i could chalk those two ranger games up to playoff inexperience and a fan rival in the crowd. but no more playoff inexperience excuse and can't say they didn't have time to prepare or know who they were facing this time. yesterday was way worse then the first two ranger games and honestly tomorrow might be even worse then sunday

Sure, you could have chalked it up to that, but again the problems with those games were that they shifted the way the team was playing to try and play more "playoff-style hockey" instead of what made them successful that year. It backfired spectacularly.

We're arguing semantics here anyway. We lost yesterday pretty handedly, but nothing I saw from that game surprised me. We were second to a lot of pucks, we were not fluid in our own transition game and we could not withstand Carolina's pressure. They have the opportunity to respond tomorrow. We'll see what they do with it.

I think you're glossing over those first two Ranger games personally. Yeah, the shot totals weren't as lopsided as yesterday's game, but I think if you look back at how this board was reacting after getting outscored 10-2 on home ice, coupled with a horrific PK and goaltending, the room for belief was not plentiful.

I'm not comparing those teams/rosters, mind you. I'm comparing what took place. Hence me not feeling as dejected as I might have in 2023 where I couldn't believe we had come out so poorly against the Rangers and tried to play a completely different game to what got us there. Yesterday wasn't shocking to me to see what took place. I know our roster makeup, just as you and everyone else does. I know we're fighting an uphill battle. But if you want my honest answer to your question, I don't find fandom to be enjoyable if I cannot attempt to root on the team that I support to do what everyone assumes we can't. Does that make me a blind optimist? Feel free to label me what you want. But I would personally prefer to be that and concern myself with the offseason when we get there rather than repeat the same issues over and over again ad nauseam and ignore the fact that we're in the playoffs.

We might get waxed. 31 teams don't win the Cup every year. Some will say that means that my bar for success is incredibly low. But that doesn't mean I don't want the Cup. We're in the dance until we're not. I don't find any joy in venting my frustrations on what I think is wrong over and over again. Or ragging on Fitz for what I presume he could have done that he didn't do last summer or at the deadline. I'm more than content to see how this plays out and enjoy being at a playoff game on Friday for the first time since 2018 before I have to start focusing on what improvements the team needs to make in the offseason. Take that for whatever you wish.
We all see and approach things differently. I am still rooting for the team - I’ll be watching game 2 despite everything I say (and despite me turning off a playoff game for the first time ever yesterday - that’s how bad that was) because its what we do as fans, we don’t want to miss the chance to see the team win even if it’s highly unlikely.

That’s a completely separate thing to me from having a discussion about the team on a message board. This is a different experience where objective discussion and venting can and should be taking place. This is the place that serves as the counterpoint in my fandom - a forum where we can “keep it real”. I don’t want to be a blind optimist 100% of the time; I think it’s vital that fans keep some kind of objective perspective because otherwise, we are opening the door to being taken advantage of by poor management.

That’s just my perspective.

We're missing one forward, ONE. Sure it's a big one but this team is chock full of useless dog shit other than a couple of guys. It's painful to see what Fitz is doing with this team.

The Cotter-Glass-Sprong (3rd line mind you) line was particularly terrible.

They are going to need to split up Bratt, Hischier and Meier across the top 9, especially if Glass is out.

those first two rangers games were some of the worst hockey experiences i’ve ever had. yesterday doesn’t even come close.
No but from a team performance standard, this was actually far worse than that Game 1. If we had Markstrom in that game it’s probably 3 or 4-1 with an empty netter, if we had Vitek in this game it’s like 8-1. That was a goalie and special teams blowup, this was just being outworked and outclassed 1-20 and coaching.

The real comparison tbh is with Game 1 against Carolina…that was exactly like this only without still basking in the afterglow of a round one win.

As a fan this is not worse than those two games. I’m mentally prepared for this. We aren’t the better team and anyone paying attention knew this was bad matchup (especially in Carolina).

That team two years ago was better than the Rangers and that the spit the bit the first two games was incredibly frustrating.

I’m more prepared for this than most people here because I wasn’t in denial over what I’ve seen for most of the last two years and I’m still annoyed af…cause you still hope for and want to be pleasantly surprised, you want these ***** to show you some guts but they didn’t even meet the lowest bar you could possibly have for Game 1.

that team was way better than this one, had a much better season and had no injuries going in. getting blown out at home with ranger fans filling our building and cheering because our owners wanted to price out devils fans was infinitely worse than our mediocre injury riddled team no showing on the road

Fitz had two years to prepare for this and knew the matchup months in advance. That's a black mark on him.
He did nothing to prepare for anyone, he sat out the deadline till the last week when the Jack and Siegs injuries landed on his desk, so he basically boxed himself in to where at that point he shouldn’t do much apart from overpaying for Dumolin just to make sure we still stumbled into the playoffs

There’s no bigger indictment on Fitz than this. I’d wager a sizable reason for flipping the identity of the team was the brain damage the Canes gave him 2 years ago. Now here we are getting crushed by them even harder after a substantially worse regular season. It’s even worse when you consider that was a competitive series with Luke in the lineup. Sure there’s the Jack/Siegs excuse for this series but I don’t believe this series would be all that competitive with them in anyway.

The chefs kiss on top of it all is getting killed by Stankoven of all people.

That was the start of it, but last season kicked his mania into overdrive because of Matt Rempe (and, by extension, Tom Wilson).

now to be fair with the crying about fitz at the deadline. whenever someone was tied to being traded to the devils majority of the board didn't like this player because of age or price or need or previous production or a "rental" then fitz doesnt really get anyone and everyone flips out on him anyway. so he really was going to get slammed either way

like legit you guys are always looking for the perfect player the perfect contract the perfect situation. it aint going to happen

I watched the debacle using the game action as a break between replacing some electrical outlets during intermissions.

I was good and am still good with the deadline moves, because as we can see this team is so far removed from being a "few players away at the deadline to contend".

Dumo has helped in Siegs' absence, Glass, when healthy, provided C depth, and Sprong added at least something to the bottom-6 that was lacking (any whisper of offensive instinct).

Now, if they bungle the offseason I will have serious reservations.

I don't have a problem with the trade deadline. I have a problem that after two years post-getting whipped by this same team, and after months of knowing that this would be the exact matchup, the roster construction and team mentality is worse than it was before. Even the defensive structure has recently gotten to be as bad as it was last year.

Show this roster an ounce of adversity and they fold like a bad poker hand.

i've been saying that for 2 years now. leadership on this team doesn't exist but i'll get the nico fan club on me for saying that. i'll reserve judgement on this years playoffs until they are over

yeah i agree with this. they need to shed the bottom 6 move mercer down there get a legit top 6 option and send the softcore foundation players to a boot camp or something.

now as an example for the top 6 help you throw a name like boeser out there and immediately will get slammed hes this or that no thanks hard pass for this or that reason

Honestly, yesterday’s game was less stressful than some of the late season games.

Having a playoff berth was all I asked for this year. I think just a playoff berth was acceptable.

Some of the games later in the year were more anxiety riddled for me. We clinched I think over a week before our last game played with that Rangers loss to Tampa (I think?) but the Blue Jackets late season 6 game heater and the fact we lost 4 of 5 in regulation really made it close in the end.
