeks to follow you get a pretty good idea of what teams will make it and won't. So something needed to be done to stay in the race. Break glass in case of fire type move.

I hate to say it, because you don't want to give credit to someone who doesn't deserve anything, but Mcleod IMO would have been a big part of this new system with the way he played. So his departure being a reason for the change doesn't add up to me.

Yea it’s a shame McLeod is a piece of shit, because the center depth would’ve been unreal. Though, it seems like he was playing out of his mind because he knew he had literally nothing to lose.

If they get a goalie and get healthy, this team is still a contender in my mind. Even sneaking in as a 8 seed. They would be better than your typical 8 seed (kind of like last year’s Panthers team). It would be a difficult road, but they could do it.

And the window should be open now. Hell in a few years Nico will be slated for UFA status. So the window should be between now and then (with a potential extension extending said window).

Certainly reasonable point of view. But I don't agree with the thought process.

Perhaps I am off...but there is no doubt that this is at least somewhat personnel influenced... perhaps Jack's shoulder is worse than we know?

Having a McLeod and group of fast centers allows for more high to low coverage as opposed to a more traditional east-west from the hash marks coverage. You can argue that you are neutering their speed in a more traditional coverage ...but a lot of that speed is no longer there at the center position.

Bottom line is I don't know but personnel decisions seems a lot more plausible than a player mutiny or front office seige of the coaching staff conspiracy theories that got zero push back
