Auvitu will hang around at least in the AHL. Playing in the NHL is a dream so few players from France managed to accomplish. He will work hard to get there, and if he has to wait in the AHL, he'll do it IMO.
This move suggests nothing about our off-season plans or who's in our out.

Probably, but I think some of it depends on what he signed for, which we still don't know. If NJ gave him a max ELC (without bonuses) that might mean something.
According to CapFriendly :
1 year - ELC - $792.500 cap hit
92.500 for signing
bonus max : 132.500 (games played)
AHL salary 70k.
If you have more than one team interested you're generally gonna get the max ELC. I wouldn't read much into it though cause you can just stash him in the AHL for 70k.
Still think it is safe to assume the point is for him to have a chance to unset Moore or Merrill in camp.

If he plays his way onto the roster, then Merrill is surely gone.

$70,000 is the AHL maximum for a player on an ELC.
This is a fine signing and what not, but this guy is basically tantamount to Mozik. If Auvitu makes the team I'll be happy, but I have zero expectations.
The Devils should still be in the market for an upgrade on their defense this summer. Auvitu is meant to give guys like Moore and Merrill some competition, not to play reliable top four minutes.
