That team had a bit more benefit of the doubt. They made the playoffs plenty. This team just shat themselves for 4 months before barely scrapping into the playoffs after what was supposed to be “an off year” in 2023-2024.

People bitched about first round exits quite a bit back in the day.

It’s not particularly uncommon for seasons to have drastic ups and downs.

This season’s team has flaws, but again, that’s also not uncommon.

People can feel whatever they want about this team but I don’t buy that there’s a real argument behind those feelings.

Shouldn’t have mattered with a 3-0 lead after the 1st tbh. Seemed bad, but at some point face adversity.
I dont disagree but w hen everything is going one way, its tough to manage.

We went up 3-0, refs puit the whistles away on everything against us. And then call soft shift which brought the energy back to CAR

Then the Aho dive (LOL) which again is a complete missed call

Pesce, Timo, and Nico were the team MVPs this series. I may get a Pesce jersey tbh. Guy laid it all out there with no supporting cast.
Dumoulin was good too. Nemec as well.

Its sad because I'm looking at stats for all of our players this series and there were many positive +/- players and some around 0 or -1. The special teams and lack of depth are the 2 reasons they lost this series. Having Jack, Luke and Kovacevic would of helped the special teams and 5 on 5 scoring. Jack being out of the lineup doesn't excuse guys like Haula, Cotter, Glass, Dowling, Bastian, Palat from putting up lousy offensive numbers....

In 2009–10 we had a hot start (41 GP 30-10-1 61 pts .744), and then sucked dead donkey dickey (41 GP 18-17-6 42 pts .512), before getting curb stomped by the Flyers in 5 games.

I don’t see how that team was somehow more likable than this one.
Basically that's more or less what we did this year, only we had more life in the playoffs but were worse down the stretch in the regular season. I'm surprised the Baghdad Bob postgame even put up the graphic of team record up till Dec. 27 and since.

If Nico ever gets slandered here in the near future, should be a permaban.

Guy not only produced but played the toughest minutes with corpses of line 2,3,4 being towed around.

The Biggest disappointment for me this series was Bratt. While he looked good in parts (and got some early points), he played an absolute perimeter game. I better hear he was dealing with something because he did not play soft in regular season, but somehow did it in the playoffs.

Meier was good and Palat "decent" relatively.
Most of this. Poor Hischier got ridden into the ground this season with the worst deployments/matchups of any top 6 C in the league by a mile (including pre Jack injury). 47 faceoffs tonight is just part of the problem. Fitz deserves 100% of the blame for this for going into the season with putrid C depth and no prospects/AHLers to even take a flier on.

As for Bratt: Folks scoff at the "playoff hockey" narrative despite history being littered with tons of great regular season players that fell/fall off a cliff in the postseason. Bratt isn't in that category yet, but 2G and 7A in 17 playoff games isn't a great start. Shooting sub 6% playoff career with PP1 time. He contributed to how particularly awful the powerplay was this series. He created some great chances when he actually drove the net or at the very least cut towards it this series....unfortunately he doesn't do it nearly enough. So many times he creates tons of space for himself as defenders respect his agility, then wastes it by pivoting back towards the point for no reason. It's maddening...regardless of his linemates.

As bad as the refs were, Carolina only scored one of the four goals on the PP in regulation, even if the first was an almost PP goal...the first two were still completely on Markstrom.

That team had the highest expectations at that point of the Lou post cap era teams because they added a bonafide superstar at the deadline. Losing in 5 was downright horrendous especially to the Flyers who made the playoffs in a shootout and had Boucher in net. It's not even comparable lol

That's fair too, that Devils team was 'favored' on paper against a seven seed, this Devils team was anything but with the worst record in the playoffs, and that was even before all the nonsense around the defensive injuries.

Recalling the season, another thing that jumps out is how tepid our scoring was 5 on 5. We just weren’t dangerous there. Our power play carried us all year and when it scored we won and when it didn’t we lost. We have got to get better 5 on 5 going forward.

Both the power play and the PK were our strengths this season.

Clearly we improved dramatically from the prior season. Making the playoffs was a big accomplishment in my eyes. But with Jack and Nico in their primes now (Bratt and Timo too) we have to find a way to complete the build out. I don’t think we are there and unfortunately don’t believe we need just a couple supporting pieces. I think we maybe need another key player or two if we are truly going to compete for the cup.

We took major steps in the right direction though. And I think Keefe got every bit out of this roster this year that could have been got.

This team is now two years removed from the highest point total in franchise history, with the same core, after missing the playoffs last year and nothing to show for it two years later.

I think it’s debatable, but tbh who cares lol. Disappointment after disappointment. What an absolutely horrific season.

That team won the division and got a banner in the rafters though. The last time we actually won a division too.

We've never won the division since they changed it to the Metropolitan.

I almost forgot we're now 1-14 in the playoffs against these ****heads down there since 2001.
Yeah going forward, the road to any playoff success leads through Carolina. We simply have to get the monkey off our backs and learn to beat these guys. Maybe we took a step in that direction this time. Only time will tell. We were right there with them in every game except game one.

  • Great series given expectations/situation: Hischier, Dumo
  • Good series: Nemec, Pesce, Meier (1.5 rough games tho)
  • Indifferent: Pretty much everyone not listed
  • Launch into the sun: Haula, Hamilton, Glass (4C if basically free), Dowling (not fair)

Nemec is in the first category. He scored the OT winner and has been a defense wizard while showing lots of patience in the O-zone.

Marsktrom posted better numbers than Hellebuyck has in the 4 games he played so far. Aside from that 2nd goal tonight (which yes was pivotal) he was strong in goal. He literally posted better numbers then the goalie who is probably going to win the Vezina this year. Shit, he posted better numbers than Vaslivesky & Kuemper so far. That's the 3 goalies up for Vezina contention.

I'm sure someone will post some stupid take saying "his numbers are inflated because Carloina shoots alot". The goaltending this year was much improved. Fitzgerald just needs to fix this offense. This team isn't far off from being a better playoff team.
