Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

The only thing that would annoy me about a miracle revival is it would kick off a certain segment of the fanbase gloating that we're better without the Hugheses running things lol
There is merit to the fact that the game gets simplified in certain ways when they’re not on the ice. Which can lead to a little more straight forward attack.
But yea this current roster would be better with Jack and/or Luke. Even I can say that.

But they occasionally do play better without them, and I think it’s just a simplification of play style.

Fitz patiently awaiting his apologies for the Dumoulin trade.

Who wants a hot take?

Is our defense playing defense better without Luke? Lol hmmm
Luke has likely been playing broken down for a really long time. I can't even remember the first time this season where he looked like he was for sure to leave a game, only to come back even before it ended. He did it again in game 1, but he was out for game 2. I wanna say that's happened 4 times this year.

He's probably been various forms of injured for a long time now.

I'm not sure if he was so hurt that he was hurting the team more by playing handicapped than not playing at all, but it felt like that at times.

Im hyped they won & the fact that it was Nemec who came up big is awesome to see but, we need to be realistic. If we dont win tomorrow then this series is basically over. We aren't really "back in this thing" till its tied up 2-2 & the Devils have the luxury of playing Game 6 at home to make it harder for the Canes to win in 6.

One of the 2 goalies might be due for a stinker game tomorrow. The Devils offense still hasn't popped off yet so hopefully they are due for a 4 plus goal game. Either way if they can grind a win in a low scoring then that is perfectly fine.

Dumoulin has been solid, but he'll also be 34 by next season, and the Devils recent track record of signing 30+ year olds has been...questionable.

Dumoulin’s a year younger than Dillon.

We obviously don’t have the space for him but for me it’s just about how annoying the Dillon signing was.

You don't think him and Dillon have similar resume's?

Dillon got 4x3.

With the cap up now I don't think he comes in particularly cheap unless you give him term. On a 2 year deal I think the AAV is higher than you'd think
I would be very shocked if Dumoulin gets that much. I don't have his salary history up, but has he ever made that much in his career in a season? I don't think so, but I can't swear to it. I know he wasn't getting paid that on his current deal.

I don't see him getting a $1-$1.5 million per raise at age 34. I just don't.

And with Dillon, you know his physicality and hitting earned him some more dollars. Dumoulin just doesn't have that physical reputation.

Okay,. so about Nemec.

It would actually be nice if Nemec could be here next year, for cap reasons. He would be very cheap and if he can at least be the 6th defenseman then that would be great. I'm more than fine with trading him for something we can use right now, but I'm also fine with keeping him because he'll be cheap.

I think going really cheap on a #6 defenseman is a lot safer for us than going cheap on a backup goalie. If we could use those savings to bring back Allen or a goalie like him then that would be terrific.

After finally having a good goaltending year, Fitz would be stupid to go into next year with Markstrom/Daws. That reeks of Vanecek/Schmid 2.0 and Vanecek/Schmid wasn't even as easy to see coming as they were both good the year before. Daws only played 4 games to be good in, his AHL season sucked and he's not shown capable to be an NHL regular outside of 4 starts this year in the NHL.

So I'm much more comfortable with having a cheap defense contract like Nemec, which would hopefully allow us to better allocate money elsewhere. Like the backup goalie position and on forward.

Dumo got a 4.1x6 deal after his ELC

I will say one big difference between this year and the game 3 two years ago is that game was a lot easier for Carolina to just burn the tape and move on from it. Was a laugher "not their day" type of game.

This one was an emotionally devastating lose. A lot harder to put it behind you as a player.

We get on the fast tomorrow they might start to really doubt.
