Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

I'm gonna bitch about losing Toffoli over and over again. HUGE mistake.

He was slow and kinda old but the guy could finish. Exactly what this team needed and instead we pissed away money on 74 defensemen of questionable talent when we have a decent pipeline.

Pesce was fine. We didn't need him AND Dillon AND Kovacevic
Toffoli sucks and had zero desire to ever bring him back. Way overpaid and only makes us even slower

Honestly it's probably time for a new GM, I just don't have any faith left in Fitzgerald at this point. We have so much cap tied up in absolute dross that it's going to be a multi-year process to retool this roster, I'd rather someone new take a crack at it rather than watch Fitz repeat the same mistakes yet again.

Markstrom @ $4.125m x 1 year
Hamilton @ $9m x 3 years
Palat @ $6m x 2 years
Dillon @ $4m x 2 years
Haula @ $3.15m x 1 year

That's $26.275m of our cap tied up on two fourth liners (Palat & Haula), a 6/7th defender (Dillon), an injury prone 2nd pairing defender (Hamilton) and an unreliable backup goaltender. The icing on the s***-cake is that the average age of those five players is 34, so in addition to them all being essentially unmovable and producing far below their cap hits, they're liable to get even worse next year.

The playoff experience is going to do alot for Nemec. He looked like he belonged 100%. The logjam on defense is a good thing to have but, harder to get him in the lineup. Next season he will be on the main roster all year. I hope he puts in the work this offseason and focuses on working on his skating. He might not be an elite point producer but he very well can be a solid well rounded #2/#3 defensman.

Also Seamus Casey is going to be a good one for us. It's a shame he barely touched the ice in the 3rd period and overtime. I get what Keefe was doing by going with his veterans. I feel like Casey could of helped this team out though. I think that 1 blunder where he got caught flat footed on the powerplay was what did him in. We see that happen to Hamilton and other players at times but, that doesn't get them benched....

Playoffs to me showed alot: Baseline for what I want next season.

xxxxx - Jack - Bratt
Timo - Nico - xxxxxx
Palat - xxxxxx - Grits
Cotter - Glass - Noeson

Luke - Pesce
Siegs - Kovy
Dumo - Nemec
Casey

Markstrom
Daws

Dougie just doesnt have it, if we can only drop 1 big contract between Palat and him, Ill take Dougie to be dealt. Dumo is 100% dependent on the Dillon stuff. Also totally done with Mercer, dont think his contract is even that bad, he just underwhelms me everytime I watch him.

Pls dont force Grits into a top 6 role right away, I doubt hes totally ready.
I’m tired of seeing Daws as backup in potential lineups.

Reeks of Vanecek/Schmid 2.0.

Daws was horrible in the AHL and hasn’t been good in the NHL, except for 5 measly games this year, where he looked like complete trash last game he played.

He’s shown to be a good third stringer.

Too much of a gamble if he’s the backup. Especially when the inevitable Markstrom injury happens.

Issue is they need to cut cost somewhere, Allen will be gone elsewhere and he legit might get a starter deal somewhere with how good he played. I agree that the Daws thing could hurt them but at this point they've made their bed in that regard. I also trust this Devils team to play more defensive in front of Daws than maybe the Devils teams in the past with the horrendous goaltending. That'll be up to Fitz to fix them up front on the skaters tho.

Daws also played more then fine in the games when Marky was hurt

You can upgrade at the deadline if it doesnt work
I think the Markstrom inconsistency with both play and health has swayed me that we need a very good backup, which I think what Jake Allen was this season. I would offer him a one year deal to bring him back, and if he declines, I would still go to the market for a proven backup.

I rather not give Daws the backup role just for the purpose of saving $1m in cap. I like him as our number 3.

I really want Tom gone. He’s a grade up f*** up and moron. Truly a dog shit GM.

I also want the entire scouting and the rest of Toms management staff gone. They draft like shit.

Also fire our strength and conditioning coaches / team or what ever they are. This teams conditioning is a joke which is why they can’t ever win back to backs and then tonight looked like a team of 40 year old beer leaguers drunk off their ass.

Just pathetic.

Keefe should also be in a short leash. He coached like shit a lot of this series and season.

