Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

I assume this is Haatka signing overseas? Not that out of left field when he didn’t get a sniff of NHL action all year and wasn’t claimed or traded for by anyone else. The timing of announcing it is interesting but I guess he’s really not on the short list to play despite all the current injuries

Yeah, if he's not being trusted to get into the lineup now then he arguably has zero pathway to getting in. He'll probably play a year or two in Europe, tear it up and then come back here. He's a decent 3LHD. We're just stacked to the gills defensively.

I really hope this rumor is wrong. Would be such an awful life changing injury. Hope to hear some good news about his status and that it's just a "normal" injury.

After watching the video of Dillon trying to get up twice and falling in exactly the same fashion where both legs just gave out it's doubtful it's a normal injury.

Hatakka was not going to be tendered an offer in June, he would've been a UFA. Maybe in some alternate universe the Devils get a similarly injury-prone AHL forward from someone for him, but that seems unlikely.

Shame because if not for injury, he could've maybe played in this league full time.

Its more of a fan's idea to replace Hamilton with Casey than it is reality; could happen but what are those odds? Would take a lot of balls and a level of insanity to go from a Norris vote-receiving veteran to a <10GP rookie

This also ties into why Casey may not get into the game at all. Rookies dont get those opportunities over veterans 9/10 times, right or wrong

Plus what does that do for Casey if he checks in for one game and turns over the puck on the PP, and we lose 1-0 because of it? Silly hypothetical but as an example I think it suffices; its unfair to him as well

He ended up skating and walking off by himself at the end so hopefully that's a good sign. By "normal" injury I just mean I hope it's something he can come back from for his every day life. A spinal injury that's that bad that could be career ending is so life changing. He's only 34, has two really small kids, one just born a few months ago.

Just really hoping these rumors are wrong more because of how much his it will affect his life, the getting back on the ice stuff is whatever.

With Hamilton clearly not 100%, Casey is our best available offensive dman. The team has struggled to score in this series, with only 7 goals, including 0 on the PP.

Canes betting odds are at -7000, we need a miracle to get back in this series, and putting in a guy who can generate offense like him can be a catalyst.

It might fail, it might succeed. Either way, it would be an invaluable experience for him, instead of giving Cholowski 8 minutes again.

I dont disagree with any of this. The optics are a bit wonky but thats fine. Issue is how these players are handled not only effects themselves but each other and even players on other teams (when you consider future signings or trades)

And its a hard sell to the team, Id think

Casey should get some experience but, odds are, hes going to anyway next season or 26-27; hes only 21

Damn. Watching him struggle to get up and then fall on his own twice like that is scary stuff. Was nice to see him skate off without much assistance. That has to (hopefully) rule out any severe spinal injury and is more muscle / ligament damage that can heal up without any long term effects.

You think its a hard sell to the team to play him over Cholowski? Casey's been a devil longer than he has, and is very obviously the better player

To me it looks like he leaned in and his chin clipped Martinook's elbow - I wonder if that's what led to the jello legs?

Ah yeah I could see that - I'd start him off on PP2 and then see how he looks and maybe give him a shot on the top unit if he seems to be feeling it and Dougie keeps struggling.

he should be on the top unit regardless, Dougie is useless without his shot and Casey can open lanes with his stick handling which is what you need against an aggressive PK like Carolina

I gotta ask- are you related to seamus casey?

I feel like every time I see a post from you it's somehow mentioning him 😂

No, its just such a ridiculous thing to keep a talent like that out of the lineup to play Dennis Cholowski that I can't stop thinking about it.

I've been a big fan of his since before he was a devil.
