Florida is an extremely winnable game.

We’re gonna have a bad goalie in there, but Florida will also have a bad goalie, as I doubt they start Knight after his game in Boston.

Bob is no-count anymore and we should be able to get some past him.

I don’t care what happened the other night. Bob got blown up by Columbus earlier this year before he got the shutout against them.

And just because I know people will say “Well we couldn’t score against him the other night”. I don’t care how many times he beat us when he played for the Jackets. Before the other night, we had gotten him yanked the last two times we played him, but they came back and won and he didn’t get the decision.

We blew Carter Hart up not even two weeks before he blew us up.

It is kind of crazy how many other teams have gotten hot right as we've gone cold. Carolina has points in 12 straight. The Pens have won 12 of their last 15. The Caps and Rangers have both won 7 of their last 8.

I’m a little more worried about the Capitals than the Islanders at this point, although not when the playoffs roll around. I’d bet a comfortable amount that’s yet another one and done.

Their schedule coming is so soft, the Rangers are the toughest opponent probably in their next 2 weeks.

Well, they do play Winnipeg at home before but break, but Rittich was in tonight and they had to call up somebody else because Hellebuyck was out sick. The Jets with Rittich in for Hellebuyck are a much weaker team.

I know you don't want to discuss the 'goalie crisis' but I think the main worry hear is we will head to another one.

I don't think VTEC is an above average goalie. An improvement over the past shite yes, but he's still an average guy.... And you can clearly see what happens to average goalies if they get to start the games with breakdowns and giveaways. This game was over :12seconds in. We got so many breaks (called back goals, crossbars) and even weathered some PPs and odd man rushes.

What do you think a goalies mind set gets to be when this comes at him for a few games?

They don't have to be ten bell chances (like weird deflections that bounce over the goalie and fortunately got the crossbar (I thought that was going to break mb29 right out of the gate) or giveaways and snipes off the ass.

VTEC was doing a snow angel 5seconds into this game. That's good news?

You guys think Schmid laid an egg the other day? Thank God they sent him down bc if he stuck around another week we'd be wondering why his SV% is in the .700s.

Show me all the heat maps you want. Outside of the Hughes goal they weren't dangerous in this game. Ever. There wasn't any ounce of momentum or second chance shot or deflection or nice set up. Nothing.

Meanwhile our goalies looked at odd play in front of them all night.

How many times tonight did you see a short, clean, completed pass? How many times did you see our transition game? Any forced turnovers that sent us back the other way resulting in a shot?

We could bench Marino for next game but just like on the offsides burns play, there are no forwards in our zone ready to accept a pass with their feet moving... Ever. Unless you count the PP.

Teams are forcing us to dump and chase and we can't do it.

I like this team, and we'll figure it out, but anytime saying we are winning play or 'dominating' in any of the last ten games is full of shit.

We are a different team right now bc they are talking things away.
We aren’t headed to a goalie crisis like last year. We lost Bernier after he played in 10 games.

We lost Wedgewood almost immediately on waivers and only had two young rookies who just turned pro in our minor system available as call-ups.

Blackwood was on the IR for 15 weeks and he played in pain for most of the season.

At one point we had to play Schmid even though he couldn’t handle the job because Daws was also on the IR and Gillies was in COVID protocol.

We actually used a too-injured-to-actually-play Bernier as a back-up goalie a couple of times before he officially went on the IR forever.

We traded for a 34 year old goalie who had just played his first 4 NHL games since 2018 (when he played 1), then injured his ankle and hadn’t played in a month. We didn’t give him a AHL conditioning stint first because of our desperate need for a warm body in our net. This goalie also just retired.

That’s a goalie crisis.

It’s pretty normal for a serviceable tandem goalie to hit a rough patch in a NHL season, particularly in when teams are averaging 3.16 G/GP, 2.94 GAA and .905 SV% (.900 with empty net goals).

Carolina is an elite team who isn’t losing to anyone right now, I did not see this team getting their shit together against them.

Each of the loses have been different and some have been more winnable (or at least more loser pointable) than others. It doesn’t really matter since that’s spilt milk.

