Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

all he had to say was “we will make sure we have enough cap space to offer him what he deserves” and then shut his mouth lol. he totally created this mess unnecessarily.

i always expected quinn to come here as a free agent. should we trade for him this off season? i don’t know… would our team be better long term if we wait 2 years and don’t give up assets and just money? do we expect to win in the next 2 seasons with him? i still think we should wait, or at least not give up more than one high end prospect (nemec or silayev) + a 1st.

kinda reminds me of the carmelo anthony trade from the nuggets to the knicks back in the day. was no secret he wanted to come to NY yet the GM could have waited and got him for just $$ in free agency yet they wanted him asap and traded away a ton of their depth and IMO became much worse off
Because the brilliant Dolan got an itchy trigger finger and forced the trade

That was different in that Melo was months away from FA and Quinn is still two years away though. That’s a long time to wait and hope nobody else gives him Kool-Aid before then

Rutherford pissed away any leverage he might have had away with this comment. Should a trade go down, he will get whatever Fitz offers him and no more.
Or a team trades for two years of control and hopes to change his mind, if not then they flip him to us. I can see a team that's close giving a better deal than anything we can/should offer for two years of Quinn before whatever happens happens.

I don't think a trade would happen until either the 2026 offseason, or in season next year if Vancouver is a disaster again. I think Rutherford was trying to deflect some blame onto Quinn for the disastrous season (his heart is elsewhere) and didn't understand the ramifications publicly.

With that said I expect NJ to explore it and if it's possible (seems unlikely) not mess around.

It's not the dumbest thing to put that Quinn rumor out there, I mean it's obvious.

Get everyone interested now and they can deal him over the summer while he's at his greatest value with two playoff runs left. Someone will offer up something stupid, hopefully not us.

Then he can come here.

Thanks for the replies! So I'm not trying to be Anti-Bring Quinn to NJ nor be homewrecker for a Hughes gathering lol... it's just I see the the flaws and deficiency we have on offense not changing even with Hughes on.

I get we're getting(in the scenario) best in the league in bring offense from the blue line but like someone said, hitting on the outlet passes, but passing to who? lol Glass? Cotter? Sprong? Bastian? etc.... heck even Mercer lol......

Then we'd have to re-up Luke before even Quinn I imagine and then what on the Forwards?

Running it back with Tatar 3.0? Noeson and Palat playing still? though Palat may be on final year by the time Quinn hits FA...

I know it seems like we're doing "great" from the blue line but our significant problem is the assembly on the front 12 out there.

Some fans here bashing Fitz for being too defensive and not attending to the C needs... can't say that if you want him to get Quinn....

maybe we can get Quinn and still fix the offense with forwards/centers... idk the $ to that point yet.

you can't even turn down talent like that i dont care where our other issues come from. get quinn trade away someone on d then to get some help up front. if the goal they share is winning i dont think quinn is going to break the bank on his next contract.

Quinn very well might be the best Dman in the league. He and Luke play the same role so adding him will limit Luke but not sure how you can say no to adding Quinn if it is possible.

I would just have Luke hold the puck behind the net for 60 minutes a game and take the “W” with the Jack, Quinn and Luke 3v3. They would never lose possession.

For shits and giggles, if all 3 Hughes bros did unite and all took a family matching discount (ala Parise and his boyfriend), what would that number be? 10million per?

It’s hard to see that far into the future. Maybe Quinn can agree to something but Jack can’t for at least another four years. Let’s see what NJ can get done with Luke this offseason. Hopefully he doesn’t try to jam NJ with a five year deal.

I’m hoping Fitz offers the matching Jack contract and then they all top out at whatever Quinn decides to take. I’m thinking Luke may want closer to 9 though.

Concerning that Luke's shoulder injury, which he's f***ed up a few times this year that I can recall, is NOT the one he already had surgery on. Feels like he should get bite the bullet when they're done with the playoffs and have it done. It's been a recurring thing and the Hughes brothers apparently have shoulders made of balsa wood and Elmers glue.

This team currently is like a worse version of the pre-cup Panthers. We need our own Zito who can build proper depth and re-tool the culture with a Tkatchuk-like trade.

Its unlikely to work out perfectly, but if Quinn does truly want to be here.. I dont think you can move anything of value for him

We arent winning before 2027; at least not by my estimation. Getting a Quinn for nothing but cash would be like a soft reset for the value Fitzgerald has mismanaged

Also I simply dont see us beating a package for two (or even one) full year of Quinn. Some contender will pay royally for the leagues best defenseman making only ~8

Most of the foundation pieces are here. We need more support around it. A Larkin type would also be great.

Also, Quinn coming would be huge.

I mean, they can surgically repair it, but why bother? It's going to be the same problem next year. Ellen gave her children the "injured by a slight gust of wind" genes.

If Luke would take $9 mil per long term I’d say ok if I’m the GM. Prices are going up and it’s not an insane number anymore

I get the assumption that we have the “foundation”…but at the same time…there’s something missing with this core. They don’t seem to have a strong competitive fire and emotion. We need more. Maybe acquiring Quinn fixes it, or like I said maybe someone who can be our version of M. Tkachuk. But something is clearly off with this core group that needs some kind of tweaking.

Re Quinn:

Fitz needs to follow the Art of War. Specifically, the part where you never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake. Rutherford made an all-time blunder and the stage is set for Quinn to come. Therefore, he owes us nothing, and Fitz would do well to make sure we part with nothing or as close to it.
