Pretty wild how Tatar completely became irrelevant in the postseason. Like, he was an animal in the regular season which gave me hope that the prior story that was written on his postseason history was overblown. NOPE. Some of the worst metrics on the team while playing a lot with Nico. What a sad way to go because I don’t think he will be re-signed.

I don’t think a guy who was just diving head first to prevent a shot was wussing out.
don’t know why I have to say this let alone say it twice but if you can’t see the difference between this and the shot block you’re just being ignorant. One hurts the other doesn’t. Sometimes players mentally have trouble blocking shots. And that’s exactly what it looks like on the Burns goal

He was fine. Didn’t do enough offensively but battled hard and was fairly reliable. Was the least of our problems.

It would not surprise me if next year is a step back.

I'm expecting a step back next regular season since we'll have a decent amount of turnover and at least Luke and likely Nemec stepping in on the blueline. That's fine though as we're coming off a historic season for this franchise and it's all about the playoffs now.

Faceoffs mostly don’t matter, sorry. It’s fine to have a specialist for the ones that do, but don’t go out of your way to pay for that guy. There’s fewer than 5 really important faceoffs a game and an elite guy is only 20% better than the worst regular center in the league.

Eh...I disagree about fewer than 5 important faceoffs, especially when you consider that you probably have to double that to account for the times when a team in the defensive zone wins a faceoff that would've otherwise lead to a scoring chance but we would've only known about it had it been lost.
I don’t think Bratt is worth 9 mil. He absolutely is worth around 8. I’d give him max 8x8 right now. I think his true value is around 7.5-8. I’d feel a little iffy about going over 8, I’ll give you that.

I’d be very comfortable with the Fiala AAV. I also doubt he gets more than Hintz’s AAV.

Any extension for Bratt should start with a 7.

Ruff's earne
Agreed, but Ruff would have to find a new role on the team, I don't think he ends up as an assistant for Andrew. I don't think we see a change unfortunately, Hopefully no one comes calling for A

perhaps undeserved was the wrong word. he’s a great regular season guy, but he was also terribly disappointing in the postseason. not just by being held off the score sheet a lot, but he got absolutely mangled and neutered on a regular basis.

i’m ok with signing him to a team-friendly deal, but i really doubt he’s ok with that. if i’m fitz, i’m definitely exploring all options available.
well said.

Our watch has ended.

Plenty to be proud of our guys for all season and getting through the NYR series.

A bit a bummer in how we were dismantled in 3/4 losses to the canes. True colors were shown IMO.

But plenty of commendable contributions from guys worthy of our praise and applause!

Til next season!

and Bratt can kick rocks after we trade him.

I'm probably biased, but I find it difficult to really beat up on Tatar when our top scorers struggled as well. Unfortunately, it plays into his stereotype that he can't produce in the playoffs, but I thought he played his role fine in the Ranger series at least.

I'd like him to stay, but I think the numbers game will force him out.

It isn't that wild, honestly. Some people predicted it.

He's a player you move on from. I like the guy a lot and I think he played his role perfectly here, but he isn't a player you take the next step with.

We shouldn't feel too bad about it because he will certainly get another contract to be "dad" on a up-and-coming team like Anaheim, and he'll succeed there, too. Only in the regular season though.

Too much cynicism in this thread, we need to enjoy what we got to experience this season.

How about our first glimpse of Schmid this year when he had to come in cold and we thought we might be f***ed once again when Vanecek got hurt with Mac already sidelined?

I thought he played incredible last night. Some of those saves he made through screens are what elite goalies do. Looking forward to see what his ceiling is.

Akira gave us a chance. He f***ing stepped up to give the team a chance.

We threw away the gm5 win with Timo missing that open net.... it felt like a severe missed opportunity then and when the tying goal came it was even more devastating as a fan.

Really get New York (football) Giants vibe from this season.

Season was a lot of fun and it restored some respect to the franchise.

But there is a huge gap still between the Devils and legitimately competing for a Stanley Cup.

Maybe like the Maple Leafs three years ago.

This is apropos of nothing, but I was going back in my photos to change my avi, and I came across this gem I saved from the 2018 season:

One thing I'll say is, the goaltending is not set in stone. That is #1 priority this offseason. They need a reliable goalie.

I was mainly refering to the fact that Vanecek is already signed for next season and Schmid seems to be NHL ready. So it's hard to imagine they'd trade Vanecek or sign a 3rd goalie (at least a true starter, maybe a fringe backup for depth if they cut MBW) after Vitek got us to the playoffs and Schmid won us the 1st round. Even though every one of us wants an elite vezina contender goalie, it's much easier said than done.

I'd be ok with keeping Tatar on a low money and low years contract, but I think it's more likely that they let Holtz win his spot in the top 9 out of camp.

Can do both. Only have 6 of 9 top 9 spots locked down. Hughes, Hischier, Meier, Bratt, Mercer, Palat.

3 more spots between Holtz, Sharangovich(no), Tatar, Haula, and any UFA or trade additions. Would personally like to keep Tatar if it’s like 1 or 2 years at 3M.

we will resign bratt if the money isnt prohibitive. (Capt obvious) kid takes the puck to the net, and beats most dmen on the pivot, or causes them to overgap. that creates possessions
dougie -11 ouch i think the plus minus here isnt a useless stat. how about 15 shifts and 15 mins
Marino winner winner chicken dinner love his cool... a better andy greene and thats a compliment

I'd be fine with him back, but he should be anything more than 3rd line material at this point in his career. One of the benefits of getting as far as we did is to have learned who is made of what now moving forward.

And another mentioned, Holtz may be given a shot instead. I don't think we have much to lose at this point by giving Holtz a serious shot.
