I didn’t watch the game only the re-cap. And I have to say I thought Blackwood could have stopped the OT goal.
Ya it was a weird goal. Shot was impeded by Bratts stick and changed the shot a little but still went through Blackwood.
Blackwood did make numerous key saves though that got us to OT. Like a tweet said , Blackwood got us the one point but also cost us the two points.

I'm 99% sure that didn't touch Bratt's stick.

Story of his career. Even when he plays well, he manages to undo it by giving one right back. The Devils had no business being in the position to win that one, but once you’re there that kind of goal is just a real kick in the teeth.

This tendency of his reminds me of Schneider, even though they are not similar goalies otherwise. To wit: Make utterly ridiculous saves that he has no business making, then give up a complete softy at the worst time.

I don't understand why he has this reputation though.

The only time I can remember him constantly giving up a complete softy was when he was in his decline and he just wasn't any good anymore.

Yeah, he gave up some bad goals while he was still good, for sure, but they really weren't a constant.

I remember thinking in 15-16 that it was extremely rare to see him allow a goal he had any chance on. Of course there were probably quite a few, but not like we've seen ever since.

Same with the 14-15 season, outside of the first month, where he allowed some really piss poor goals.

And he allowed some memorably bad ones in 13-14. Not too many bad ones, but some memorably bad ones that may have cost him a few starts in favor of Marty (who am I kidding? They were probably gonna keep starting Marty as much as they did anyway) like that brutal goal early against Pittsburgh in 13-14.

I disregard anything after from about November of 2016 onward, as he was no longer elite, nor probably even good at all by that point and just progressively got worse with every year after that.

Schneider was a MUCH better goaltender than Blackwood could ever dream to be. Outside of when Schneider was badly declining due to his bad hip, very early in Blackwood's career. And it's been all downhill for Blackwood since that year.

I'm really a fan of all generations of Mets broadcasters. Even Fran Healy lol.
Seriously, I can't comprehend any Mets fans not liking the current crop of announcers we have. Our fanbase is absolutely spoiled going back to Lindsey, Bob, and Ralph, and right now between Cohen and Rose you've got two of the best play-by-play guys in the business who, oh yeah, just so happened to grow up Mets fans. They're both getting older now, so the hope is that there's another crop on the horizon (I wish they'd hire Josh Lewin back for the radio team, another lifelong Mets fan who called games for them a few years ago).

Anyway, 9 out of 10 points on a west coast swing where the Devils weren't always at their best? No way in hell I'm complaining about that. Sucks they probably could've gotten the 10th last night, but after the 3 games in 4 days and how long the trip has been overall I get it if they're not completely on top of their game.

Bottom six still needs to stabilize, though. Bastian being back is great, but it'll be tough to tell if he's 100% yet; him being healthy and playing to his potential helps balance the lines a lot, but it might take a bit to see them get there. Fly home, rest up, see if that can all get in order over the next little bit.

Did Bastian even play at all in the 3rd period? I know that line was mostly benched (and good riddance) in the 3rd period, but I don't even think he had a shift and I know Wood and McLeod did.

It was just a false fabrication woven by Brodeur zealots who couldn't separate Scheneider from the crappy skaters and try to pin the results on him.

Talk about rationalization……. That year had major rationalization.

From Brodeur helps the offense, to Brodeur makes just that one save to seal the game and that’s why we win. And Schneider doesn’t and that’s why he loses.

Meanwhile and I shit you not, one of those games Marty let in an absolute stinker to tie the game for the other team in the 3rd period, which we responded to shortly after with the GWG. I clearly remember there being claims that Marty made those key saves to allow us to win and close it out, but in reality he was credited with exactly 0 shots faced between the poor goal allowed and the end of the game.

I swear this was Ruutu’s first game here and it was against the Canes. And he scored the game winner.

And while we’re on the topic of wins, Vanecek has won 72% of his decisions, while Blackwood has won 54% of his.

Don’t think he did, not sure if that was just having him on a pitch count or not

According to Amanda he didn’t play at all

"I think I was just lucky. I don't know who it was, (Jesper) Bratt maybe, it hit his stick and went five-hole," Burakovsky said. "I mean, that's not really what I was trying to do but it worked out."

Just watching the replay something definitely hit Bratts stick on that shot. It may not necessarily have been the puck, but it could have been Bura's blade on the release of the shot...completely throwing off where he was trying to shoot.

This is what it looked like to me. Blackwood plays where everything the players stick and body says the puck is going and it goes somewhere else due to Bratt’s stick. Unlucky for the Devils.

Impressive that he admits it. Humble.
Of course he's humble.

His team won.

He's feeling magnanimous right now.

Anyway, regardless of whether it hit Bratt's stick or not, Blackwood needed to make that save.

Yeah, probably...but I think it certainly makes the goal a bit less worse than originally thought if that's the case. Certainly reasonable that Blackwood was going towards where Burakovsky was intending to shoot and the deflection threw things off a bit.

Question.

Did Blackwood comment on that last goal postgame and where he thought it was headed?

It was his blade. That’s exactly what it was. The puck didn’t look like it hit Bratt’s stick at all.

Regardless, you gotta make that save. Pucks hit goalies on deflections. Goalies save much tougher “Deflections” than that.
