Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

Glass at 4C and nothing more. I don't know if I am that comfortable with Haula on L3 either.

That bottom 6 is trash still - we can't go in with that next season.

I mean, lol 3 out of 6 of those bottom 6 guys had 15 plus goals. I'm not sure that qualifies as trash.

The Devils need a 3rd line. Cotter-Glass-Noesen is a more then acceptable, and when playing well an above average 4th line.

Bratt-Hughes-Mercer
Palat-HIschier-Meier
________-__________-_________
Cotter-Glass-Noesen

This is before any upgrades. Mercer and/or Palat could see themselves on the 3rd line.

I'd love Ehlers or Bennett. Both would be great adds. I don't see Florida letting Bennett walk. But..

Bratt-Hughes-Gritsyuk
Palat-Hischier-Meier
Ehlers-Bennett-Mercer
Cotter-Glass-Noesen
MacDermid

Hamilton is traded for space and Haula as well.
Sprong, Tatar, Lazar, Bastian. Dowling gone as well.

Duchene probably re-signs with the Stars and Tavares with the Maple Leafs. Bennett probably wants to be a top 6 center and he gets more money elsewhere. Nelson, same thing (he also seems to be washed-up). Suter is good but slow.

I'd like Ehlers but the Devils probably don't have enough money for him either. Kuzmenko... I don't know, he is a better version of Gusev, but I'm not a fan. Other options: Granlund (already 33), Donato, Boeser (too slow and expensive), Palmieri (34), and Frederic (he would be a good option).

Fitzgerald has a lot of work to if he wants to find a 3C for the team. A trade might be the best way to solve the problem, but I'm not sure who is available.

After Ehlers abd Bennett for me there is nobody in free agency that stands out. Maybe Donato. I think there be two or three trades for forwards. Obviously, with defensemen involved.

Kuzmenko is the guy I go after, but I don't see LA letting him go.
Kuzmenjo is nice offensive player with very good hands but he is slow with no defense. May be its a right addition for less money to make our offensive depth better if money are not big. But im not so sure about him.

Ehlers-Bennett duo is unreal because of cap reasons. They will ask a lot.

meh, I don't really care about defense with these UFA forwards....they are all going to have their warts. We have enough guys who are solid enough defensively, while we desperately need more offense and creativity.

Ehlers has been one of my favorite players for awhile now, but I am not sure that is who we should be targeting, and that is even before talking about the contract he is likely to get.

It’s going to be tough to fit in some of these guys with the cap.

I think the most realistic targets are guys like Mangiapane, Mantha, and Beauvillier. The first two definitely had some productive seasons in the past, but the big issue here is they’re likely not much better than the Haula’s, Palat’s, and Noesen’s the Devils have been trotting out there.

The contracts this off-season are going to be ugly with the cap going up. I’m not sure people are prepared for how much some of these guys are going to get paid.

I’ve seen you mention Mantha a couple of times, but he hasn’t played since the first week of November. I had to look it up because I haven’t heard his name since early in the year. I actually forgot what team he played for. I was thinking Utah, but it was Calgary. He only played 13 games before getting injured for the rest of the year and never returning.

Not sure if he’s close to recovered, but he had ACL surgery and never played again this year.

I’d have to think he’s gonna be pretty slow, and he was already really slow before that.

I believe with Luke, Nico deals on the horizon(and Quinns deal) Fitz should think twice about new contracts he will sign from the market. Bennet will sign for more than he is impacting. Ehlers? I believe he will be a good addition but I dont know what he is waiting from the market - something like Fiala had or something more. He isnt that young really. On the other hand he is very good offensive driver even for your "second" wave.

We dont know what Kuzmenko is looking. He had very good stretches, especially his full time in LA. He was great with Petterson on the line and its not like it was only because of Petterson, but he was the player who made Petterson better and Petterson was the player who made Kuzmenko better. We have a couple of center to play with him. But the price is the biggest question. If he will ask something like 5.5-6.5 mil for 4-5 years - it could make our offense really better... but again. Kuzmenko is righty. Bratt is playing with Jack on the right side and I dont see a good match between Kuzmenko and Hischier.
If they are ready to play Tmo-Nico-Bratt and Palat/Gritsyuk-Jack-Kuzmenko lines... Im not sure about it. They need at least one Coleman type of a player to play with Jack on the line if they want to maximize his outcome.
So again - Im not so sure about Kuzmenko. Ehlers could be a better match here, but again - the price is the biggest question and he will absolutely try to cash.

Your roster is not cap compliant. Try again.

Yup, Chandler Stephenson looks better and better each offseason. Wait till we find out how much Bennett and Ehlers go for. Our GM is a clown. Never replaced MM and now we have to suffer by trading Casey+ when it could have just been $6.25M per year and no Dillon.

Before you joke on your breakfast, $6M is no longer 1D money. It’s top 9 money in 2025.

It would be if with Hamilton and Haula gone as well. I don't get into cap talk. I don't want to pretend i'm an expert but in my mind the cap is so maneuverable and easy to get around in todays' NHL I do not even consider it a factor (within reason). The fact that Shea Weber got traded again this past deadline tells us all we need to know about the Salary Cap and all the loop holes. I can promise you if a GM wants someone enough, they can and will figure it out.

IF you want contracts fine:

Ehlers 6 years 6.5 mill NTC
Bennett - 5 years 5.5 mill.

does he really though? he's a black hole on defense, replacement level on offense and is probably in ondrej palat buyout territory in a year.

I guarantee if you give kraken brass some truth serum they want a do-over on that contract

No matter how many times you say it, this doesn't make it true.

Let's not get into Elias Lindholm either.

I listened to the 32 Thoughts postmortem, and I think Elliott's points were all agreeable.

I don't want the Devils holding the bag on a Sam Bennett overpay, especially with that injury history. Ehlers will also command top dollar, but he might be that top six winger we need, so I wouldn't be shocked to see Fitz make a run at him. I want proven bottom six muscle in either a trade or a signing, that's the clear need.

You still haven't given a name of a better option to replace Fitz. You want a GM gone that has made the playoffs two of the 3 years but cannot provide a single solitary name of a qualified replacement.
