Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

While I believe this is his last game as a Devil, and he was basically shit on unanimously when aquired, Dumoulin was absolutely fantastic for us. I'd really love to keep him but don't see how he can't get a better contract elsewhere.

If I’m Keefe, I’m probably pounding the table to Fitz to find a way to keep him. He brought more than I ever would have imagined, and I was one of the few who approved of the trade despite the cost.

The consensus was he did well in Anaheim in a more reduced role compared to the year before in Seattle where he struggled in an elevated role. I know it was a small sample here, but his calm demeanor back there really did wonders for us in this series.

I'd explore every avenue for moving Dillon or telling him he's going to be an expensive 7th D.

Absolutely NOT advocating they trade Bratt for Quinn, but this is undeniably brutal...

It is pretty deniable. The first real playoff run everyone was goalied by Igor for the most part. That’s why Timo had 0 points in that series.

The PP was 0 for the series in this one. You’re not putting up many points in a 5 game stretch with 0 PP goals.

Here is my ideal lineup for next year:

1XX-J. Hughes-Bratt
2XX-Hischier-Meier
Mercer-3XX-Gritsyuk
Cotter-Glass-Noesen

L. Hughes-Pesce
Siegenthaler-Nemec
4XX-Kovacevic

Idk what happens with Palat, because I really don't see how they'll be able to dump all of Hamilton, Haula, and him in one offseason.

Obviously the hope is that Grits can move up to 1XX or 2XX, but I think it would be a mistake to just assume he can fit there.

4XX obviously depends on Dillon. If he is good to go, it'll be him (as much as I'd like to move on from him).

the other wrench into this is if Quinn is really made available and forces his way here this summer. Obviously, you don't want to give up a ton of high-end assets for a guy who is probably coming anyways, but getting him here ASAP would be obviously best for the franchise.

Let’s see what Dillon’s injury is. If there’s any semblance truth to rumors out there, Dillon could potentially be done anyway. Not that I want that to be true.

Playoffs to me showed alot: Baseline for what I want next season.

xxxxx - Jack - Bratt
Timo - Nico - xxxxxx
Palat - xxxxxx - Grits
Cotter - Glass - Noeson

Luke - Pesce
Siegs - Kovy
Dumo - Nemec
Casey

Markstrom
Daws

Dougie just doesnt have it, if we can only drop 1 big contract between Palat and him, Ill take Dougie to be dealt. Dumo is 100% dependent on the Dillon stuff. Also totally done with Mercer, dont think his contract is even that bad, he just underwhelms me everytime I watch him.

Pls dont force Grits into a top 6 role right away, I doubt hes totally ready.
I think that defense is not mobile or productive enough. If Dillon is done or can be jettisoned, I’d look to fill that spot with someone who is more versatile than just being a “stay at home”. No idea how realistic that is though with all the other needs at forward.

Team feels close but also so far away from contending.

I'm going to keep saying it until he's gone but Haula is no longer an NHL player. He proved it all year and I had some hope he would step up in the playoffs like he did before. Nope. He was embarrassing and awful. Worse than ever. I can't handle watching him for another game.
For the longest time I figured it would make more sense to keep Haula and boot Palat, but I’ve had a change of heart in the last 48 hours. Palat can probably be serviceable at the bottom of the lineup. Haula showed he can’t do a single thing no matter what. If we have to keep one it’s gotta be Palat.

Cant help but keep replaying Fitz at the start of the year when asked about scoring help saying something to the effect of " Im not worried about the scoring", and then to have this year pan out the way it did....

Ok with moving on from him.

I can’t wrap my head around people wanting Mercer traded (and apparently Bratt??) when the team’s biggest need is forward depth. Makes absolutely no sense. It just sounds like emotional reaction to the fact that he hasn’t panned out as a reliable top six option.

Putting him on the third line with actual good players would more than suffice for this team. Maybe we even get lucky and he rediscovers his game from a couple of years ago.

Mercer's value to other teams is greater than to ours. He's had two down years in a row, he can't play center, he's a better player than what he is showing here. It's time to move on.

Well one of the usual suspects said they'd trade Bratt for depth and Mercer which shows you how stupid some of our fanbase is. You trade the teams leading scorer, from a team starving for goals, and "depth", for me depth.

Depth is this team’s greatest need…so we trade a forward who’s good enough to play in the middle six for…what exactly? How does this improve our biggest need?

You get a similar player from another team. When the Devils traded Zacha for Haula, they were also trading like for like - they got a different player who fulfilled a different function. That is the kind of trade they would be making with Mercer.

Sometimes players plateau in a given place and need to breakthrough elsewhere. Godspeed to Mercer, he's not likely doing it here.

Mercer seems like the most movable piece for a forward upgrade. Or a piece you’d logically expect to be in a Quinn trade. I’m not dealing him for futures, but we haven’t gotten a whole lot from him for a couple seasons now.

I'm not saying to trade bratt but to say he had a good series or a good game yesterday is a total joke. i dont care what stupid advanced stats your going to throw around. the guy was a no show last night hardly noticeable when the team needed him the most in the series at different points. playoff no show so far in his career.

nico took his game to another level which is what you want to see. cant say the same for bratt.

people bashing markstrom for last night thats fine i get it two soft goals but he made up for it with big stops at the end of regulation and then in overtime. honestly dont take so many penalties when you pk is horrible. was he perfect? no but he wasn't the reason we lost the game or the series

the hughes brothers have to do some type of training this off season i dont know what can be done but you can't go 82 games and hold your breath anytime one of them falls down. you can't build a roster around someone who might an entire season with any one of the 30 falls a game he has. so something has to change with them and their approach.

mercer is a bottom 6 player at this point i'm fine keeping him as long as thats where he stays and thats where he plays. you aren't getting much for him and your just going to have to replace him with another player if you trade him so hes a good age and good value contract keep him bottom 6. get some top line talent and move everyone down in the lineup thats what missing.

Guys who proved they shouldn't be on this team next year are Lazar, Dowling, Bastian, Tatar, and Haula. I'd bring back Sprong. Pencil Glass in as 3C but ideally he's 4C. Cotter stunk as well but he's at least serviceable. The rest of them brought nothing to the table.

The postmortem by ownership has got to focus on the collective dip post holiday break. Really strange.

I don’t know about Fitz. I think the failure of this year really does lie with him.
