These kind of signings happen all the time. Sometimes they work, more often than not they don't. I don't think it necessarily says anything about our larger plans this summer though. It's adding depth organizationally on the back end, and could ultimately just end up meaning somebody from Albany gets let go.

Probably, but I think some of it depends on what he signed for, which we still don't know. If NJ gave him a max ELC (without bonuses) that might mean something.

He definitely got max.

If you have more than one team interested you're generally gonna get the max ELC. I wouldn't read much into it though cause you can just stash him in the AHL for 70k.

It's not the max, and this is not true generally, either.

If Auvitu hits his games bonus, his contract will have been the same as a maximum ELC without bonuses.

I don't think he's definitely gonna be on the NHL roster, people said the same thing last year about Mozik probably being on the roster and he wasn't. Not until the last month for a call up.

But people also said they thought Kalinin would be on the NHL team out of camp and I said I didn't think he would be, and he did wind up being on the team for the entire season.

At the very least, it looks like Merrill might be missing the beginning of camp, or possibly the beginning of the season due to injury. But if Auvitu is good and it keeps Helgeson far away from the NHL team, that's a huge win in my book. But that's assuming that Auvitu is good at the NHL level.

From everything I've read, he's a superb skating defenseman with a good work ethic. He's also nearing that defenders prime at age 26.

Should be interesting to see how it works out. To me, this is going to be a lot like Kalinin and Gragnani were this past year. Without a doubt, Auvuti is likely to get an opportunity at some point next year. Maybe he can play his way onto the roster in training camp, it'll be interesting to find out, but impossible to predict.

Also good to have reliable depth

Auvitu has some commitments with the France NT as well.
He's going to a mini camp in June, then we have a training camp in August to prepare for the Olympic tournament early september. We need him to finish 1st vs Norway, Kazakhstan and Italy to reach the Olympic Games in Korea...

More XP of big games for him coming up !

If he plays his way onto the roster, then Merrill is surely gone.

Best case scenario is Merrill unexpectedly puts it together, and Auvitu pans out to be an NHL'er. That'd give us a very good problem to have.

According to CapFriendly :
1 year - ELC - $792.500 cap hit
92.500 for signing
bonus max : 132.500 (games played)
AHL salary 70k.

Fair contract - AHL salary seemed a bit low, but factoring the signing bonus he's still getting paid at least $162.5K next season.

With Merril likely sidelined to start the year, he should get a decent shot to make the team out of camp, though have to figure he spends significant time in the AHL.

This is a fine signing and what not, but this guy is basically tantamount to Mozik. If Auvitu makes the team I'll be happy, but I have zero expectations.

The Devils should still be in the market for an upgrade on their defense this summer. Auvitu is meant to give guys like Moore and Merrill some competition, not to play reliable top four minutes.

I don't know anything about him, as I didn't know anything about Schlemko when he was signed by Shero. Hope he pans out, at least as a bottom pairing D.

'Worst case ontario' he should be a good AHLer.

But he will be 27 this offseason, where as Mozik turned 23 in Dec. Auvitu also fits that Shero mold in terms of smooth skating d-man.

And the coup de gras, he's a lefty.

I think Auvitu will get a real look with Merrill out, and if he impresses then I could see him sticking around for a good while.

Does a move like this signify they won't be looking at a bigger name UFA? Maybe.
