I'm not sure who our number 1 overall D is, but it's going to be Luke by year's end if it isn't him already.

No one is really playing the type of 200 foot game he is playing back there.

That's my feeling. Feel like Luke has taken his game to such a level on D and once he gets a bit more time and possible a chance on PP1 it will be clear to everyone. He is clearly more comfortable with what he is doing on there.

Luke is an absolute menace on the ice but off it looks like he's dreading waking up for his 10am class tomorrow
canucks fans affectionately call Quinn Hughes "Captain Lexapro" and Luke definitely has a little bit of that going on. Quinn is on another level, though.

Only got to watch a bit of the first live , but rewatching now and wow that was a bad challenge by Lalonde

I don't think it was a bad challenge. Talbot got hit and part of him was in the crease, but Noesen wasn't in the crease at all and was trying to avoid contact. I thought it would be upheld after the replays, but live I thought it would not count. That said, maybe challenging when up 2-0 is not a good idea when you have a lousy penalty kill, but I think that had a better than 10% chance of working.

Hamilton is playing really well on the power play and his finishing from the slot gives us another big option that other teams can’t shut down all of them. He’s moving the puck quickly from side to side to Jack and Bratt and things aren’t getting stagnant with him up top as they did in years past.

Our puck retrieval on the power play is outstanding, I’ve not seen a Devils team this strong on pucks since the glory days in the early 2000s, and Nason down low and screening in front is a big difference right there. They must respect Hischier in the bumper too with his dramatic improvement in releasing his shots.

What’s with Markstrom on the first couple shots of every game lately I do not know. Really we don’t want to be spotting other clubs two or three goals early in game after game. But wow he came up with great saves otherwise in a topsy turvey back and forth game.

Like everyone I loved our toughness tonight. We outhit them and didn’t back down in a nasty physical game. An entirely different vibe around this team than years past.

Luke Hughes was the best player on the ice today for both teams. An extraordinary show by a dominant player who’s still just a kid.

If we get it together a little this team has the potential to do some special things this spring. The most hopeful I’ve been about a Devils team’s upside in ages.

Luke looks unreal. The fact his defensive game is so strong as well is incredibly impressive.

He isn't going to be PP1 any time soon, but I'd like to see if Keefe can find him another minute to minute and a half at even strength and perhaps give Dillon a bit less. Dillon is older so giving him less minutes could preserve him a bit for playoffs.
Here are our EV minutes. NOTE, every other pairing (siegs in particularly) has numbers boosted slightly by the fact that Nemec-Casey played like 10 minutes a game.

If we start losing more luke will play more if we are chasing leads in the 3rd.

But in terms of EV, luke pesce is already the top pairing. This is since they got back (not counting tn)

There is no reason to take hamilton off the PP.

He's excellent in that role, and luke gives a pop to PP2 as a sure fire entry guy that hamilton I don't think would. Also, I think it's good to keep luke "rested" so to speak. He hit a wall at a certain point last year playing number 1 D role adjusting from the college schedule.

Meier and Luke are both able to drive things themselves on a PP, something our PP2 lacked last year and I don't think Hamilton or Noesen (guys they would replace) can do that.

Why take hamilton off PP1 to punish him for his supposed lack of EV play? He's already getting less EV minutes with how good the other pairings look there, but he is an elite PP weapon. Use him as such

Luke is wonderful and flashy and all things sexy, but I wish he wouldn't make stupid ass passes into people's skates in one goal games.

Love the kid and he has all the tools but I don't want him out there in the last minutes of a game quite yet until he burns off some of that rookieness.

So, he's our most talented Dman for sure, but not our#1 and it's just bc he's green and that's not his fault

I'm glad that the Devils managed to put that stupid Jack/Rasmussen shit behind them.

They can't come out slow like that early in the game and be distracted with that dumb stuff that led to the Wings powerplay goal early on. The powerplay did work today though and they atleast battled back this game to where it was pretty evenly back and forth. The Devils have been great in the 2nd period too.

Those are coin flips at best
he has the benefit of seeing better views before we do.
he challenged it knowing the Devils PP scored 8 seconds into the previous one.
Against what has been a historically bad PK.
when you were competing well at 5v5.

I’ll take my chances with a 2-1 lead and keeping the worst part of the team off the ice. Maybe I’m putting too much emphasis on leverge that early in the game though.

This was an ugly one, despite the chances generated.

The team is like a lens that's shifting in and out of focus before settling on a clear image. It's coming together but still blurry enough that you can't press the shutter yet.
