I'm not talking about MacDermid.

I meant the team needs a player that is a bit of a loose cannon like tom Wilson who would do some crazy shit once and awhile and keep people on their toes that he has no remorse injuring a guy, or some other guy of old who would do that. My3sons has been half joking about that. Other teams take ridiculous liberties with our players.

Seeing that clip of Bastian get clocked like that 5 times while he is facing the side and no real response the rest of the game, pretty sad state of affairs.

Lomberg is the one who cheapshotted cotter on the boards too to start that.

What is your thought to get the team to stop getting the raw end here?

We got the same situation as last season and Bastian taking the literal beat down or cheapshot or cheap fight. It's f***ed up. I'm guessing Bastian will be out awhile again. Just like with the rempe/Trouba hits/fight
I thought Brenden Dillon would have been filled that part🤔

Unless I missed it in an earlier post nobody wants to address the elephant in the room.

Lonborg plasters a Devils player against the boards, Bastian half-heartedly goes in to "stand up" for a teammate, and Lonborg demolishes him.

That's probably how a Flames fan would describe it. That was anything but a legal hockey play. It was 100% dirty

I agree team is more aggressive so far this season and it is likely because of Dillon and Noesen and Kovacevic etc.

I'm not saying there's a Tom Wilson esque player and lomberg on every team, but this team has to figure out something.

In the last 14 months you have:

-Bastian getting face blasted in an uneven fight setup with lomberg after Bas trying to defend Cotter (likely out some time TBD)
-Cotter getting head smashed into boards by lomberg after already down on the ice/boards
-Lazar taking a cheapshot low to the leg by Gudas (required knee or leg surgery)

Last season:
-Sieges getting headshot concussion by Rempe (out a month)
-Bastian fighting Trouba the same game after getting a basically a concussion after Rempe cheap hit (out for like a month)
-Bastian getting railroaded by Rempe headshot/charge (see above)
-a couple boards that were wreckless plays onto our team (Luke x2) one by Colorado
-Nico getting headshot by clifton (out for 20 games or something)
-Nosek taking a massive hit to the moon (although this was his fault) but no one really responded to Trouba (nosek out like a month)

I think I'm missing a few from last season.
Just never ends - but it needs to stop somehow.

Hard to win and stay healthy-ish if you have guys unable to set a strong persistent presence of team toughness.

If the impression around the league we are punching bags and/or weak to defend against cheapshots, they will just keep happening every season, like a roulette for different players.

I don't know how to quantify this to compare against what the rest of the league deals with, month to month, but it sure feels like NJD getting the raw end the last season and a half, and it needs to end (somehow with the team setting a presence or finding the right personnel to do this)

People/fans get upset at MacDermid on the roster, but I really understand the reaction of the team to at least have a heavyweight around to keep guys like Rempe not expecting a free for all every time they play us. At least Rempe has it in the back of mind that his face can get smashed a bit as a response when he plays against.

Based on what I've seen how teams handle it against the devils, I'd say they probably handle it better. One thing that comes to mind immediately is Barkov. The Panthers made it a mission to target Nico after that. There's been other incidents too I'm sure.

That is what this team needs to do. They need to target the other teams stars, but they never do and I just don't get it

Based on that "fight", id imagine Bastian's face or jaw is pretty f***ed up.

I sometimes feel your crazy psycho player theory on the team is needed to stop this.
It would stop the cheap shots and attempts to injure. It would force the players association to give a crap and thr league would care if the good players started getting hurt because of the complaints from the season ticket holders who would be pissed they have to watch teams devoid of talent because of all the sociopaths injuring the best players in an endless cycle of retribution. But last night wasn’t about thr fight. I’m just talking about the ability of a deck d guy to hit a guy already engaged eith someone.

Nine of this is hard. NFL players have to live with all these restrictions and they can’t fight. The NHL allowing cheap shots and the players having to police each other compared to the NFL is such an embarrassment. NFL officials are awful and do a better job controlling the games than NHL refs. It’s really pathetic and why the NHLPA is ok with this is beyond me. Are the players that stupid they don’t know they are being shit on by their own representatives?

Devils get pushed around and your solution is "tell the principal"? That has never been the way to deal with bullies. Please don't turn hockey into major league baseball.
Then why have any rules? Why not just give them sticks send them out with no refs and whatever happens happens? Either there are rules that are malleable or there are no rules.

they started squared up. It was Bastian himself who turned to face the boards. Beause he took a punch while trying to get his glove off. Then made it worse by continuing to turn into the boards and not fighting back at all. Lombard did nothing dishonorable there.
Cmon nate was injured by the first punch. The linesmen were clueless and should have stepped in quicker when nate was not able to defend himself. I also saw one angle where lomberg appeared to say he wouldn’t go but then started throwing quick lefts. If I read that correctly that is a trash move

But you are absolutely right and tonight watching NHL highlights on TV, the extent to which the fights were being replayed every bit as much as the goals shocked and embarrassed me. Plus replays of a Montreal or Nashville player getting speared in the balls.

The league has a major problem of its own making. They are marketing this as a prime element of the NHL brand but no serious athletic competition can endure this level of extra curricular violence. Hockey is a beautiful game and they are turning it into a cross between professional wrestling and roller derby. It cheapens the game and at this extreme begins to render it ridiculous. Enforce the rules and stop the brawling.

N.B. edit - but the “rules” - by measuring out penalties for fighting instead of just ejecting people as in Basketball, actually contemplate and allow for fist fighting. That is the problem.

NFL players manage to not engage in nearly as many cheap shots as NHL players and as bad as the NFL refs are they manage to call the roughing and headshots to a greater degree than NHL refs. It’s embarrassing. I expect the odd big hit and fight but what’s going on now isn’t that.

We have fans (not just this team but all teams) arguing about the 'honor' behind a response or fight and how that should dictate further actions...

Meanwhile you have Kevin Bieksa saying most hockey players expect an 'eye for an eye' and even coaches putting guys out at ends of games so other teammates dont get hurt for actions that werent theres (in response to Slafkovsky's injury tonight vs Pittsburgh)

Its clear that a lot of fans dont have much idea of the visceral nature of the sport if they are commenting that Bastian's fight was good enough and thats it.

Florida hasn't forgotten the ACCIDENTAL hurting of Barkov by Nico for multiple seasons; but we are supposed to forget a bad hit or elbow on Cotter, two games this season, because Bastian and Dillon started a fight afterwards

Its the liberal nature of fans that should be kept to themselves and not marched around as some moral high-ground; one that most current or former players would never agree with.

The Devils will figure this out, whether the fans like it or not; otherwise they'll be losing guys to injuries and constantly being picked on with cheap shots because the opposing teams know they wont do shit about it

Edit: heres where someone probably chimes in that Bieksa is dirty and thats not the case; as their team gets their asses handed to them yet again
