It has no business in this particular thread, which is about yesterday's Game 1. They started another thread for these discussions.
People keep saying this but it's difficult to point out the glaring holes and poor performance without explaining why. Game 1 is over, it's long over. Are we going to keep analyzing each of the four goals and 50000 shots against but ignore the why of it?

Dude, Dumo was acquired this past summer for a 2026 4th....partially to get the Ducks to the cap floor. The Devs paid a 2025 2nd in an obviously LOST SEASON. That. Is. The. Point. Dumo was a fine add if this team had a shot in hell at getting out of the 1st round....conversely, why is a shit team overpaying for deadline adds that don't move the needle???

Death by a thousand Tommy Fitz induced papercuts. Dude refuses to make the difficult decisions, creates his own problems, and then overcorrects when he finally realizes it a year+ too late and/or has zero leverage.

guy its a 2nd round pick relax. the league creates new ones every year and we get them. i dont want a 2nd round pick to draft a kid to watch him play 5 years from now

Tatar will be back in. We need new looks and try to find some lighting in a bottle

Id reunite the Palat Tatar Mercer line. They were looking good as a checking line a few weeks back

Meier Hischier Noesen
Cotter Haula Bratt
Palat Mercer Tatar
Lazar Bastian

Play 7D

While I agree in general that offseason talk isn’t for GDT’s, second guessing draft picks or deadline moves does tend to happen in every GDT

Not 5 years usually, and 3-4 years ago when we traded a bunch of these.... wouldn't it be nice to have them coming in now?

lmao. you keep saying this but Shero trading all our 2nd and 3rd round picks is a reason why we have no depth now. there’s absolutely no deeper logic to your thinking than “most 2nd rounders aren’t stars and we get new ones every year.”

plenty, if not most 2nd rounders become nhlers and if they can fill roles on cheap contracts it lets you ice a deeper/better team. trading them for more expensive players or basic fillers that don’t move the needle like dumoulin is just bad asset management. having 2 2nd rounders may allow you to trade up for someone that will be more impactful. you act like they’re worthless and should be given away like candy

Tbh second and third rounders aren’t nearly as big a deal as failing to get shit out of a lot of your firsts a la Holtz and the fourth liner who had one good half season and is now on bail in exile. Even a guy like Mercer has regressed big time

awhile back i actually went back through sheros trade history and if i remember correctly he brought back in almost exactly the same amount of draft picks as he dealt out or something really close to that. i also believe at that time i looked and none of the players amounted to much of anything. maybe thats changed maybe im remembering it wrong but this team doesn't need draft picks anymore. for better or worse it has its core in place it has the defense in place and goaltending for another year. they need legit nhl talent now not 5 years from now not maybe and unknowns. use whatever draft capital you have to that surrounds this group with talent now! nemec holtz top end draft capital drafted and probably both gone next year use the draft capital and get help

He literally said “this is what we expected” so you expected to not show up, get completely outplayed/outshot and get steamrolled? I don’t get it.
Getting outshot ≠ Getting outplayed

Hurricanes outshoot everyone it’s expected and that was the subject during the interview. Its up to NJ to adapt and find a way to control the game. Giving up perimeter shots all game is fine if they can break the Canes neutral and D zone play and get good chances. That didn’t happen til the 3rd yesterday.

Luke injured in the net as Markstrom chops down his own player sums up this game, holy shit what a mess.

first off we are talking about this years 2nd so 4 years from now no i dont care who is coming up in 2029. secondly if you are even talking about x years ago the answer is still no because 1 this team can't draft worth a shit 2 cant develop worth shit 3 i want known abilities not a bunch of rookies or sophmore slumpers (mercer types) that just keeps kicking the can down the road not knowing what type of player we might or might not have.

somehow vegas and the bolts and i'm sure others can survive and THRIVE without any draft picks every year it seems. but for some weird reason we NEED all these 2nd and 3rd rounders. now if you want to say we need them because the core isn't as good as we think? i might agree with you because vegas and bolts have legit nhl talent for their cores. we have softcore

Cool, but you are talking as if the picks were given up to help the team win in the future. When in reality, they were lit on fire in a blatantly lost season. Just like overpaying for Allen last year 4 months too late and when no Cup contender even wanted him for playoff goalie depth. How he's played since is irrelevant, he had no market. Constantly doing this is, again, death by a thousand Tommy Fitz induced papercuts. You also keep acting as if you have to use your draft picks in the draft. What if they instead used that 2nd or less to get rid of Palat? That'd make much more sense if trying to build a winner...eventually.

Good GMs accumulate future assets when their team has no shot in hell at contending....or you end up in a vicious cycle of never actually being a serious contender. Aka purgatory.

Hard to put this in Shero when he hasn’t been the GM since 2019. Fitz made moves to recoup draft picks when he started and came up bust. Two of the Hurricanes key players in the series were drafted after Holtz and Stillman for example. It on those more recent picks and they are in a situation where you can survive injuries.

i'll be honest i typed out a reply to what i think you are talking about then i was like i dont know what your talking about so i deleted it.

bottom line is this trading those picks under shero didn't hurt the team now (as i proved years ago) and trading picks now isn't going to hurt the team going forward.
