Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

Some talk on NHL Network on Sirius today about NJ getting Quinn. Said we should get aggressive now. The later it goes the less Vancouver will get. Also said with the turmoil in Vancouver they should be tanking hard for McKenna, the example was: 'Ask NJ for something like Nemec + Mercer + 1st, then whatever you get for players, move those for another pick'

Interesting

You’re contradicting yourself. If you can’t make up that difference through the bottom six, how the hell are you making the team better by trading one of the team’s only high end point producers for depth?
I'm not contradicting myself at all...Two good middle 6 wingers would increase goal production there is no doubt in mind of that....It's not hard to replace Bratt's goal production while also adding elements that are missing from our top 6.

Didn't Brady have like 15 even strength goals? 3 more 5v5 goals totally make up for the 40+ more meaningless assists that Bratt put up.
You don't get Brady for just production...you get him because he's going stir shit up, punch someone in the mouth, crash the net and score 30 goals while being a clear leader on the ice.....you know, the things absolutely void of this team

Best we can do is Hamilton + Haula + 1st. Take it or leave it.

Eh I don’t like this “easy simple” analysis. Of course that had a huge impact on the series. But we have an entire season of observations that tells us this team has major holes and question marks going forward.
I believe they were simplifying why the playoffs went the way they did

I rather have Boeser and Suter

Beyond all of the very stupid Jesper Bratt talk, the reason not to trade him is that Bratt gets better every offseason. He works on something deficient in his game and improves it. Chances are this offseason it will be his shooting.
His 5v5 goal scoring has gone down for 4 consecutive years.

Edit 3 consecutive years... sorry.

I'm gonna be real with you. Out of every player on NJDs roster right now, Dumoulin is the one I least expect to be here next year. I would be genuinely shocked to see him back

Lazar, Bass, Dowling, Sprong, Tatar I could all very well see as either a healthy scratch or the 12th forward.
Glass very easy to see him being brought back.
Anyone under contract for obvious reasons, especially given the supposed "guys to be traded" have protections.
Allen is easy to justify if you want

But dumo? a 33 year old rental dman when you HAVE 7 other dman who all need a lineup spot already?

In terms of dougie. It comes down to this. NJD's biggest problem this year was scoring goals? correct?

When dougie hamilton was on the ice, NJD scored 4.7 goals/60 (yes I know all situations is lazy but the point is to show his PP and EV at once and I'm too lazy to screenshot both rn. That was the best in the league among dmen by a significant margin. Makar was 2 at 4.4.

How in the world does getting rid of that fix that problem of goal scoring.

It doesn't, but we hope the young dman take a step foward.

We need to fix the depth and we need cap space to do it.

If we don't, we'll replace the UFAs with the same type of fringe players and have the same result.

I actually don't think it is that complicated to diagnose. We need better depth. I think a majority of the issues stem from that. Actually fixing the problem is where it gets complicated between having the cap space and assets to acquire needed depth, and making sure you target the right players. Hopefully Fitz makes the proper assessment amd doesn't double down on the "hard to play against" strategy.

If we were to trade for Quinn, we would have to trade a left handed Dman the other way. If it was Nemec plus then we have Both Hughes Borthers Siegenthaler and Dillon.

Casey and Siegenthaler plus a 1st might be the trade. Dillon has a No trade clause and Vancouver would want Siegs instead.

I'd prefer to wait until Quinn is a free agent.

I agree - They also mentioned that they could just sell him this summer wherever they get the best deal with that team knowing it's probably a 2 year lease but are willing to take that chance.

Bottom line for me is that they assumed a trade this summer would be best for Vancouver and there would be a decent chance that it happens.

yea i probably do that.

Though we are only guaranteed 2 years of Quinn. Cause then he's UFA. In theory he could bounce after that. So maybe you use that as leverage if you want to lower the price.

You figure with all this dumb media comments, we should be able to get 85 cents to the dollar on trade value. If its implied he ONLY wants to come here.

You don't get Bratt for just production...you get him because he's going drive the game up, take the puck into offensive zone, crash the defense and create tonns of chances(translated into the assist rate because people are scoring from this creativeness)) while being a silent leader on the ice. And he is winning puck battles even against guys like Brady Tkachuk. Without being ugly faced and ugly defensively like Brady.

So you mean nothing that Jack doesn't do better?

Jack being injured though is a huge part of our problem. He was injured the last time we played them in the playoffs as well.

As per Svech, ya it was his first good series(edit: no it wasn't see below), but it was really good and it came against us. He scored 5 goals in 5 games. Bratt has 2 career playoff goals in 18 games played. Do I think he's better then Bratt? No. Am I going around acting like our top guys are better then Carolina's? Nah, that's a hollow argument to make at this point.

Oh and I just looked. Svech was a ppg in 11 playoff games last year as well. 20 goals in 56 playoff games. He just turned 25, nearly 2 years younger then Bratt.

Issue with the Canes guys is they cherry picked or destroyed their Rd 1 opponents under Rod points wise and then disappeared in playoffs later on. Svech and Aho were mediocre/bad in both NYR series in 22/24, bad in the Florida/NJ series in 2023.

it's true. Taylor Hall is pretty ugly. Brady looks like a toe nail
