Prospect Info: Devils Prospect Poll 2013- #5

I guess I was the only one who didn't walk away all that impressed with Matteau last year. Obviously there's room for growth but is he really more valuable than a guy like Wedgewood?

Has to. If nothing else by virtue of the fact he's one of only three Devils prospects who have any real shot at a top-6 role. As far as "impressed" goes, I was fairly impressed. He may not have contributed a whole lot, but he didn't look too out of place, and power forwards tend to be late bloomers anyway. I think Matteau could be a really solid player for us sooner rather than later.

Wonder if Wedgewood would be higher if we didn't just trade for Schneider.

I would say no. Didn't have that great of a year. With him and Kinkaid splitting time this year in the AHL I think we see one of the two put distance between the other. My money is on Wedge over Kinkaid.

Went with Matteau, just because I liked what I saw from him during his time here. No wrong answer for any of these polls.

The very thought crossed my mind as well. But in fairness to the board, I don't think he gave us much to get excited about over the last year.

And this isn't to put down another but Matteau was non-existant up here and got kicked off his minor league team. But he is still looked at high, why? Is it because we have no real forward prospects (sans Boucher)? Just don't know why Wedgewood isn't thought of so high anymore.

Wow I had no idea Santini was in such great company in winning U18 best defenseman.

The previous winners:
Matt Dumba (potential top pairing guy)
Ryan Murphy (potential top pairing)
Adam Larsson (potential #1 d man)
Cam Fowler (already turning into an elite d-man)
Erik Karlsson (Norris winner)
Kevin Shattenkirk (#1/2 defenseman)
Jamie McBain (decent bottom pairing offensive defenseman)
Luc Bourdon ( had very bright future, RIP)
Zach Jones (small, never made impact in NHL)
Brent Seabrook (#1 defenseman)
Ryan Suter (#1 defenseman)

And then 3 nobodies but wow, is he in great company

I don't like Matteau but voted for him. I don't like him mainly cause of the circumstances of not giving up the 29th pick...and the fact that if they were going to use that pick, picking what I believe to be a 3rd liner makes no sense...That's just my opinion.

All that being said for any 18 year old to step into the lineup and not look terribly out place is an accomplishment. A major accomplishment.

Matteau come straight out of the U.S. National Development program, without playing Major Junior and stepped right into the Devils lineup. I mean, you can argue he wasn't impressive but when you look at his age and overall experience to have slotted in on any NHL teams lineup was quite a feat. I think that has some real value.

Let's not talk about him even being on our team. Lou has made some bad moves as of late and that is as bad as it gets, keeping that pick (of course burning a year off his contract was also terrible).

And sorry, I didn't see him doing anything up here. He was kind of there. The only reason he was there was because we needed forwards so bad. And they pushed and pushed for him to be there, then finally realized he wasn't ready.

I like his 17 games in the lineup more than Tedenby's 47 for the last two seasons.

Going with Matteau here. Add Burlon.

I like Santini as a prospect, but he has like negative offensive upside.

Loved what I saw from Matteau last year. Was shocked he made the team at all(granted odd circumstances allowed it) then to go out an showed that he can physically handle the NHL game at the age of 19? This from a lat 1st rnder? I was impressed.

If nothing else his physicality will allow him to be an NHL'r. I see that as a lock.

These are not legit reasons to not like Matteau. These are criticisms of Lou. U need to seperate the 2 and judge Matteau on his own merit.

Hopefully this season he has a real home, plays a full season at a level where he belongs and he is #1 in this poll next summer.
