Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

Daws as the backup to an aging and inconsistent Markstrom sounds like a recipe for disaster. We’ve seen this movie before.

We don’t need a world beater behind Keefe’s defense, just a guy who isn’t a million years old who has proven he can be competent (unlike Daws). Maybe give more of a split between Markstrom and that guy.

Lol. You think? Thanks for the insite Erik. And water is wet.

Daws isn’t very good. 5 NHL starts last year be damned. His AHL season was bad.

The rest of his NHL body of work leaves a lot to be desired. I honestly think Schmid is better, but even he sucks in the NHL.

Next season could wind up going the way the 2 other seasons with Daws getting significant NHL minutes went, if he gets significant NHL minutes.

And then there’s nothing behind him if something happens to Markstrom.

I will say this about the Quinn situation. Having all three brothers on the team will likely culminate in a very polarizing legacy - they either bring a cup to NJ and write one of the great NHL stories or they fail to meet lofty expectations and the “nepotistic” roster construction will be seen as a stain on the franchise.

I dont think it was necessarily an over correction as much as luckily hitting on Mirco Muelleresque former high draft pick reclamation projects, while Casey and Nemec surprised him by not really being ready.

There's a pretty good puckmoving component to Nemec and Casey's a witch. Pesce and Dillon were absolutely necessary moves to a shit show blueline last year for stability sake.

He probably was thinking Hughes Hamilton Nemec/Casey coupled with Pesce Dillon Siegs as the plan.

I agree with your point tho, but I get a little ill at the idea of adding another fancy blueline piece when we are missing six players on the forward core and have at least eight solid dmen already.
I also look at the team from 22/23 and the back end on that end put up roughly 40 points more than this group. However that could be system based. I think a lot of the 5 on 5 issues were the lack of puck movers on the back end and an empathizes on just lobbing the puck to the neutral zone and doing it all over again.

Luke really got comfortable moving the puck toward the end of the season. Nemec hopefully this playoff gives him confidence going into next year and Casey is still a wild card on if he can even defend in his own end.

Depending on cost etc, a chance to get Quinn is probably something you can’t pass up

Yeah cool how about calling out how average it is like 3 months ago instead of when it’s already over?

This is the same guy who wears a “Carolina sucks” bracelet while playing on a team that gets routinely bitched by them and offering nothing on the ice to turn that tide. He can take a hike with his cringy accessories.

We could definitely find a better player then Palat for less then $6 mil.

His production with Jack was OK, but he was a drag on that lines effectiveness. His production away from jack was abysmal.

What is the cost to replace him AND what is the cost to pay the replacement? Can we realistically replace Palat this offseason? I’m unsure.

Sorry, a Markstrom/Daws tandem next year would terrify me.

Unfortunately the UFA crop of goalies looks awful. I would try and bring Allen back if he doesn't price us out.
For all of Fitz’s faults, if he willingly went into next season with that tandem then that’s the one thing we can absolutely skewer him for. Because he should have known better.

I’m willing to cut costs elsewhere if we can have someone a little more proven at backup.

And by elsewhere that means Nemec getting a spot on D rather than re-signing Dumoulin. This also assumes Dillon actually is done.

We should be able to get by with Nemec playing/the current D corps we have right now much smoother than what could be a disaster if Daws is the backup or forced into more games because Markstrom is old and injured again.

Is Allen in a position to price us out? If anything term could be the issue.

I think you let Allen walk and have Daws be the full-time backup next year. Give Markstrom and Daws a 70/30 split this year, then bring back Markstrom on a 1 year ~3M deal to be Daws's backup in 2027.

By that time we hopefully have Yegorov in the pros being 1-2 years away from making the roster.
Its dangerous. Markstrom is old and he wasnt healthy. In this situation we will be one injury away from Daws\Poulter duo.

What is the cost to replace him AND what is the cost to pay the replacement? Can we do both this offseason?
The cost to get rid of him? That's the real dilemma. We may want to bring him back because the cost to shed him would be too high.

But strictly finding a guy who could be more effective for less money? Don't think it would be that difficult.

I don’t understand what there is to be high on Nico Daws about anyway.

Because he had a good 5 starts in the NHL and looked okay but not worst goalie ever levels the other two years he played in the league?

so far he’s shown to be a good third stringer.

The only reason Schmid even got to play as many games as he did in 22-23 was because Blackwood got injured. We haven’t handed a goalie as unproven/as bad as Daws the backup job since Marty was 37 years old. Unless you count when we started the 14-15 season with Clemmensen and then went to an inexperienced Kinkaid to backup Cory.

Sieg's and Kova were both guys who put up numbers which suggested they could be strong defensive minded d-men. Neither guy was a high pick like Mirco was either.

I also think both guys benefited from the team playing such a conservative style. We've been bagging on everyone this side of 3 guys for their lack of offense. Well some of that is by design. We went all in on being a defense first team.

Not trying to be argumentative(I know how sensitive you can be;)). Just an interesting topic for discussion. Maybe moreso the latter point.

I wouldn't love or hate Daws being the backup next year (I'd still probably err towards bringing Allen back), but I think holding previous bad seasons against a guy that young is sort of silly. It's called development. Younger players grow and get better. Daws certainly looked better in the NHL this year than he did in previous years. That's what you want to see. Eventually you gotta take a chance on young guys on low contracts in a cap league.
