Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

to go back to Quinn Hughes. Canucks really dropped the ball when they didn’t move up to draft Luke. They knew the devils were drafting him. If they were successful Jack would be walking there in a couple years.

I just learned something that kind of shocked me, but only because we never heard about it.

Remember when we hired Manny Legace last offseason to some kind of role in the goalie department? And I thought maybe it meant Rogalski was on the hot seat, as Legace was the Blue Jackets goalie coach not too long ago?

Apparently Scott Clemmensen is no longer employed with the Devils and has been working this entire last season as “goaltending scout” for the Rangers.

We never heard anything about this from the team, which is why it’s so weird. This news is almost a year old.

I wonder if Legace basically just replaced Clemmensen?

I think we’re riding out all 3 of them for another year and we’re bridging Luke. This teams real window is the year after next and the years thereafter.
Nico's deal worries me in regards to the window. I'm confident he's staying, but you never know...

I’m sure he wants to be paid fairly but the organization has been good to him. Now if it turns out he grew up with Maple Leafs pajamas there may be a problem

Really someone should tell Fitz I bet he don't know either 🤣

What happened to "you can always dump bad contracts"? Every team seems to be able to do it. Get it done Fitz.

You can’t always dump bad contracts with term.

If that were true then GMs would never buy out any player contracts, or bury them in the AHL, and that happens every year.

Palat has a NMC so Fitz can’t waive him or threaten to waive him to force him to accept a trade to a team not on his 10 team trade list.

Palat, Hamilton, Meier and Bratt all have NMC while Haula, Hischier, Noesen, Pesce, Dillon, Siegenthaler and Kovacevic all have various kinds of NTC but don’t have a NMC.

Also, it’s generally easier to dump defensemen and centers, wingers are tougher to move.

It’s only 1.48 for the last 2 years, due to his bonuses the dead cap space would be 3.53m in 25-26 and 2.53m after that.

I have zero interest in seeing Palat next season obviously but 2.47m is not much to work with when we replace him.
What if we were to wait a year to buy him out?

If Palat has to be here one more season than so be it, he must be on the 4th line. No more of this top 6 nonsense.
Thing is he scored goals when he was with Jack.

He's completely useless down the line up.

On the other hand he was a significant drag on Jack's on ice numbers.

There has to be some garbage team we can pawn him off on. Threaten Palat with AHL demotion. Teams around the league figure this stuff out, why can’t we

We can’t demote Palat because he has a No Movement Clause.

If teams could always figure it out than Nashville wouldn’t be paying Matt Duchene and Kyle Turris a combined 8.56m next season to not play on their team.

Even if the Devils have a couple of bad contracts (Meier and Palat) at least so far, the Devils are not in any type of cap trouble as a result. And down the road when it does have impact on the cap, any bad contracts can be traded off like the routine practice in the NHL today.

I would prefer not to get penalized for four years, dead cap space has a way of piling up.
It's only one extra year, with saving's in the previous 3. Looks like in total we save more cap buying him out this offseason.

I am wary of the draft capital it would take to trade him away.

I don’t understand what you mean by 1 extra year.

It’s two years for every season that’s bought out, so the cap penalty goes from 2 years to 4.

I'm not including Meier in the group right now.

We have some meh contracts where guys are overpaid, Dillon, Haula, Hamilton. But Palat is the contract that really needs to go.
