Just want to see some opinions. As a devils fan, I’m really optimistic about the teams future and want to see how others think we line up with our rivals say 3-5 years from now.
I'd rather be a Devils fan than a Rangers fan right now.
Goaltending I'd say is probably pretty close.
Defensive core: Again, pretty close - Fox/Trouba/Miller vs Hamilton/Graves/Smith
Forward core: I'd give a significant edge to NY, but that might change quickly (Panarin/Zib/Kakko/Laf vs Hughes/Hischier) and the C depth for NJ might have more weight to it than the winger depth of NY
Prospects/Young NHLers: I give a big advantage to NJ here just because their prospect pool is full of really good wingers to compliment their very good U22 centers
NY is handcuffed to some big contracts (Panarin is a good deal, but Kreider + Goodrow is 9m on your 3rd line ... Trouba is an 8m 2nd pairing D) whereas NJ has no bad contracts after this next season. I think the contracts for Boqvist/Zacha/Bratt/Wood will be the determining factor for how good the Devils can be - if they can get them all locked up to reasonable deals, spend the Subban money on adding a top 6W and a top 4D and then add some combo of Hughes, Foote, Mercer, Holtz on ELCs, the Devils can easily become a cup favourite by 2023-2024.
As a side note: If I am the GM of the Devils, I am calling Vancouver and asking what it takes to get Q.H to NJ ... one of Mercer/Holtz, one of Bratt/Zacha, a first round pick and maybe something small ... imagine.
Graves/Hamilton
Q.Hughes/Smith
L.Hughes/X
Could end up being one of the best defensive corps in the league in a couple of years