Not knowing when to replace a goalie, running 4 lines non stop. Tonight his dumbass had that dog shit can’t skate worth a damn 4th line out there in a tied elimination game with 3 mins and they got hemmed in. Load up Bratt, Timo and Nico to end it.

Also, Nico was fine, but man what a fall off he had in OT. We need another center, a high end 3C low end 2.

This team can’t rely on Jack not being a bandaid boy. Goes back to drafting like shit, we could have one but toms dumb.

If giving up Bratt is the price to pay to get Quinn, then Quinn can just stay in Vancouver.

Absolutely NOT advocating they trade Bratt for Quinn, but this is undeniably brutal...

Playoff ghost.

I’d also trade him for Quinn in a heartbeat. Quinn could put up insane numbers with Jack, Nico and Timo. Quinn put up 76 points with a bad offensive Canucks team.

This team needs puck moving dmen. Thankfully he’s more than that. He’s a hart level player on the backend.

That said, it wouldn’t take Bratt. It would be probably our d prospects, Mercer, some picks, maybe another roster player worth a damn.

I get people are upset but calling Hamilton a 2nd pairing defender and Markstrom a backup goalie sure is something. Yes, it was not worth giving up what Fitz did for Markstrom but he's absolutely a starting goalie. Yes, it's time to move on from Dougie now, but he was a top d-man when he was signed.

The moves I'd nail him on are Dillon, and Markstrom as distant 2nd

If it's 100% true Quinn wants to play with his bros, you do whatever it takes to get him, even if it pisses some fans off. Outside of Jack and Nico(?) everyone is expendable.

Don't mean to be that guy, but also Luke...to fit your narrative. Quinn ain't coming here if Luke or Jack is gone.

I don't see how they get 2 top 6 wingers that are actual top 6 wingers. Both because how crappy the ufa pool is this offseason but also because they have no cap space or assets. Gritsyuk is probably going to have to play top 6.

Leafs/Penguins fan who follows all 32 teams coming in peace. Watched a decent amount of the game tonight. Painful stuff. Also was lurking this thread and the GDT.

My idea(s) for Devils:

Hamilton to Sharks for Desharnais (1 year #7 D) + 4th round pick + $6.5m cap space
Haula + 5th to Kraken for Burakovsky (2 yrs $5.5m middle 6 winger) + 3rd

OUT:
Hamilton + Haula + 5th
IN:
Burakovsky + Desharnais + 3rd + 4th + $4.15m cap space

Meier Hughes Bratt
( UFA ) Hischier Noesen
Palat (Mercer/UFA) Burakovsky
Cotter Glass (Mercer/UFA)
13th forward
14th forward

Hughes Pesce
Siegenthaler Kovacevic
(Dillon/replacement) - Nemec
7th D = Desharnais

Goalies IDK, I assume Markstrom Daws but do whatever.

Make more trades on top of this too, sure.

Not here to argue or debate anybody. Strictly coming in peace. Just wanted to drop my musings and go back to lurking more or less.

I don't think that's all that bad. Some people here are expecting these guys to just be a ppg immediately in the playoffs when that's not realistic for most players. Not everyone is McDavid. He's had 3 playoff rounds (1 of which was with a bunch of ahl players). In 3 playoff rounds, Matt Tkachuk had 5 points (in 15 games). No one is gunna talk about him being a bad playoff player now right? I don't remember the situation with Boldy and the Wild but in his first two playoffs he had 4 points in 12 games (only 1 goal). In his third playoffs, with a fully healthy Kaprizov, he's producing much more and looks completely dominant.

This is why I kept going on and on about this team needing to get to the playoffs consistently sooner than later. It takes time for these players to get to the level they need to be.

The good news from what I've seen is the core players are fine, just need to get some more games in. The rest of the team needs a complete overhaul though. The depth is complete crap

Overall happy with this season. Would have felt better if the highs were spread out instead of being first half good, second half bad. Need to become a regular playoff team and they at least accomplished a step towards that this year. i think a lot of fans are being a little too reactionary about a result we all knew was coming, but maybe I’ll feel the same way if next season ends in a whimper as well. Got a summer to make some changes, shed a little dead weight salary and hope to find a diamond in the rough and get back to scoring next year.