Florida actually plays very well but they get poor goaltending we need to take advantage of this time.

Our defense has gotten sloppier when start pressing. It happens. It would be nice if guys would not play like dogshit defensively (the top pair (particularly Siegenthaler), Sharongovich, Wood, McLeod, other too).

Less dumb penalties would be nice.

On the plus side, at least the Penguins hung on to win in regulation. Thought for sure that would be a three point game.

Looks like it's coming down to Devils, Rangers and Islanders for final two spots - if the Devils ever win another game.😑

Poor Jack has McJesus Syndrome. Can’t do it all himself.

Except two years ago Kuokkanen-Boqvist-Sharangovich showed some promise.

Can't help thinking Janne is enjoying Switzerland a lot more than Newark.

I too was on the Janne train, but he was looking good for ONLY a brief period, though

Last season he just f'ed up too many plays.

Maybe it could have worked if we had a better record last year, but we have better options with Zetterlund, Haula, and Palat on roster.

Im more concerned with Rango and Ruff usage of him. Maybe its warranted (he has been a black hole chance generation/production wise recently)

Btw I guess the ‘they need to go on the road to be more relaxed’ meme is over with, although they’re due serious regression there too.

Hey all, I just wanted to mention something re: Haula and Canes fans. Haula used to play for the Canes, but he and his wife experienced a personal tragedy while living here. We all sympathized with them. They wanted to get out of Raleigh, that’s totally understandable. But they completely trashed the team, fanbase and the city of Raleigh when they left. Most of us were confused by that.

So now he gets booed whenever he steps on the ice here. Those booing Hamilton were just idiots though. Nothing but love for Dougie down here.

Haula has been good for us, minus his ability to score goals with grade A chances. He is putting up points, helping defensively a huge amount and has some chemistry with Hughes.

We were curious about the boos for Haula on the thread here earlier...it was louder than Dougie even.

Yeah was surprised to hear the boos for Dougie. I thought he was relished down there (even after leaving)

Man if the Panthers are still mad about Barkov, then we're in trouble tonight. This team is too soft.... and when our top six (outside of Jack) stops scoring like they all have this will be a huge problem.

If they're still mad, I hope Ruff gets in the ears of the officials and tells them to watch the Panthers closely 'cause they're going to be targeting Nico a lot.

We need to respond better physically, but would be nice if the refs called some penalties too. The amount of roughing/cross checks/slashing they let go was ridiculous.

That just starts the cycle of what is wrong with this team. They won't stand up for each other.... and if the refs call some penalties, our powerplay that has completely disappeared won't score.

Yeah.

Jesper Bratt can remove his head out of his ass and start playing Devils Hockey.

That would certainly help. :squint:
While you put it crudely, getting Bratt going would definitely be a spark. What are the chances he’s playing through an injury right now ? I think I’d have wanted to watch him live at the games and not on TV to have an opinion.

Haula is also a $2million player who is supposed to be our 3rd line center.

17 goals like last year would have far exceeded his contract and role.

He's kind of been whatever, but he's not a complaint point.

I don't think it's an injury. His skating is still as good as it has been. He's flying around but then has absolutely no idea what to do around the net. Might be a confidence issue because he just looks like he really doesn't want to shoot.

Is Jesper Bratt just a shadow player that can thrive if someone else is pulling the coverage on his line leaving him open to roam and find the soft spots? I don't see him driving the net alone and leading the rush. He's not even scoring on breakaways now which makes me wonder if he's just a complimentary player, not a feature one. We don't need to sink tons of money long term into one of those guys if it ends up costing you true feature players elsewhere.

??

Bratt is having a real meh stretch right now, but he’s still PPG on the year. He’s not a complimentary player. I’m sure he’ll turn it around, right about now would be nice though.

During the L streak, Jesper Bratt is getting ~68% of shot attempts and ~70% of expected goals. The team is shooting 5% with him on the ice in this stretch. The team is shooting 4.5% with Nico out there. 3% with Sharangovich. 0% with Zetterlund. There’s no reason to believe any of this will continue.
